Another Reason to Love Mary Alice

This brings a tear to my eye!

Mary Alice Yeskey, from Food Network's Ace of Cakes, was recently able to help a 17-year-old girl diagnosed with Leukemia check off an item on her "bucket list": meet someone who works at Charm City Cakes. And it's pretty amazing how it happened!

Liz Evett, a Washington state high school senior, was diagnosed with Leukemia three years ago. After she stopped responding to chemotherapy in June, doctors told her she had weeks to months to live.

Inspired by the 2007 movie The Bucket List, Liz set out to create her own list of things she hoped to do before she dies. Meeting someone from Charm City Cakes was on that list.

WELL--Mary Alice was in Seattle for a wedding and just happened to check her email, only to find an article mentioning Charm City Cakes in the local paper. She checked it out, read about Liz and her story, and "proceeded to freak out."

From the Tri-City Herald:
"I started to shake. I was just picking my jaw up off the floor," said Yeskey.

"I just couldn't believe that I read that when I was in Seattle," she added. "(I thought) 'There's a reason why I'm here right now.' "

Not only was Yeskey in the state, but she also had already planned to drive through the Tri-Cities to visit her family's old house about a mile south of Kennewick General Hospital. She's on a road trip to Austin, Texas.

"The universes imploded on another and everything aligned," Yeskey said. "I'm just super-excited to be here and couldn't believe the providence of all these things happening."

The Food Network, one of Liz's favorite channels, was playing in the background Monday afternoon while Liz and Yeskey got to know one another. They talked about their favorite Food Network shows and Duff Goldman, the bakery's owner.

Liz tried to explain how exciting it was to meet Yeskey, and Yeskey responded, "You've got nothing on my excitement, lady."

What a great right place/right time story! Mary Alice: you are awesome!

If it wasn't for Ace of Cakes and the truly interesting AND likeable folks on there, I'd all but give up on the FN at this point. Mary Alice rocks.

Mary Alice rocks the universe! It's so refreshing to see that there truly are (for lack of a better word) TV celebs who are still willing to keep it real and do some good for others!

Good story. Good to know the folks at CCC still seem to be fairly normal in the wake of their popularity.

I hope it stays that way.

Liz Evett's mom here. You are all awesome and we so appreciate the prayers -- lots of miracles in the last three years but this one was one of the most shocking! Mary Alice truly does rock -- we really had a great time and are honored to have met her. Divine providence I say! What a way to touch people's lives, huh?

I can't believe Mary Alice was here in Seattle and I came >>>that<<< close to her awesomeness and missed it.

She seems like such a sincere sweetheart and this sounds totally like something she would go out of her way to do. [not missing me, seeing Liz].
