Next Food Network Star - Episode 8

Okay, I'm all caught up with The Next Food Network Star and I have to say, after some thought, I'm happy with the final two. I think the people who deserve it are still there.

What did you think?

  1. So Debbie really WAS being kept around as the villain in order to keep ratings up.

Well, whatever. Neither Melissa nor Jeffery are stellar, but they're probably the best out of the contestants. I'd probably watch either of their shows, or at least try to.

  2. I guess Sea World needed Shamu back! Buh bye Shamu Debbie!

  3. DING DONG THE BITCH IS GONE!

  4. I bet the Melissa is the winner. She recently sold her home in Southlake. Loaded up the truck and moved to NY!

  5. Melissa keeps getting better. Thank goodness Debbie's cooking wasn't up to snuff or they would have given her another pass on her lying, deceitful personality. I couldn't believe Jeffery had such poor judgement in planning his menu & he didn't chose ingredients with a higher Wow factor. He dodged a bullet this week....they could have sent him home & he knew it. A show with either one would be OK with me. I think Jeffrey would fit the standard FN expectations more readily....as in being a no brainer for producers to put a show together but the show could lack substance & just be another FN mass produced bore. I think Melissa has more potential to be a true star with devoted followers but producers would have to work harder to put her show together. We shall see.

  6. Do we really need another Sandra lee? I don't! Debbie should have won the whole thing.

    ReplyDelete
  7. No, we don't need another Sandra Lee and Melissa has no resemblance to Sandra Lee. None whatsoever! Debbie is a bold faced liar, caught lying multiple times, and she never did a very good job of showing her CPOV. If FN wants to have a new show with a liar they should bring JAG back. He can cook rings around Debbie Lee. I'd love to see an true Asian show on FN but NOT one with Debbie Lee....yea, she's gone and I hope they don't bring her back in any form ever!

  8. Perfect Debbie wins and the home cook can replace the awful Sandra Lee. Debbie was good in the beginning, until she started thinking she was better then everyone...thank goodness she is gone!

    HI JACOB! COME HOME!

  9. Can Someone exlain to me how Debbie's people cam here 60 years ago, not cooking any sort of korean food?

For her people to have come here 60 years ago, that mean's her mother was either born in korea or in america, but either way I'm sure her mom grew up eating Korean food. But today debbie said she just met her grandmother recently, how does that happen? Her mother couldn't have been old enough to come here on her own and young enough to still have debbie.

Something in the back of my mind had a huge problem with her math and her lifestory.

Debbie said in episode 1, she doesn't speak korean and doesn't eat kimshi, but today she was speaking korean and cooking korean celebration food.

Am I alone in my suspicions?

  10. Melissa... yuck, yuck and yuck again. I would never watch a show with her on it. I find her disgusting. Who would USE such a tragedy as her mother's death to win a stupid cooking competition. I was never rooting for her but after tonight's episode, I can't stand her. I don't like people who would do or say anything to WIN! It's not an endearing quality.

    ReplyDelete
  11. So does that mean you don't like Debbie either?

    ReplyDelete
  12. Wow kfwb98/Debbie since you couldn't say it on the show you type it a blog. You had no class on the show and even less now. Please do what's right and let it go you were kicked off the show, nobody cares about your poor atttitude.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I think Debbie's instinct is to lie, then figure out a way to cover up her lies or try to charm her way out. I too am suspicious of her family time line. I wonder if FN did a background check on her....my bet would be that she wouldn't pass it.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Oh for sure Debbie was kept on to keep ratings high!

These are both good finalists. I still have my money on Jeffrey; I'm just thinking FN is wanting someone with the reputation of having experience as a chef.

But that by no means Melissa isn't deserving and certainly has a place in the FN. She's being smart about commenting on her potential branding.

    ReplyDelete
  15. No... melissa moved to Redmond- for her husband's job with Microsoft

    ReplyDelete
  16. I like Melissa, but feel that she would be just another cute, perky RR clone. I really like her, but feel that type is overdone on FN already.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Well my prediction came true. I bet FKB as road kill won't be the entree. Oh, well. I think that either will make a passable show. Who knows maybe it will be a great show. It was nice to see Emeril back on FN.

If Melissa wins, maybe she can take on the show that "Aunt Sandy" is trying to pull off. (anyone notice Sandra must have lost her hair stylist and started shopping at "Ross")

If Jeffrey wins can we start calling him Jeff. I really am looking forward to see the pilot shows. From the promos it looks like Alton will be taking Gordon Elliots role from last season.

In the beginning I thought it would be Jeffery, but I am happy to say that I will be watching this week and basing who I will pick on how they do this week. Melissa has that MILF look, just not my type of MILF.

My hopes for this week is that FN does not fuck up and give it away in advance, that neither is hiding homosexual tendencies, and that Kimchi can't make it to the finale, cause she is the guest of honor at a cannibal convention.

    ReplyDelete
  18. So when will Tuschelwipe be giving Debbie her own show ? Do you think they might wait the usual 4-6 weeks after the "competition" ends?

If Melissa "wins" she'll fit in niceley with the present FN stable of self taught untrained hosts.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Marguerite is an idiot.

Have you ever actually watched Sandra Lee? Melissa is not anything like her.

Not going to culinary school does NOT automatically make you a "Sandra Lee."

    ReplyDelete
  20. Glad Debbie is gone....for now.

Anyone else shocked that Jeffrey chose to make risotto? He even acknowledged it's a very, very time sensitive dish.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Goodbye, Doughy Bag Face!

    ReplyDelete
  22. I think Melissa should win. The chefs were really empressed with her food and she has a great personality. I know she has things to learn about being on TV, but so did the rest of the previous winners. I don't think she is anything like Sandra Lee.

    ReplyDelete
  23. One more thing. Why were the Neelys part of any culinary "elite" ?

Oh wait. I forgot. Anything Food Network tells us must be true. OK I get it now.

    ReplyDelete
  24. is kfwb98 really debbie?

    Brick chick hit the wall
    Mel's EZ POT mnemonic
    What's the next surprise?

    Pastry dough wins it
    Instant credibility
    Mommy Mayhem's gone

    Scallop demo rocks
    Jeffrey is Mr Lifestyle
    Get a line of pots?

    Soupy risotto

  26. Wow - passionate.
I am rooting for Melissa - I really don't care if she is a "trained chef" or not - guess what...neither am I. And I certainly garner more inspiration from "someone like me" since I will never have the opportunity to attend culinary school and be a "real" chef.

I think she is real.........and out of everyone, I would eat HER food. Jeffrey and his chili issues is too much a BF wannabe and well.....what can I say about Debbie that hasn't been said. Ethics issue for me. Can't stand liars. I just don't believe anything she says.

    Go Melissa!!!!!!!

  27. PREVIEWS

    Alton is fuming
    "Jeffrey, that's a tomato,
    not an onion, dude."

    Alton von Stroheim:
"I'm gonna cut you off there!"
    Teutonic tyrant?

  28. I really hope Melissa wins. I don't think I can handle watching Jeffrey on a show and be completely bored to tears.

    ReplyDelete
  29. John Besh, Alex Guarnaschelli , Tyler Florence, and... The Neely's?!? "One of these things is not like the other, one of these things just doesn't belong" comes to mind. Anyways, I am glad Tuchelson finally opened their eyes and gave Debbie what she deserved. Can't wait to see who wins!

  30. SUNSET GRILL REVISITED

Lets go down to the Food Network
We can watch the star wanna-be's go by
Watch the FN execs walk around and mumble
And stare out at the vanilla sky

There's Alton from the show called Good Eats
To him, its all the same
Calls all his Food Network peers inane

Down at the sunset grill (x4)

You see a lot more meanness on the network
Its the kind that Cuisinarts you up inside
Hard to come away with anything that feels
    Like a decent risotto
Hard to get home with any pride

These days a man makes a lamb chop
But, the starch is under cooked
There is no hiding on the plate

Down at the sunset grill (x4)

Respectable little junk food sponsors pay
They get more respectable every day
Dont worry girl, the Unwrapped re-runs aren't forever
And someday soon were gonna get in Guy's Car and get outta here

    Maybe well leave come springtime
    Meanwhile, have another beer
What would we do without all these recipes with bacon
    Anyway?

Besides, there's always the Travel Channel, and Bourdain is there

Down at the sunset grill (x4)

  31. The Neely's were there cause the table lacked a certain "complexion"! Why else would they be there?

Debbie was a sneaky lying sack of crap. I heard shes Asian!!! What card was she trying to play all along?

Jeffery is boring and predictable, his food is also one dimensional.

Melissa will and deserves to win! She makes interesting food and has a decent enough personality. The rest will come with time and experience.

    Go Melissa, you roxor!

    ReplyDelete
  32. ...Melissa stunned the table with her dishes, aside from 'some' of the chicken being dry...she ownd!!

Her desert shows she can think outside any box she may have been perceived to be in, Jeffery also knows shes a few steps above him with variety.

It's Melissa, and she earned it. They laughed and rolled their eyes at her in the beginning and now that shes acclimated...nuff said!

Note: I also believe that Jamika tried to sabotage Melissa by purposefully over-salting her first dish on her!!! Notice how buddy-buddy Jamika and Debbie are, Jamikia went so far as to tell Debbie "you got beat them girl" (paraphrasing)

So don't let the door hit your fatty behinds too hard "ladies"!

buh bye to the liar and the angry black woman!

    ReplyDelete
  33. I thought the same thing about the over salted orzo Jamika worked on that Melissa had to deal with. But Melissa was savvy enough to be on the watch for crap like that. I'm glad she didn't let possible sabotage derail her. When I saw that Jamika was Melissa's sous chef I was afraid that Melissa was being set up. Like in the live demo challenge....Debbie had it easy & the local host ruined Melissa's dish. Yea Melissa! I loved Jeffrey's comment about Melissa having a black belt underneath her mommy apron. FN should give them both a show & cancel one of the lousy shows they already have.

    ReplyDelete
  34. BTW, Melissa moved to Kirkland, Washington, not NYC!

    ReplyDelete
  35. "Note: I also believe that Jamika tried to sabotage Melissa by purposefully over-salting her first dish on her!!! Notice how buddy-buddy Jamika and Debbie are, Jamikia went so far as to tell Debbie "you got beat them girl" (paraphrasing)"

Jamika and Debbie are now BFFs for real. They are hanging out together, hosting watch parties for the show.

Jamika definitely over-salted on purpose. She never would have done that with her food.

    Fatties must stick together.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Considering it usually only takes about a week (maybe 2 at the most, if you're a newbie) to shoot 6 episodes, I still think Melissa could live anywhere and still find time to make it to NYC to shoot the show, if she wins.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Melissa will be replacing Robin Miller, not Aunt Sandy. I say don't give either Melissa or Jeff a show, and extend Anne Burrell's "Secrets of a Restaurant Chef" to a full hour. She is just fantastic. She moves smoothly in the kitchen, is entertaining, and her dishes are always appealing.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I believe that Melissa was setup in the "live demo challenge" as well! Melissa was the only one that received PERSONAL ATTACKS was the eh "host"!

The other 3 had it relatively easy but for some reason they had the host be mean and destructive to Melissa!! I thought that was totally unfair that it was directed at Melissa on a personal level!

Pure BS if you ask me, they all should have had the SAME disruptions!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yep, just a guess here, but I have a feeling that Melissa could see the difference in the level of obstacles thrown at her after the live demo & she resolved to dig in her heels in & work harder & smarter. I'll bet she was on her guard when she got Jamika as her sous chef.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm sure all of you who like to call Debbie and Jamika "fatties" have perfectly sculpted bodies. Christ.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I agree with water sign. It's really sad that most people hated Debbie just because she's fat.

    ReplyDelete
  42. "I'm sure all of you who like to call Debbie and Jamika "fatties" have perfectly sculpted bodies. Christ."

We're not being paraded around on tv (sculpted bodies or not) thus are NOT open to the same level of scrutiny as fatties - angry Jamika and lying Debbie! Make sense?

Wanna be on TV be prepared to be critiqued! Else stay in school and get an anonymous job! Christ. (such whining)

Besides I LOVE calling fatties on tv fat! How dare you try to break my stride! Anyway...Did any of you actually MISS Jamika in that blue dress? I mean gawd, her behind was almost pointing skyward, it was like she was wearing one of those horse costumes and there was another person under that dress behind her.

    ReplyDelete
  43. "I agree with water sign. It's really sad that most people hated Debbie just because she's fat."

Actually I disliked Debbie because she is a liar and a cheap low-brow manipulator!

But nice attempt to divert the discussion with cheap low-brow feel-good-isums! ;)

However, shes finished now and can go back into obscurity! She can ply her lying ways back in the catering garage she crawled out from! Her AND her stinking Kimchi and the fact she's Asian, something she didnt fail to point out to us twice per show!

    *Yawn* (Debbie)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I don't want to see overweight fat cooks. We have become a nation of fat folks. I have a condition that makes it damn near impossible to eat food. I want every bite I take to taste good since I can only have few bites at a time. Every time I go into the supermarket, I have to watch what I buy to prevent me from getting a reduced fat item. I need every calorie I can get down. I just love looking at food, but I don't want to see heaping mounds of food that fills a plate give me a beautiful presentation of a tasty treat. I want to see a nice presentation of a "reasonable" portion.

If you are overwight you should do something about it. Usually this involves something complicated, like not putting the food in your mouth. Think of that 64 ounces of diet soda filling your stomach keeping it big so you can stuff gobs and gobs of "lite" food into your overweight body and then you flop down on the couch and watch some fat chick from Glendale AZ on "American Idol" or fat Mikey on "American Chopper".

Jacob makes some solid points as to why Melissa should win. I did watch episodes of Amy Finley, just didn't get all that excited about it. I quit taping RR cause her 30 minute meals are pretty much all the same. Like I said I am holding my decision to Sunday night and can live with either winning a fair contest. Follow that with another episode of "True Blood"

Other TV: TLC Who watched Cake Boss, Monday? Buddy frosted a cake blindfolded, including topping it with a rose, now that was pretty cool.

Tomorrow is the big night over on Bravo the Finale of "Top Chef Masters" Michael C is the FN chef that made the cut along with Oprah's boy Art.

    ReplyDelete
  45. No one hated Debbie because she was fat. They just brought it up because she's a back-stabbing liar.

    ReplyDelete
  46. The 2 best cooking shows I've seen featured Mario Batali and Lydia Bastianich. I would guess they each have a BMI >30.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I saw Cake Boss. Buddy Valastro knows what he is doing. Same for most of the other employees at Carlo's Bakery.

Real pros. Unlike some other cake shows. I'd bet Buddy even has realistic pricing for his works of art.

Go Buddy. Offer Goldman a Red velvet Throwdown. You'd smoke him in a second.

    ReplyDelete
  48. People who think we're insulting "Shamu" Lee solely because of her weight need to shut their mouths.

NOBODY is attacking Debbie because she's very overweight. It's a simple fact that when you display a lack of moral fiber, integrity and honesty, you show the world that you're an ugly person on the inside.

When that happens, people will tend to criticize you and point out your other faults as well....the fact that she happens to be obese by medical definition is just her most visible fault. If she was skinny to the point of her cheekbones jutting out of her face, people would have attacked that physical attribute instead.

Michael is a fat guy as well. However, NOBODY attacked him for his weight. Do you know why? Because he showed integrity, a working moral compass and honesty.

You can criticize Michael for freezing up too much or being too flamboyant at times, but nobody will ATTACK him for any of his physical traits because from what we've seen, he's not an ugly, vindictive vampire on the inside.

    ReplyDelete
  49. I loooove Lydia! And she has some big tig ole' bitties!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Great points Jay! In watching Debbie's exit video, it sounds like she's proud of being a liar. She says she wouldn't change a thing, she's glad she showed the judges who she really is. That's sad. Not a word about being caught lying.....to her that's just another part of her personality. I hope she crawls back into the hole she slithered out of soon!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Late in adding my comments, but I was really put off by Melissa sharing her mother's suicide to help her win a challenge...it was utterly repulsive - there was a strange gleam in her eye and a little excitement about sharing this with the panel...it was gross as far as I am concerned...what does it have to do with a cooking show I ask you? That being said, thank God and Greyhound Debbie is gone...

    ReplyDelete
  52. okay anyone who says that they call debbie shamu b/c she's an ugly person on the inside is full of it. even if she wasn't this seasons 'villain' and was the most honest person to exist, you would still make fun of her for being fat b/c it makes you feel better about yourself. i swear this blog is full of 6 yr olds.

and honestly i think the reason people never really gave michael a hard time about being overweight is b/c he's a man. that's just what i think.

debbies show was to be called 'seoul to soul' not 'i'm the most in shape person on food network'

i know the point of this blog is to share your thoughts about all things food network, but don't blame your calling debbie shamu on the fact that she's dishonest. its a reason you give yourself to not feel like a totally evil person for being so mean.

and another thing... its really annoying when you tell people that you don't even know what they NEED to be doing. such as losing weight. its none of your damn business. at least that's what i'd be thinking if i were in debbies position..

annnyyywhooooo... the reason i even came on was b/c i watched the most recent episode and it kinda bothered me when susie was explaining what julie and julia was about during the first part of judging. she said yada yada yada.. and something about making food your whole life. isn't that the opposite of most food network shows. it seems to me the whole point is to make it easy and to get it on the table quickly.. not make it your whole life. just something i noticed that didn't make alot of sense.

annnnd i will discontinue my rambling.. now.

    ReplyDelete
  53. @Rachel

When you elect to have yourself spotlighted in the media you open yourself up to critiques otherwise considered 'bad form' in society. I'm sure Debbie would have gladly accepted the BENEFITS of being on TV...but NOW that shes a LOSER she will accept the ridicule!!

Debbie would have done much better if she had made all her appearances, and done all her cooking from atop a treadmill that she was constantly running on! That would have defiantly shut everyone up, she would have been 'trying' NOT to be a FATTY!

But thats not the case, so game on!

FN missed a HUGE marketing opportunity by passing on Debbie. They could have sold big ass FEEDBAGS with Debbie's face plastered on them!!! Awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  54. As an American-born Korean, I was rooting for Debbie for the first episode, and even gave her a pass for the lie she told. When they did initial cast member intros, I felt a certain level of pride and happiness...it isn't very often you see Koreans on the FN.

Also, Rachel, you say it's "annoying" when strangers tell each other what they "NEED to be doing"....Well, it's equally (if not more) annoying when I see a stranger telling me what I am really thinking, and how my thought process works. I think it's ridiculous for a stranger to be telling me what I am thinking; especially when they are dead wrong.

Like I said...once you give people a reason to dislike you, they will pick a part every single flaw you have.

I have never, in my entire life, heard anyone call Ina or Lidia "fat" (here, there or anywhere else. NEVER)...do you know why? Because these are two very respectable and honest women.

As far as the show goes, I see Melissa winning for the same reasons Jacob stated, though Michael winning to take the "gourmet" style daytime show isn't out of the question either. I think with his hits and misses, he did put out some sophisticated plates.

Michael or even Jamika would do well on a "Will Work For Food" type show...I honestly think if FN decided to do a series like DD&D where they send Mike to different hotspots and nightclubs to taste the food, it would go over really well.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Rachel:

Jamika is obese and I don't see any fat jokes about her, so obviously people aren't targeting women in general.

Also, you sort of come off like a bitter overweight person. People say Debbie needs to lose weight because it's a FACT, not an opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hi all,
I knew Melissa was going to win. Bobby had nothing good to say about Debbie and was intimidated by Jeffery. In the Miami challenge Jemeka was only given celery root while Debbie had all her spices taken and given 3 ingredients to use. Bobby was all over her for forgetting the capers. He was always ready to find fault with her. Did anyone notice that in Melissa's demo she didn't use any seasoning on the chicken or in the flour? Bobby would have been all over if that had been Debbie. As for Jeffery - I've been team Jeffrey since Debbie was gone. I've been looking for harissa since his demo aired. I think Debbie and Jeffrey's concepts were unique and fresh. Melissa has that deer in the headlights look to her like Amy Finley. And where's she? Food Network got it wrong this time. Maybe next year! Melissa is another Robin Miller or Sarah Moulton - they may cook, but not passionate.

    ReplyDelete
  57. A show with possibly just one can be OK with me. I think Jeffrey would suit the basic FN expectations additional readily....
