Bye Bye Teddy Folkman
So Teddy Folkman was kicked off last night on episode 4 of The Next Food Network Star. While I think Katie and her increasingly frightening bug eyes (I wouldn't normally suggest this, but please squint a bit) should have gotten the boot first, Teddy had it coming.
His food was good, but when it came to presentation he was just, let's go to the judges for this description, "so fake and nervous" (Susie Fogelson) and "so awkward" (Bobby Flay).
In the judges' deliberation video online, Bobby Flay even compares Teddy to a late night infomercial pitchman.
Could they possibly be referring to the late, great BILLY MAYS?
Teddy's on-camera delivery may have had a similar, loud style, but he could have definitely taken some lessons from Mr. Mays. Teddy's sentences were rapid and awkward and he spoke like a hyper salesman. That kind of delivery definitely doesn't work for food TV. On the other hand, when you watch the now-infamous Billy Mays commercials (KABOOM! OxiClean! Mighty Putty!) he still comes off pretty natural. You almost expect Billy would act exactly like that in person.
Billy was also always 100% sure of himself--something Teddy rarely seemed to be, always second-guessing his wording, stumbling and mumbling while trying to read his cheat sheet off his hand.
So bye bye Teddy. Your food was always great, but I just don't think you got what it takes to be on TV.
***************************
This morning on the flight back from Chicago there was a somewhat morbid article about Billy Mays in the in-flight magazine. An online version appears on the magazine's homepage, the headline still reading: "What's next for this one man brand?"

Katie needs to go home before she embarrasses herself out of a career back home. WOW.
Also, I think Jamika's eylids are made from hummingbird wings. I have literally never seen someone blink that many times is succession before.
"IN succession"... sigh...
Teddy Folkman's exit was overdue and no surprise. However, a reference to his presentation as "so awkward" by Bobby Flay is comical when we are now subjected to Bobby in ties in a seeming effort to increase his credibility beyond one more variation on BBQ sauce. Bobby Flay in a tie is suspect and difficult to watch.
i don't know what's wrong with me, but i'm kind of wishing katie was doing better. i like her take on healthy food and if it was cooked properly i think it would be good.
Please god, let Shamu be the next to go.
Oh, enough with the cheap shot fat jokes. I'm not the PC police - I'm just a fat older guy who was a skinny young man for many years. I made the same stupid jokes y'all are making. I wish for the same come-back to you folks.
Debbie needs to go because she can't be trusted and has shown only one note in her cooking, not because of her aerodynamics. Michael needs to win because he DOES have the cooking chops and he also has a winning personality. And he's a big boy too... hmmm... perhaps body habitus is NOT the deciding factor?
Jacob, that link is to the wrong video.
And the actual judges video is worth checking out. Susie seems really down on Jeffrey. She also comes off as even more annoying and self-important, which is amazing since she seemed like such a self-centered douche to begin with.
To Anon 11:13 -
The judges actually (gasp!) made a really good observation about Michael when they said he, and I'm paraphrasing, "kills in a room but sucks the life out of a camera." That's a very interesting predicament, and I'm not so sure it can be remedied easily.
I would like to know what Bobby would have done with blueberries and lobster. Seriously, when they are *that* critical of a dish, then why doesn't Bobby (presumably the judge with the most culinary expertise) pipe up and say, "For example, I would have made..." It would help the audience understand that the failure was related to the contestant's lack of culinary expertise rather than just the impossibility of the task. I mean, if someone out there has an idea, please, I would love to know. At my house we can't think of a thing!

The judges kept saying the same thing about Aaron. Except that he couldn't even do the room. (Any one remember his Vegas fiasco. Painful even now to think about. They had to change the rules to let him continue.) I think at one point they basically called him incoherent which made it all the harder for them to carry him through and award him the show.
I'd love Michael to do a show taped in front of a live studio audience. Similar to the taping of Paula's Party or Martha's talk show style.
Lobster roll with blueberry slaw!
3:42 pm -- lobster roll with blueberry slaw sounds awesome, BUT, does that count as one dish? Or do you mean lobster roll with the slaw on top? Either way, sounds good. I wish Bobby would give examples of what they could have done with the task!!!!!
Thank Goodness he is GONE!!!!!
re aaron: (Any one remember his Vegas fiasco. Painful even now to think about. They had to change the rules to let him continue.)
reverse discrimination for all the non black contestants that season..... ASK THE SUPREME COURT!!
Sorry Aaron fans -if you are you are out there he is ignorant and can not speak the English language.
Thank God Teddy's gone. It was PAINFUL watching him speak. And he's so two-faced.
Anon 1:47, the only thing that I can think of to do with lobster and blueberries is to cook the lobsters and then make a fresh salsa out of the blueberries and tomatoes or mango. I don't know what else he was given in his basket though...
I'd love Michael to do a show too. He has grown on me and it's obvious he can cook.
I don't get the whole "trust" issue. Who cares? It's a cooking show on FN based on entertainment.
Teddy always looked like he was on the verge of killing someone
Weird, because he did a nice job when he was in a Throwdown against Bobby
He must have stopped taking his meds since then
Bug Eyes has got to be next to go, and she needs to take her loud, obnoxoious, valley girl "gag-me-with-a-spoon" talk and get the fock outta there!
In fact, I want Debbie or the stay @ home mom or Jemika to punch her in the face really hard. Yes, she's THAT grating.
And where are her culinary skills if she's undercooking meat twice?!!
