The MILF Melee

It turns out the United States isn't the only uptight country when it comes to using what some people deem "foul language" on TV.

The BBC has cleared popular talkshow host Jonathan Ross of "breaching standards" by referring to Nigella Lawson as MILF on air.

" He did not spell out what the acronym stood for - but many viewers would have been aware of its meaning."

Shockingly, Jonathan has used this abhorrent acronym before... to describe the queen of pop, Madonna!

"This is not the only time Jonathan has used the phrase - he described Madonna as 'the original Milf' during the BBC's Live Earth coverage."

Haha... he sounds like a fun guy. The article also quotes Jonathan as saying if anyone offered him goose for Christmas lunch he would "s*** on their couch".

Why can't we get these kind of sound bytes from Larry King?!

I apologize for the lack of posting yesterday and for still not getting around to posting the shots of Rachael in her new 30MM kitchen. If anyone has found some shots of the kitchen online, please send them my way. I can pull them from the video, but it's actually quite an involved process.

I'll be back on the posting train soon, though. Thanks for keeping me updated with all the bits of news and gossip that I miss!

Glad I'm finally getting a DVR so I can actually watch Nigella's show once in a while. For such a high-profile tv chef, FN certainly doesn't have her on much, do they? It always startled me when she popped up in the TNFNS opening.

Why they've buried Nigella on Sumdays, and now moved her to Sunday MORNINGS, is a mystery. More Nige, less Giada, if you ask me.

FN doesn't even bother to air promos for Nigella anymore.

Much as I enjoy Nigella's narration, her recipes are awfully, well, British: peas and lettuce? twice-baked potatoes with cubed mozzarella cheese and ketchup? cream cheese and jam sandwich? There's the occasional yummy-looking chocolate-y thing, but otherwise, her food's a bit of a dud.

Still, I'm hoping she comes back for a second season.

Has anyone noticed the weird film filter effect that is put on the video for the new 30 Minute Meals? I don't like it. Its like gauzy or hazy or something. Can't put my finger on it.

Frankly I find the way they deal with Nigella to be quite weird. From everything I've heard, Nigella Feasts was quite popular and she has been very well received by the US audience. So they run the show on Sundays, then repeat, then for the longest time, in many schedules and even on the FN website, they were calling "Nigella Bites" "Nigella Feasts". Very strange. So now I imagine they will do with that like they did Jamie Oliver, play like 10 episodes 300 times.
And then they had a 1-second part of her asking "WHO" would be The Next Food Network Star but she never played any part in the series. Even on Project Runway, they jetted off the contestants to Paris - Business Class! - to meet a French Fashion designer. How cool it would be to jet TNFNS contestants off to London to meet with Nigella. But noooo...they never leave New York..I think next year the mission should be to send them to East Hampton, to Ina's door unannounced...the first one able to borrow 5 jars of REALLY GOOD mayonnaise and tickle Jeffery's tummy is the winner. Another field trip could out to visit Aunt Sandy. Here the contestants have to pick out the shickingly egregious things Aunt Sandy does - like "Um, Sandra, an Egg McMuffin with mustard and sour cream on top is NOT Eggs Benedict". Contestants also have to answer the Question of the Ages (TM): If Aunt Sandy has no time to cook and has to be calorie-, fat-, salt- and chemical-laden ingredients, why does she has time to spend 8 hours on a tablescape and even coordinating her freaking KITCHEN and wardrobe for every show? Another question to be answered: Would Aunt Sandy go all mommy-dearest on the kids if they inadvertently broke the tablescape? I'm guessing yes.

I was assuming that the "Nigella Feasts" shows on FN were new episodes of a new show while later on Food Network aired reruns of Nigella's old show "Nigella Bites"? Am I correct? Either way it IS odd how the Food Network pushed Nigella under the rug considering she is a huge star and very popular. Seems like some other women on the network have various shows on constantly and in prime time!

::But noooo...they never leave New York::

Well, they *did* go all the way to New Jersey for the Fort Dix challenge :)

"Nigella Feasts" is a different show than "Bites" to accompany the new(ish) cookbook of the same name. It makes me wonder if they're waiting for some contractual issues to be cleared up before she is officially "launched."

Yes, it was quite weird. For a period of like 2 months, Nigella Bites was advertised as Nigella Feasts after tr the episodes of Nigella Feasts had ended. It was perfectly reasonable to re-show NB but just strange how they made that "mistake" of mislabeling the show for so long. You would think they would be eager to strike a new deal as she seems quite popular in the US as well.

Speaking of MILFs...one of our favorite episodes of "Barefoot Contessa" is on right now...the one where Ina cooks a beach picnic for her friend and her volleyball playing daughter. When it opens, Ina says her greatest line ever :

"I've never been one for going to the beach and laying out in the sun..."

Ahh...who doesn't love this woman? :-)

Jesse, I have to disagree with the best Ina line (although there are many superb contenders). My absolute favorite line has to be at the end of an episode where a friend brings her a bottle of wine (as a thank-you for dinner, maybe?) and she turns to the camera with bottle in hand and says, "Well, here's my dinner." Cut to the credits!

A close runner-up is when she hosts the nautical-themed meal and disses Sandra Lee says something like, "I'm all for making tables look nice, but when people start talking about things like 'tablescapes,' it makes me sick."

Such a delight :-)

"More Nige, less Giada, if you ask me." No. Giada, unlike Rachel and Sandra, can actually cook. Nigella I have never seen in action, though and can say she's easy on the eyes.

^Agree with Lester. If Giada was all about her breasts and not about her cooking, I would watch Good Eats and call it a day on FN.

Um, I wrote this letter to Rachael about her appalling set a while back and I included some okay screenshots--here's the link:
http://heartnibbler.wordpress.com/2007/07/11/open-letter-to-rachael-ray-1/

And the film quality for 30MM hasn't been on all the new episodes, but I hate it as well.
