I need to watch the new episodes of Cooking for Real and Ace of Cakes that I missed (sorry about not posting about last night's FIFTH season premiere!), plus there's a new ep of Simply Delicioso this Saturday I'd like to check out, and Next Food Network Star on Sunday.
Also, I've still only seen the first episode, "Honey," of How'd That Get On My Plate?
How was the "Milk" episode this past Monday?
So far, I think Sunny is great in the series. I loved seeing her in the beekeeper gear.
Still, I wish that the honey episode had focused a bit more on what goes on at the bee farm instead of trying to fit in segments on multiple products (barbeque sauce, nuts, AND cream soda). Maybe showing how the raw material makes its way into one finished product would allow the show to devote a bit more time to the ingredient's journey.
Featuring all those products gave the show, to me, too much of a Marc Summers Unwrapped feel... which shouldn't be all that surprising since the same production company that does Unwrapped, High Noon, is doing HTGOMP?.
I like Unwrapped, don't get me wrong, but I think Sunny's show has the opportunity to go into a new direction. It still has time.
Agree on focusing on one food in the long run, that was the genius of Follow that Food.

The milk episode was kind of disgusting for me. I read a book not long ago that talked about a lot of horrible things that go on when milking cows and it completely turned me off for a while.
ReplyDeleteThe episode didn't show these things, of course, but I just couldn't seem to get the images out of my head.
i haven't watched it yet, but it seems a lot to me like unwrapped except she actually goes to the places
ReplyDeleteThe problem with making a mashup show of "Good Eats" and "Dirty Jobs" is that it leads you to end up truly appreciating ALTON BROWN and MIKE ROWE's abilities as hosts.

I haven't watched the Milk episode, but did see Honey. It was good, but not so much that I would go out of my way to watch/record it.
ReplyDeleteI really like Sunny and I REALLY want to like this show, but I can't see the difference between HTGOMP and Unwrapped. Well the one big difference being that Sunny's tv presence is better than Marc Summers. Every time I see him I expect him to ask if I am ready for "Double Dare".

I hate, hate, HATE Tyra Banks. And Sunny, to me, comes across as a THIRD RATE Tyra Banks.
Maybe that jackass Gordon Elliot needs to be airlifted in to fix things? He seems to have a way of distinguishing things.
ReplyDeleteI hate Sunny Anderson, and her show is a blatant (and inferior, if possible) copy of Unwrapped -- down to her bizarre efforts to emulate Mark Whatshisname's inflection.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, How'd That Get On My Plate? is one of the most unintentionally hilarious FN titles ever.
I've seen both Milk and Honey episodes and I can't really tell the difference between that show and Unwrapped. I mean, HTGOMP focuses on just one main ingredient in each food product to tie together the show, but Unwrapped sorta does that too.
ReplyDeleteThe only big difference is that Sunny actually visits 1-2 of the production locations, with the other ones simply being voiced over, a la Mark Summers. She's likable, but the show needs a more differentiated hook.
I like Sunny. The concept of the show is just another FN recycled idea. God forbid they try to come up with an original idea. However, lets all give Sunny a break. The show could be hosted by Bobby Rivers. Remember him?

ReplyDeleteI will say that i watched part of the Milk ep. and did watch the full Honey ep. and in both cases thought it was pretty good.
The milk show was essentially an ad for the Big Dairy industry, where all dairy cattle lead a beautiful life on the plains and raw, unpasteurized, non-homogenized milk is poison.
ReplyDeleteThis show does seem to be a recycled Unwrapped. Disappointing. Sunny has a lot of personality, etc. I think her talents are being wasted here.

ReplyDeleteI watched both the honey and milk episodes and found the info presented far too shallow to be interesting. It's just basic facts for the most part. Really, it's Follow That Food done not nearly as well. Sonny is OK but not enough so to make up for the lack of content.

ReplyDeleteJust saw the egg episode. I'm really not a nature or organic food activist, but I really could not believe how she fails to hint to any notion that this is not how things are supposed to be. She kept referring to the place where the chickens live as a farm, but video of the place made it clear that it was simply a factory. Then, whenever she'd say hens, they'd cut to stock footage of some birds outdoors--definitely not the same birds she was looking at.
