Her Name was Martha, She Was a Mean Girl

TMZ is reporting about a supposed celebrity feud between "domestic divas" Rachael Ray and Martha Stewart... again! And it's all over: Barry Manilow?

Evidently, Martha opened her live show yesterday with a monologue that showed her hesitant disapproval of Rachael Ray airing her show with Barry Manilow on the same day (and at the same time in New York, where both shows are based).

You can watch the
video at TMZ, but it's not working for me right now. Thus, I cannot confirm or deny that this monologue really includes this quote gossip-rag Page Six reports:

"I've never met Rachael Ray - I think she's fun and lovely - but, you know, we have Barry Manilow live this morning, and he taped an episode of the Rachael Ray show that was supposed to air tomorrow. But for some reason, they pushed the show up to today, and now Barry is on two shows at once. He's live with us, but it's really not fair to the artist because these performers deserve to reach as big of an audience as possible. But anyway, we have him here. Live."

That sounds exactly like Martha, to me, so I don't doubt she said it. Jared and I have watched a few segments of Martha's show recently (just because it's on in-between others and NOT at the same time as Rachael's here in D.C.) and she seems more uptight than ever-- even in this laid-back atmosphere. When she cooks with a guest, she is completely focused on her bowl or what she's cutting and barely pays attention to what the guest is saying. She's like a mom pretending to pay attention to her kid while she's busy doing something else:

Guest:
So, I'm starring in a movie...

Martha:
Oh, uh huh.

Guest:
Yeah, with Julia Roberts.

Martha:
Well, that'll be fun.

Guest:
Yeah... and Frank Sinatra. He came back from the dead just to be in this movie.

Martha:
Oh, I see.

Guest:
And it tells the life story of a woman from New Jersey who went on to be a billionaire, only to go to jail after some shady stock scandal.

Martha:
Well, that sounds nice. Now, hand me that rolling pin so I can finish this.

Do you wanna know how many shows Barry has been on recently?

EVERYTHING! That's so silly of Martha to complain about Rachael, when he had already appeared on every TV show you could possibly appear on! AND Martha and Rachael do not appear at the same time in every market. Sheesh!
Martha shoulda just sang:
"Oh, Barry- well you came and you gave without taking but I sent you away, oh Barry- well you went on her show, now I'm shaking. And I need you today, oh Barry"

I saw the show and she did say that. She should have just let it go. I watch (tape) both shows and woudn't have thought anything about it.

martha is soo annoying. i've noticed it from the very beginning when her show first started, that she does not care what her guests are saying. and what REALLLY bothers me is when she cuts them off! it's so obvious she has no interest in her guests.

I will speak up here -- I agree with Martha -- if Rachel's show with Barry was scheduled to air on Friday -- why switch it to air on Thursday!? I am just wondering here. I would hope that Rachel or her company didn't do this on purpose -- it wouldn't be like Rachel to do something like this. Hopefully it was just a mistake. I like both women for who they are -- and Martha is just who she is -- bossy, rich, strong, business minded, and focused. She is just watching out for her livelihood. What is so wrong with that?

I agree with the last comment. The New York market is a very important market for talk shows due to its size. That's why Martha was concerned that Rachael was taking viewers away from her show.

I do agree that it's weird Rachael Ray producers chose to move their Barry show up one day. They claim it was to have the "strongest lead-in show" possible, but who knows. I doubt Rachael had any say in the matter.

And I realize New York is a huge, major market for Martha. However, if viewers were already tuned in to her program in the beginning, why even both explaining that Barry is on Rachael's show at the same time? I'm sure there were many Martha viewers who had no idea he was on both (and she would have just kept all the ones she had in the first place).

I also think it's kind of silly to even HAVE martha and rachael on at the same time in NYC. I realize the business decision behind it, but come on... sheesh!

Really? Do we really think that Barry Manilow is a big enough draw to take viewers away or bring viewers to any show? I am guessing the target demographic for these shows-- people in their 20s, 30s and 40s, probably are not madly TiVoing Barry Manilow appearances. Just a hunch. If it was, say, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie and Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn all appearing together, okay, I see the problem. But Barry F-ING Manilow?
