Alton was just here in St. Louis for a book signing. Anyone who gets the chance to see/meet him should take advantage of the opportunity. He is so funny, smart, quick-witted and kind in person. What you see on TV is what you get.
I was making small talk with him while he signed books and I mentioned that a book tour must be a "dog" of a job--being away from the family, putting on a happy face for thousands of strangers, risking hand cramps, etc. The look on his face was one of humored disbelief, as if there was nothing he would rather do than interact with his fans. Here's a guy who knows where his bread is buttered (pardon the food pun) and apparently doesn't let his professional yet approachable demeanor ever slip. Go see him!
crap crap crap crap - I'll be at the Monterey Bay Aquarium the weekend *after* that. Wah.
