Tyler Florence To Release Line of Organic Baby Food
I don't remember anything wrong with Gerber.
Although I don't remember much from those days.
ANYhow, Tyler Florence will be releasing his own line of organic baby food, set to hit store shelves early next year.
"Florence’s baby food line eliminates glass jars and incorporates some wonderful age-appropriate, allergy-tested flavors that aren’t found in any other baby foods. In addition to selections such as roasted apples and roasted bananas, other options include gourmet stage 1 and 2 varieties — such as pasta with lentil bolognese, peach rice pudding, sweet baby carrots, and apples and mango."
I don't have kids, so parents: is this something you'd be interested in serving your baby, or would have served your baby?

I'm back in DC now. Hope the holidays were fun-filled for everyone.

No, I like to make my own!
I'm sure that it is a good product , but in these difficult economic times it might be another " baby gourmet " item ..... Meaning very expensive !
I think the key word to this is organic, and the list suggest that it is not just steamed food, but also roasted which would make it more like a home meal and today some parents are always in a rush, it should fill a need to give the child a type of home cooked organic food. It might do alright if not to pricey.
Oh brother! The generation that is so me centered is going to raise a bunch of food snobs.
I just hope they can afford it. Mommy might have to cut back on her shoe purchases to shell out for fancy-schmancy kid gruel. Just remember, you can't put the Genie back in the bottle once it's out.
There's a difference between a food snob and someone who enjoys and knows food. I would buy this. What's wrong with baby food that tastes better? Also, if we want to consider this depressing fact or not, babies aren't the only ones eating baby food -- many older people who have trouble chewing and swallowing (because of various physical reasons) eat baby food, and I suppose they would like something a little more flavorful than boiled, mashed carrots and the like.
I'm not sure this is the right time, economically, to launch this line.
From what I remember from my nephew, who is now four years old, Gerber baby food can be bought in (recyclable!) plastic containers that have lids for saving extra. My nephew seemed to like the Gerber baby food, especially the sweet potatoes, but everybody is jizzing in their pants about "organic" food these days, so it seems natural that it would extend into baby food. I'm sure there's already organic baby food to be found though. As for me, I'd just buy Gerber.
any person truly stupid enough to actually bring a brand new baby into this ever increasing fucked up world has way more to worry about for their kid than what kind of baby food it eats.....perhaps they should spend that money for someone to teach their kids spanish when they start learning to speak since obama is going to grant amnesty to the 20 millions illegals ruining our country...... he pretty much said we all need to teach the kids how to speak Illegalese anyway.... OLE!
Where the frak did that come from? Baby food... racist rant... on a Food Network-related web site. It all makes perfect sense.
I'd probably buy it but then again, Tyler Florence kind of bugs me. He and his wife just opened a new store, near where I live and everything in it is VERY expensive.
I remember the old days when I made my baby food. Cook fresh veggies, put them in a blender and freeze them in ice cube trays. My kids loved it and completely guilt free. However, there ARE times when everyone needs pre-made baby food. Maybe it's great stuff. Good luck Tyler.
Tyler is great. I wish him the best of luck with his adventure
Food for elite babies ...
This I have to see. Just about anything today is being relabelled organic.
People a such suckers these days. I shudder to think at how much this stuff will cost.
A professional needs to help Tyler with his business plan(s). He is all over the place. A store?? I thought that was stupid; he should be moving and shaking--he's a chef who should be cooking, not standing at a cash register. Why not a restaurant? Baby food? Eh. He needs a clear vision and plan. Store? Baby Food? Dishes at Miskasa? So random. TYLER: open a restaurant back on the east coast and go from there. You are losing your perspective and edge in CA. Luv ya!
Sounds like a well diversified business portfolio for a chef.
father of three... organic baby food
tired of mass kitchen shops.... opened his own
passionate about wine.... launching his brand in the spring
Loves California organic food.... Moves To SF to open his first restaurant. I think I've heard some time '09.
Author of 5 cookbooks....
On Television for over a decade.
Cut him some slack.
No one out side the F&B industry understands that there is very little money to be made in restaurants. 5%-7%, maybe 10% if your lucky and really pumping it. So let do the math....
$4.7 million in sales (hypothetically)
after all expenses, labor, food, rent, a chef and his partners clear 10% profit for the year, and let's say that there are 4 partners and they all get 25%. (hypothetically)
$470,000.00/4 = $117,500.00
and let's say that our boy is in the 30% tax bracket.
$35,250-$117,500.00= $82,075.00
and that's working 6 to 7 days a week 12-14 hours a day.
mortgage, three kids to put in college, Yada, Yada
Come on!!!!
He's a smart guy and someone who's been around the block. He's not going to put out crap and expect everyone to just lap it up like Rachel or Wolfgang. If any of you have been to his shop, he's got a serious eye for detail. Yelp gives it 4 stars(http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-tyler-florence-shop-mill-valley). O.k. I don't get the applebee's thing, but I have heard that he got north of $2.5 million for that gig. A lot of very talented chefs in major cities live pay check to pay check, for what?, for who?
You, thats who. So next holiday you can have a decent recipe to impress your family or a great restaurant to go to the next time you don't feel like cooking.
Chefs are the hardest working people and the first in line to take one on the chin.
I'm looking forward to his baby food, I have a toddler and one on the way. I'm sure it will be light years above the quality that other companies slop out.
As a chef, Tyler my man, you are above the fold.
and P.S. if you do applebee's again, next time, buy the company.
Shades of the Baby Boom movie with Diane Keaton and Sam Shepard??
anon at 4:52 PM
sheesh!!
take a valium will ya??
If he's so smart he needs to pay attention to the market and economy ...
His wife will catch him cheating on her and take her fair share. This boy is a wolf in sheep's clothing.
Oh REALLY ?
Tell,tell,tell us !
Nothing wrong with making a little money but you have to protect the brand. There is Tyler the guy and then there is Tyler Inc which is potentially worth millions. You can't do everything with no rhyme or reason or people will not respect you (at least not for long). I agree he should have some sort of a flagship restaurant back east where he stays innovative and cutting edge, and ALSO does the big money endorsements on the side. Jeez he is only 36 or 37, he is way too young to cash out now. he needs to stay relevant a little while longer so that his brand will have some longevity.
Wolf? Heh heh. Well I can tell you I was at a book signing where there were some real knockouts falling all over themselves for him, making real asses of themselves, really, and I was so impressed with how he was so nice to all of us but in only the most professional way. He was just SO professional and nice. I told him how impressed I was with him-- someone my age who was already so sucessful, and he really seemed touched by that. I congratulated him on his success and he accepted my good wishes with absolute sincere appreciation. He is a NICE guy. And, oh yeah ... Tyler, CALL ME ;)
A leopard never changes his spots. Figure it out Ms. Successful. If you can. You don't seem too bright after reading that last post.
Ew. This thread is turning gross. I for one am not interested in hearing any more about wolves leopards or spots. How stupid. Luv ya Tyler, good luck with everything.
If Tyler can keep the price of the food down it may do well if they have a good business plan. People are much more aware of feeding their babies healthy foods than themselves--thank god. Each serving of baby food is a larger portion of the total for them than it is for adults.
People, let's remember Tyler has ADHD so him jumping from business venture to business venture is not really a surprise. And if it works for him, who cares!?!?!
I have been buying Tyler's baby food at HEB in Austin, TX. It is priced at $0.99 and absolutely delicious. My son won't eat anything else now, yes, the genie is out of the bottle.
