Ina Shows Off Her New Barn

Ina Garten wanted a house, so she built a barn. Confusing? Well, not really. For years, Ina used her own home to film her TV show, develop recipes for her books, and do magazine photo shoots. That requires a lot of people in your house all the time.

After visiting East Hampton back in September and seeing the kind of production that goes on just while filming Barefoot Contessa, I definitely understand why Ina would want a little peace and quiet.

Just look at everything in her garage!

In addition to the three ovens, two refrigerators, and multiple gas burners that Ina has in her barn's kitchen, the garage is where culinary assistants work to prep multiple version of the same dish all day long.

They have another 4-5 refrigerators, 3-4 more ovens, and every pot and pan imaginable in there!

You can tell Ina is thrilled to have the barn completed. House Beautiful got a special tour of the place.

As you can see, the barn is just across the yard from Ina's home. When having parties, guests sit on the stone wall and roast marshmallows in the big iron fire bowl.

I'm not sure how high the ceiling is, but it's impressively high. That's why the newer shows actually have a bit more of an echo to them. I love the exposed beams, too.

We didn't go into the barn's bedroom while I was there (it serves as Ina's hair & makeup / sanctuary while taping), but from the look of it it seems like a great place to spend the night. Just look at the tub that looks out into the garden!

Not to be outdone, Food Network's Bruice Seidel took a tour of the barn, which you can catch on the latest episode of The FN Dish [link updated, should work now]. Ina is so sweet in it. Check it out!

  1. Ina has amazing taste. I think she is beautiful inside and out! Her taste is way better than Giada's. Giada would never pull something like this...or don't have enough money to pull something like this.

  3. Ina is classy in every sense. Comparing her to Giada is not fair to Ina.

I applaud Ina for keeping things low key and not trying to do what Giada de Laurentis is trying to do.

  4. Ina is 180 degrees low-key compared to Paula Deen !

  7. Calling that a barn is so, so wrong. It's more a cooking-filming-sactuary! I want to move in!

  10. Wow, what a beautiful BARN. Her barn is nicer than my house...ouch. She is first class all the way.

  11. The interior of the "barn" is stunning. It did surprise me that with all the money spent the culinary assistants are working on folding tables sitting up on wooden crates...

  12. Great photos of the garage -- they sure didn't include those in the House Beautiful spread. :-)

  13. OK, Jacob, you owe me $128.42. As soon as I saw your post I just HAD to run right over to Borders to pick up the latest issue of HB to check out our girl Ina. Then I just HAD to pick up the new Food Network mag, and then, for some reason, I felt compelled to buy everything they had on Truman Capote. Thanks for your blog! You just ROCK!

I thought that too, but I was told that East Hampton wouldn't allow her to set up anything very permanent for her assistants, as having two, separate kitchens can't be in a single-family home. East Hampton has pretty strict laws about keeping its areas relatively undeveloped.

Also, while it is a big setup, Ina only shoots twice a year... usually just for four weeks at a time. So I'm sure she likes getting back her garage when the crew isn't there the other part of the year.

  23. The thing about Ina is that she allows us to remind ourselves that there IS more to life than the up-coming election.
