Did you watch Down Home with the Neelys?

Did you watch? According to the Food Network, a whole lot of you did. In fact, it was the network's highest-rated daytime debut!

"Down Home with the Neelys" became the highest-rated series debut in the five-year history of Food Network's popular "In the Kitchen" weekend block after its Saturday, February 2 premiere (11am ET/PT). The new show, featuring Pat and Gina Neely, African American restaurateurs from Memphis, TN who create approachable Southern BBQ comfort food, was watched by nearly 2 million people.
I have some thoughts on the show that I'll share in the days to come (actually trying to edit a video down).

Overall, I thought it was a fair pilot episode. There was some shaky editing and poor choices throughout that I wouldn't have made, but the food was definitely different and unique.

Even if you didn't feel like trimming membrane off a rack of ribs all day, did it at least make you want to drive to Memphis and pick up some of this famous couple's food?

I watched! Pretty much by accident, but I was glad when I realized it was their debut show. I enjoyed watching Pat but Gina was simply too much for me. She must drive the rest of the Neely's crazy. She seemed like she was overcompensating for marrying into the clan.

It DID make me want some of that BBQ spaghetti.

I felt like all they did in the episode was feature the same recipes when they were on Road Tasted. Mrs. Neely sorta reminds me of New York from I Love New York. This definitely didn't make me want to drive to Memphis for some bbq, but that's probably because I'm biased and don't like bbq. I'm interested to see what they'll do in future episodes.

I was totally unimpressed. Mrs.Neely is real annoying.

I cannot see how they can sustain an ongoing series featuring just BBQ unless they start reinventing stuff. Maybe they can eak out a season or so and at that point, we will know just about every type of BBQ dish known to man.

Um, okay but correct me if im wrong but the food network has shows that are just Italian and all about grilling so why not bbq?

I didnt actually watch the show but I have been "this close" to boycotting the food network for their obvious lack of diversity in their programming. Not just African American, but Asian American and until recently Latin American. I can't see how the network aims to cultivate an appreciation of diversity in food but not its chefs.

I hear what you are saying, but how many things can you smoke or grill BBQ style ?

I remember reading somewhere that enrollment amongst African Americans at culinary schools nationwide is sadly declining.Perhaps too heavy a topic for this blog, but maybe Jake will give it go.

If the Neelys can be a role model in anyway, this will be good for food, IMO.

I completely agree Prisca! I enjoyed Pat and his brother but Gina was just too much. That last part where she made her MIL's strawberry shortcut cake and everyone said it was good and she made a comment like "watch out momma" I thought was in poor taste. Seemed like she was trying real hard to upstage her MIL.

I'm not so sure about the food yet, but they were Fun and Lively. I'll watch it again, even if I'm not big on BBQ. Gina didn't bug me at all.

I watched the debut show too. Well I liked their personalities, but the food was not very impressive, especially that shortcake. It's even worse than a 'semi-homemade' cake or a 'I don't bake' Rachael's cake.

At 2/06/2008 7:04 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I liked it -- but a little of Gina goes a long way! And the cake was nothing more than the JELLO STRIPE IT RICH cake from the 80s. Long before anyone ever coined the term "semi homemade."

I LOVED it - I think this show is a nice bit of fresh air. I don't really like BBQ - I'm a vegetarian, but I love fresh new ideas especially the BBQ spaghetti which could be made with tofu. I liked everyones personality. My Shuband already made the coleslaw -minus all the sugar.

I didn't like it at all. I found Gina particularly annoying. The food was uninspiring. Certainly didn't create a longing in me to travel to Memphis. Oh well.

i haven't yet seen the episode, but my tivo is bursting with it...but when i hear someone is trying to upstage her MIL...i can't blame her. i can't cook a darned dish without my husband saying "It was good, but not quite as good as my mom's." Gag me.
So if Neely lady does manage to upstage her MIL, good luck to her!

I WATCHED THE SHOW TO AND I FOUND GINA TO BE VERY ANNOYING AND NARCISSISTIC. I THINK SHE BELITTLES HER HUSBAND ALL THE TIME. SO I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST ME SO I ASKED MY HUSBAND TO WATCH AND HE ASKED ME TO TURN THE CHANNEL.THE COMMENTS SHE MAKE ABOUT HER IN-LAWS ESP. HER MIL ARE TACKY. MAYBE PAT SHOULD DO THE SHOW BY HIMSELF AND LET HER CONTINUING RUNNING THINGS BEHIND THE SCENCES. LESS IS BETTER. SORRY.

The recipes seem interesting but Gina is so annoying and such a chatterbox. I like Pat and wish he had the show by himself. My advice is to mute the tv and put it on closed caption. This might help you get a idea of the food without Gina's constant chattering or better than that just go to the web site and get the recipes.

I hope someone is reading these comments and will let Gina know to dial it back a couple. She is loud and overbearing. The show is called "Down Home With the Neelys" Not "In the Kitchen with Gina's Mouth".

I think I'm a little late to be commenting on this, but my husband and I had Food Network on this morning and this show came on. It was SO horrible that I had to immediately go online and see what other people thought of it.

I hate everything about this show. While Pat is pretty unoffending, Gina is loud-mouthed, cackling, and shrill. Listening to her shriek, "SPIIIICCEEE-FAIRY!!" while dribbling parsley (which, incidentally, isn't a spice) onto one of her uninspired dishes has pushed me right over the edge into making an online forum comment, which is something I never do.

Food Network needs to pull this one post-haste. Their recipes are the same food you can buy at the deli counter in a Harris Teeter and their obnoxious kitchen antics, including dragging every known relation they've got into the kitchen, is overcompensating for their lack of interesting content. Also, the kitchen set is unfunctional (you can't see their stove or the pots on it) and the split-screen design while they're cooking is distracting.

i did not think anyone could be more annoying than rachael ray, boy was I ever wrong. gina neely is the most obnoxious person on the food channel. her jokes are senseless, her banter with her husband is contrived, and her lack of cooking skills evident. get her off and get some real prople back on v

This is AWFUL!!!! The way they use sexsual termnology with their cooking is discusting!!!! My sixteen year old daughter and nephew love Foodnetwork and she could'nt believe how they talked about food. Don't our kids see enough on TV and now Foodnetwork. Shame on them.

At 4/18/2008 3:57 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I don't think this will be one of my favorite shows. As mentioned by someone else here......YES.....she reminds me of NewYork too. But hey, that obnoxious, spoiled brat has been on TV for a while, so maybe Gina will be a hit.
I really looked forward to the show. I have a distinct feeling that Pat is the cook in that family, and Gina is window dressing. I'm ready to pull the curtain on her though. Her skills are about par with my 9yo., though she might be a little better. At least my daughter knows the difference between an herb and a spice.
Maybe if Gina could tone herself down the show would fly. I do like BBQ.

Gina needs to really tone it down. I will not watch the show anymore, she is too much for me to take.

Interesting comments posted here, I think that this show brings something that the foodnetwork has lacked for a while: ethnic diversity; another loving couple like the Barefoot Contessa; and something other than Italian cooking (gimme a break already). It gets tiring watching the same type of people cook the same things over and over. I think this is a good idea...even Paula's show(who I love) started off a bit rocky. Show the Nealy's some love, they'll rise to the occasion.

I absolutely love this show. This is by far, the best show on Food Network. I love the chemistry between the Neely's. Gina brings comedy and life, and Pat provides such a positive image for men of all ethnicities. They have a chemistry that cannot be faked. Thank you for finally adding some diversity to Food Network. Pat and Gina are great! Keep up the great work guys!

Ok, now this comment is coming from a black woman who has been waiting for African Americans to be represented on the food network. I awaited this show with excitement and when I sat down that day to watch it, I got this mess! I cannot see how any person of color or african american can watch this JUNK and say that the show was great. Im going to be honest with you. If someone truly loves it they have to be white and are enjoying the perpetuation of the negative image of blacks in T.V. How dare the food network air something so offensive to a people. Now don't get me wrong, I like Pat. I would watch the show If it were only him. He has a way with the camera but GINA IS THE EPITOME OF THE IMAGE BLACK WOMEN HAVE BEEN FIGHTING FOR AGES! The woman is loud, overtly sexual, and minstrel. FOOD NETWORK PLEASE, GET RID OF HER! SHE IS RUINING THE SHOW AND EMBARRASSING THAT FAMILY. Stop offending us with this show. Either lose gina or lose the show altogether and start over again.
I welcome any comments on my remarks.

First let me state that I am an African American woman who has also been waiting for The Food Network to show some diversity. When I tuned into this show, I said out loud "be careful what you wish for". I can't watch this show! The whole premise is sickening. Gina makes me want to jump off a cliff! Her mouth never stops running with crazy comments and innuendo. It's enough already. I would like to see more minority focused shows on the network, but this...not so much. A little of Gina goes a loooonnng way!!!

Speaking as a male of colour, I've watched a couple of episodes of « Down home with the Neely » but not the pilot episode. I thought this show should be named something like « Gettin' Down with Gina Neely ». Her mouth is full of sexual innuendos. It's fine to have that every now and then but every 10 seconds she would say something like, "Show my your muscles daddy" or "And you know that's hot, baby" etc. Pat plays a bit into that role too, so he's not fault-less either.

Indeed, I agree with one of the previous commentators who said African-American women have been trying to battle that image of the overly sexual and somewhat of a mammy type all of which Gina Neely personifies in the way she plays herself on the show « Gettin' Down with Gina Neely » or rather I mean « Down Home with the Neelys ».

I watched this show because there was nothing else on TV I could barley stand 10 minutes of the show before I had to change it. Mrs.Neely is SO ANNOYING! and I thought Rachael Ray was the annoying one Mrs.Neely is so over the top and fake she really need to tone it down. I can tell you right now I will never watch this show again I was completely turned off right away. I really hope the producers take a look at this forum and take those two off the air! Sad to I love every single show on food network except for this one.

Please Please Take it off the air!!

I have watched the show a couple of times and every time I end up turning the channel. The spice fairy needs to go some where, I'm glad there in love and all but come on. I'm here to watch a "food" network show to learn not sex ed. I turn up my nose b/c the spice fairy is shaken her booty and shovin' beaters down her throat.
Big "daddy" I mean Pat can stay and leave "spice fairy" I mean Gina be... hind the scenes maybe at hommmmmmmmme.

I'm appalled at the majority of the stupid comments I've read on this blog about Down Home with the Neelys. Just goes to show that the "green-eyed monster" can most definitely rear its ugly head in many different ways. I am ALL FOR such a unique and FINALLY, different cooking show such as this on the Food network. I think Pat & Gina Neely BOTH bring a breath of fresh air to an undeniably stale & boring lineup of cooks otherwise. I enjoy both Neelys and only watch the Food Network now because they are a part of the lineup. If it weren't for the Neely's show, I wouldn't watch the Food Network at all! Judging by what I've read by most others on this blog, most seem jealous of the fact that two attractive, successful & in love African Americans are married, on tv, and showing up the "stalemate" Everyday Italian/Rachael Ray types making the most juvenile-like recipes ever imaginable. Shame on the fact that most of you negative-minded bloggers are White like me and even more sad, is that the few African American bloggers here, seem to be "sell-outs!" Pat AND Gina, you are wonderful just like your unique recipes. Keep it up!

I watch "Down Home With The Neely's" every weekend. I think they are a blast. They are real down home people and I love that they are so loving toward eachother. Pat seems like a true southeren gentleman and Gina seems like the best friend everyone would like to have. They are a very warm and approachable couple, and the food they prepare looks very easy and delicious. I've tried a few of the recipes and they are as good as they look.

Some of you people need to grow up. Gina is obviously a woman{it matters not if she is black or white or whatever.} who is very comfortable with herself and doesn't need anybodys approval for who she is. She is comfortable and secure in herself. She has a nice personality and your certanly not bored watching her.

I can't handle this show. I truly believe that they have good cooking techniques, ideas, recipes, etc.... (I live in CA so southern cooking really isn't my style, therefore I actually haven't tried their recipes). BUT, the constant smarmy love dialog (wife, family, our mothers) and the out-takes are boring. I'm watching for food! So let's strike a deal with them, they cook, we watch, and then FTV pays them. They're in it for the $ and I want the FOOD entertainment. Off my soapbox now....

I watched the show and it was very entertaining. If it wasn't for Gina the show would be quite boring. That what makes the show unique..a husband and wife team who both have their OWN personalities and create down home dishes at the same time. I am from Memphis and I have never had Neely BBQ, but their food looks good and I would watch them anyday over Rachel Ray.

I am black and Gina Neely is no different than a lot of us who are confident about ourselves and our relationships with not only our husbands, but our in-laws as well. I personally enjoyed the show, and the recipes are definitely something I would try. They cook more than BBQ which gives the show versatility. To all those who don't like Gina change the channel and watch Martha Stewart. Maybe she's just right for you.

I rarely watch, but do check out the recipes. The fried deviled eggs are really good. Gina is totally annoying. I am not sure what the FN powers that be want...they really, really get down on Kelsey in "The Next Food Network Star" for being too "over the top." Personally, I'd watch her every day of the week of the week over Gina Neely.

Being a Food Network JUNKIE for many years, I had been wondering if anyone else shared my opinions about THE NEELYS, and lo and behold, there it was. I am in complete agreement with the negative comments. Not only is this show SIMPLY AWFUL, but their recipes are limited and completely boring. As a couple, they seem to be putting on an act that I find completely uninteresting, and Gina has one of the most annoying personalities I have ever witnessed. She is a shrew that needs to be tamed - only not on national television. It’s been reported that Paula Deen and her sons found them and brought them to the Food Network, but inasmuch as Paula herself is way up there on the annoying scale, it’s no wonder. Let’s hope that the FN producers’ latest “road tasted” venture is an indication that the Neely’s are on their way back to Memphis for good.

I couldnt agree more.

I am a Food Network junkie. In my next incarnation, i hope to be one of their stars, as cooking and entertaining are true passions of mine.

I look to their programming for guidance and inspiration.

I think their latest choices for hosts is a pathetic attempt at representing the African-American community.

The Neely's make me sick. I think they are unprofessional, unprepared and uninspiring. Listening to "New York" calling Pat "daddy" is nauseating.

If FN was smart and cared about their audience at all they would pull the plug on this show - quickly!

For all the so-called black people posting about Gina being the sterotypes that black women are trying to leave behind, Gina doesn't have to represent ALL black people. She only has to represent who she is, if you dont like it don't watch it. How could one woman represent all black women? Would she have to be watered down to make you feel comfortable? She is who she is and shouldn't have to change to supposedly represent everyone in her race.

With that said, yeah, she is a little annoying with the constant talking, but then again her husband barely talks unless she speaks first. He'd be boring to watch alone. The few times I have watched I enjoyed the show.

I have really given this show a chance. I have watched it at least a half dozen times. Unfortunately, I can't get into the cooking because I just can't stand Gina. She is extremely annoying to me. To find this forum, I googled "Neely's is annoying" and amazingly this is what I found. If she could tone it down, not a little but tremendously, I'd probably be able to concentrate on the actual cooking. Thanks for listening.

so far all ive seen is crappy food by a guy that seems to have to prove he loves his wife every single moment.
its cute, but it sure as hell aint anthony bourdain

Yes, Gina is annoying. Her voice has a shrill to it that grates on my nerves and she often talks down to Pat, but even with her faults, I appalled by some of the comments that I have read. Gina looks nothing like New York. It supports the notion that white people think all black people look alike. She is no more annoying than Rachel Ray, who annoys me to no end when she says "delish". And let's not forget Guy Fieri and his over-the-top personality.

I have watched the show but I can't do much with the recipes. I don't cook with a lot of sugar so most of their recipes are lost on my kitchen. I was very happy that Food Network brought some color into the programming but I was happy before as well. Gina is a bit over the top but I believe they want her to be that animated. She reminds me of a southern woman and her laugh is refreshing but after a while, it gets to be a bit much. Everyone has a right to their opinion.

SOME OF THEIR RECIPES ARE ONES THAT I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO TRY. GINA DOES HAVE A TENDENCY TO RUN HER MOUTH, BUT MY PROBLEM WITH THE NEELY'S IS ALL THE SEXUAL INNUENDOS. HE VERBALIZES AND SHE IS EITHER BOUNCING HER BREASTS OR GRINDING HER BUTT.... I FIND THAT OFFENSIVE AND MAKES ME ASK THE QUESTION ARE THEY TEACHING VIEWERS TO COOK OR ARE THEY SELLING SEX? THEY NEED TO TAKE THEIR "SUGAR" OUT OF THE KITCHEN AND PUT IT IN THE BEDROOM WHERE IT BELONGS. GINA SURE DOES THINK SHE'S A SEX QUEEN AND SHE IS QUITE FULL OF HERSELF.

Leaving their race behind, I find the Neelys, like Paula Deen, over-the-top Southerners with recipes that are sure to contribute to obesity and diabetes. Nothing healthy on either show and they could all stand to lose weight before their artieries clog up from all the butter and cream that they eat. It's a fact that the South reigns supreme in people who are obese plus. I am not a "foodie" like these folks and guess that there's an audience who enjoys the over the top antics of these three.

I've tried giving this show a chance but Gina and Pat's constant flirting (complete with some risque comments) and calling each other momma and daddy are just obnoxious. How many more times can Gina grind up against Pat, call him daddy and shake her chest at him. Why can't they save that stuff for offscreen. She even flirts with Pat's own brothers, although she does it when Pat isn't in the scene with them. Very tacky woman.

Seeing a lot of the things they cook, I'm shocked at how they have a successful restaurant. Some of the food they make is as crappy as Sandra Lee's food from Semi Homemade.

To the person above who claims to be close to the Neely's: If you are such a close friend then why are you anonymously defending them? No, nobody is jealous of them, I would never want to be famous for acting the way Gina does on national tv. It IS possible to be entertaining without acting like your about to make love to your spouse on the kitchen counter on TV. Please pass that on to your close friends the Neelys if you really are a friend.

The Neelys are Great! I set my recorder to record the series so that I don't miss an episode. The haters among the viewer are either uninformed, stereotypical, individuals who do not understand, or respect other cultures. I bet they did not vote for President Obama either Some things never change. Those who choose to watch the Neelys can learn a thing or two about their idiotic concepts of how staid and sanitized food shows should be. Come on, live a little! If you prefer, check out the schedule for Rachel Ray, Martha Stewart and others. Heck you may be able to revive some video of the late Julia Childs!

I have seen every Neely show since its inception. While it pains me to agree with the negative, I must. My question is: what qualifies Gina & Pat to have a show? Where is the expertise? The Neely’s are not food experts, this is apparent in every show. Listen closely during each episode, you’ll find most things said are thoughtless ramblings. I watch FN for edification & entertainment both absent in this show. The Neely’s are not good communicators. I have yet to be impressed with their knowledge or teaching technique but rather appalled by the disillusionment. Their authentic “down-home” lingo doesn’t bother me, it’s the lack of content (the flow of one idea to another) that is a miss. The show is without charm, class, quality and void inspirational enhancement to the everyday cook/entertainer.

@ Michael in CA. I don't particularly like the show or Gina either but most of what's on the food network has little to do with qualifications or expertise. The same could be said about most of what's on the Food Network. Why hold the Neelys to a standard that no one else is being held to at The Food Network. Personality rules on TV. Even though most of the people posting here agree about Gina, obliviously we are in the minority.

The show is just overtly sexual. It awkward, inapropriate and immature. I'm very happy that they're an affectionate, loyal, close couple, but i watch the food network for the recipes, not for overtly sexual innuendos every 10 seconds. thats what the soap operas are for. Instead of the show being about how great the food is that they cook (which I'm sure it is), I feel its just a spot that this couple has 30 minutes to prove to the viewers how in love they are. We get it- just cook for God's sakes.

Gina is a total irritating MAMMY. She's irritating and fits the stereotype to a T.

The fat, the voice, the cheesing, the over acting, the playing...the inability to speak properly and the CONSTANT sexual tones.

Total Mammy

Gina is sooooo annoying. i cant stand it. I commend the food network for having a black host and showcasing foods favored by the black community. they just found the wrong host. pat is not as bad, he just needs to calm down on the flirting. this is not HBO.

whomever who brought race into the equation is crazy. this has nothing to do with criticizing someone's culture. GINA NEELY IS ONE OF THE WORST FOODNETWORK STARS, along with that blond spiked hair lady

I can not stand this show. Gina Neely is fake and annoying. No married couple behaves this way. Pat & Gina's bantor is contrived and phony. There is nothing redeeming about this show.

Frankly I do not care for either one of them, Pat's gitchy gitcy goo makes me ill and Gina's squealing over the most mundane things is uber a n o y i n g! Bring on some good Thai cooks, or Indian cuisine. Oh and while I am at it FNTV, enough of the yummo, sammies and how great is that.....!

I watch the Neely's regularly and do agree that Gina is "over the top" in her stereotypical behavior. However, I'm more entranced by the load of unhealthy ingredients that go into the recipes, and the complete focus on taste, rather than on health. Both hosts are heavy and probably will grow even fatter as they age (look at the relatives). Hedonistic eating is their mantra and I shake my head in wonderment that one could liberally use bacon, cream, butter etc. in recipes and not know how damaging they are to one's health and waistline. I watch The Barefoot Contessa for the same reason. There is clearly a divide in this country, between "foodies", who swoon over a fattening dish, and those of us who want to control our weight and eat healthfully. It's fun to go over to the "dark side" watching the Neely's and never having to actually eat their food!

Gina is annoing. Can't stand to see her sugary smile or her head bobbing. The worst show ever was when they made Mexican. All she did was roll her tongue, dance around and put her own spin on Mexican food names.
The show where she upstages her mother in law regarding the short cake was inappropriate as well.
The show would be better if it was just Pat and his brother.
I have decided to stop watching (I'm sure FN doesn't care)
Someone should tel her to get a room the next time she is climbing all over him when he is trying to cook. When will FN listen to the masses?

This is one of the more annoying shows that FN broadcasts. They think they are so cute with their touchee feelies....save it for the bedroom.

Get serious and be serious cooks.

I choose to turn off the program

She is so fake. My brother lives in memphis and sees her at the club regularly WITHOUT pat. They're lovey dovey oin TV but I knew by her little side comments something was up. They need a time out on the show and get a therapist for their marriage

God damn these people are so obnoxious and retarded. This woman chops ingredients like a 5 year old, too. It's like watching a 30 minute long Youtube video of some random person cooking a slapdash meal.

Why is this show still on the air? I can't pay attention to what they're cooking because of Gina's mouth and her perverse comments. They make me gag. I'd take RayRay over them any day and thats saying a lot!

I have the Neely's on right now - for a few minutes until I can't stand it any longer. She knows the correct pronounciation of Muffaletta but insists on being a fool about it. She is obnoxious, the bedroom banter, brown sugar comments, his "chuckle" at everything whether funny or not, her O'Jay spins in the kitchen accompanied by squeels - just awful. Please replace them with a real BBQ team from Memphis. Off they go! I agree RachRay is a step up.

thank god I watch for the first time in a long time foodnet work today and the neelys wasn't on my husband and i always has said from day one they needed down home cooking but not like Gina they have no respect for people that don't have a spouse or single people or young adults or children. to much bedroom stuff and family members. We're a black couple and would love to see more cooking and less sex and stupid jokes&comments. To many cooks spoil the food.Just Pat would be find.

As a Strong black woman married with grown married adults. I really hope that the Neelys has read as I did all of the comments and i hope they both will learn from it and really tone themselfs down in their places of business if they act the same way and also if there is a future for them in tv land maybe not Gina but Pat will make a good solo chef I'm sure.Once and a while maybe his brother or mom..More cooking less talk.People are trying to copy recp,'s learn from your mistakes you guys.

I can watch Big Daddy's House all day long because he talks while he cooks And you learn that way the Neely's should take lessons.Make food not love.Bring in your guests at the end of the show.

Racism is alive and well in america! I have never read such hatred wouldn't surprise me if most
are members of the KKK. If you don't like the show don't watch it. The Neely's are human they have feelings, they hurt and cry when offended like the next person. Wouldn't surprise me one bit to see the same folk that left those ugly hate filled comments sitting in someone's church every Sunday talking about God's love, what a dichotomy. I enjoy the Neely's they are not perfect none of us are. I enjoy their fun loving attitude and I enjoy their display of love toward each other. If you read SEX into every little thing they say you have a perverse evil little mind. To the Neely's KEEP ON KEEPING ON, and God Bless EVERYTHING you put your hands to. To the haters you will reap what you sow.

I don't get it. Should we assume it is a racial issue just because we don't like someone? I watched the Neely's today and didn't enjoy the show at all. It had nothing to do with their skin color. Normally I like Pat but today he was extremely annoying. I think Gina especially needs to do more work behind the camera because she is starting to affect Pat's performance. Gina is horrible and it had nothing to do with her skin color.

By the way, I am black. Does that make me racist too?

Kick her off and let her husband have his own show.

Crappy, ill prepared, unhealthy and fat laden, distasteful. The above comments apply to the show, the hosts and the food.

This show would be a lot better with out "Him" in it! I can't stand all the "ya'll and baby stuff." And that laugh he does reminds me of James from the Good Times. He's a bit too much he should tame it down a little. I think food network needs to tell him to lay off. But I enjoy watching her. He's a pervert!

Wow. After reading through most of these comments,I feel like the issue of race came up a lot. Less about race and more about content,or lack thereof. If you find the sexual innuendo to be a bit much, choose other programming. There's lots of other shows to choose from on the Food Network,if the Neely's don't tickle your fancy.

At 12/07/2010 11:48 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I can only watch so much of the Neely's. I love what they cook and their little stories but Gina's personality is too much. All that screaming and jumping around and now Pat's little baby this and baby that is making me turn the channel before the show is even over. IT'S A COOKING SHOW FOOD NETWORK! Let's skip all the other crap.

If you don't like it...don't watch it? That's just stupid. As U.S. citizens in the 21st century paying through the nose for television entertainment, we deserve better. Shows like this simply insult our intelligence. Does Food Network think so little of their viewing audience to expect that we will think crap like this is "good enough"? With all the real talent our country has to offer, we should not be forced to settle with this cheesy level of "Karaoke" quality programming. Just because some people find it entertaining doesn't mean it's good. And another thing; long fingernails and gaudy jewelry have no place in a professional kitchen. I can't stand the thought of a woman touching my food with the same fingers she use to wipe herself earlier with those big poop scoops on the ends -- disgusting! There's no way you can convince me those things are clean underneath!

Wow, this is an actual show! They are terrible. They both annoy the heck out of me. I watched the episode where they made Crispy baked chicken, Mac and Cheese, and peach pie. i watched half of it on mute, because I couldn't stand to hear them talk and make their stupid jokes. What has happened to the Food network. It's like the Neely's just showed up 1 day and the FN gave them their own show. He isn't AS bad as her, but she is just awful.

I live in Memphis and ever since their TV show began their restaurant has suffered from neglect. Last October the health department even shut their restaurant down. I have never thought Neely's was that great anyway. I don't care for their sauce, the meat is not smoked enough, and the service at Neely's (and Pat's uncle Jim's Interstate Barbecue) is always incredibly rude. If you are in Memphis and want some of our delicious BBQ in a good atmosphere where you are treated kindly, go to Central BBQ on Central Avenue or The Barbecue Shop on Madison. You can't go wrong with 90% of the BBQ joints in Memphis, but these two stand out for consistency and service. And by no means go to Corky's --- bleh!

I happened up on them one day and liked them, have watched them a few more times, again, just by happening up on them. What's with all the extreme venom like she's Hitler and Idi Amin rolled into one? It's a cooking show. Such extreme reactions say more about the posters than about the show or her or the recipes. Chill out. Save your vitriol for something that deserves your passion: abuse, poverty, education, politics, TV that promotes violence. Geez, people.
