Ina Makes a Valentine's Day Meal on TODAY
Ina Garten hit up NBC's studio 1A this morning, better known as the location of the TODAY show, to promote her recent book Back to Basics and cook up a Valentine's Day inspired meal. I think this makes it appearance #3 for Ina G. with this book. Such a media darling!
As we've discussed on here before, cooking segments on TV shows are usually obnoxious, rushed, and lacking of any useful information. And even though I think I've already seen all of these recipes (either on other segments or in the book), I still like watching. I think Ina does a very good job at explaining things quickly without leaving out any important info for the people who don't really cook. AND we even get a Meredith/Ina kiss! How appropriate!
And just in case anyone wants to make me the Coeur a la creme for V-Day, here's the recipe:
Coeur a la creme with raspberries
Ina Garten
This amazing dessert was inspired by my friend Anna Pump in her Loaves and Fishes Cookbook. This is really easy to make and can be prepared days before a party. Believe me, your friends will go crazy.
INGREDIENTS
• 12 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
• 1 1⁄4 cups confectioners’ sugar
• 2 1⁄2 cups cold heavy cream
• 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
• 1⁄4 teaspoon grated lemon zest
• Seeds scraped from 1 vanilla bean
• Raspberry sauce
• 1 pint fresh raspberries
DIRECTIONS
Place the cream cheese and confectioners’ sugar in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment and beat on high speed for 2 minutes. Scrape down the beater and bowl with a rubber spatula and change the beater for the whisk attachment. With the mixer on low speed, add the heavy cream, vanilla, lemon zest, and vanilla seeds and beat on high speed until the mixture is very thick, like whipped cream.
Line a heart-shaped mold with cheesecloth so the ends drape over the sides and place it on a plate, making sure that there is space between the bottom of the mold and the plate for the liquid to drain. Pour the cream mixture into the cheesecloth, fold the ends over the top, and refrigerate overnight.
To serve, discard the liquid, unmold the cream onto a plate, and drizzle raspberry sauce around the base. Serve with raspberries and extra sauce.

Saw the segment this morning. Ina, as usual, was a class act. Meredith totally enjoyed herself. As usual, it was rushed. But Ina breezed through and ended the segment with her signature laugh. Love her.
I'll make you a cream heart and Fedex it to you overnight.
And what is with Ina making all these appearances plugging her cookbooks. Maybe Jeffrey is taking a beating in these economic times and Ina is picking up the slack.
Just curious.
I don't think I can trust your creamy heart. No offense, though, Alec:-) And, yeah, I'm not really sure about their economic situation. Maybe the extra appearances mean something... maybe not. Was Jeffrey investing with Bernie Madoff?
I'm sorry but that fish recipe gets under my skin. I'm sure it tastes fab but the picture of it reminds me of Freddy Kruger's boiling skin like bubbling up BLECH! Roasted vegetables are great though esp fennel with parmasean. Yay Ina!
Wasn't Jeffrey real tight with all the savvy investors at Lehman Bros ? He was on the board wasn't he ?
I would not be surprised to see the Gartens having to cut back. Maybe Ina can only buy fresh flowers a few times a month .Might need to start shopping at Costco.
Put the Parisien apt up for sale.
Buy cheaper vanilla. Sell the Beemer, buy a Yaris.
As for that fish recipe, jeez want some fish with your serving of sauce ? That was total sauce suffocation.
I'm not sure what is so shocking about doing book promotions. What she's doing is fairly common for authors. She probably wasn't quite famous enough at the time of her first couple of books to get this many bookings, but now all the shows would want her doing promos. She does seem fairly private though, so maybe it is a bit of a surprise. Oh well, I'm happy to see her as much as possible!
Ina is the epitome of class and style. All the others are just wanna be fools.
I agree with you Chris M. Plus with all those over-exposed media whores on FN they didn't notice the class act Ina.
Yum! I might make this whole menu on Valentine's Day! It sounds good.
You can buy molds like what Ina uses here:

(I've never bought from this site, I just googled "Coeur a la creme molds" and this is what came up.)
How wonderful was this past weekend's episode, celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary. It had me all vaklempt. And Ina was feisty at the end, saying "if the tent's a rockin', don't come a knockin'!" LOL! LOVED IT. 5 stars
Ina Garten is the only thing keeping the FoodNetwork afloat. I love her to death and would just die to meet her. As all the other comments indicated, she was her usual classy, sophisticated, yet witty an charming self on the Today show.
Every recipe of her's has been a roaring success, and I just can't say enough about her!
Oh, and her gay friends on her show!? One word: fabulous!
She always does an amazing job! She breezed through that without the slightest stumble! And it was calm even though these types of recordings are so rushed! I am in love with this classy smart woman! I wish I could have her for dinner!!
