Sandra Lee: What the hell?

I didn't think I'd return so quickly to my new segment "Sandra Lee: What the hell?" but something she did on this past Saturday's episode warrants yet another post.

While making butterbeer, Aunt Sandy instructs us to put 2 cups of cream soda in the microwave for "about a minute and a half."

The camera then zooms in real close as she enters 1:50 on the microwave.

Watch the video:

But seriously... it's tough to remember if there are 60 or 100 seconds in a minute. Am I right, people? =)

Clearly, Sandra Lee prefers to create her own rules when it comes to units of time and measurement. Don't be slaves to standards!

I guess this explains her original formula for Semi-Homemade: 43% store bought ingredients combined with 85.4% fresh and creative touches. Thankfully someone must have set her straight.

Oh Sandy, I love your no-math-knowing self!

[Thanks to the intrepid TWoP people for first spotting this!]

I totally noticed that when I saw the episode this weekend.

It irritates me SO much when she calls her nephew "Brycer" when we have seen a few times that the boy's name is just BRYCE. Also annoying when she calls her niece "Miss Stephanie" - what is that about?

i think what aunty sandy did was this
ok then, you cook the stuff for 1 and a half minutes right?
inadvertently she hit 1.5 on the pad....which if you think about it 1.5 IS 1 and 1/2 minutes. so she added the 0 big deal.
find something else to pick on!!

as far as her cutesy names for her family, thats just aunt sandy. it does kinda grate tho huh??
i think little brycer is gay anyway....

I've personally never seen these magical microwaves anon seems to have access to, where you enter the time in decimals rather than actual time. Anyone who doesn't know that 1.5 minutes gets entered as 1:30 on the microwave is borderline illiterate.

What I want to know is why it seems that whoever edits/produces her show didn't notice or think it was important enough to make her correct it. I mean since she's not cooking in realtime she can go back and fix what she screwed up--or did they not notice either? What does this say about what they think the intellectual level of their audience is that they can let something like that slide as if nobody will know?

I actually object to this post. I think you were hurtin for material today and this was all you could muster up. A simple math brain fart from Sandra and you decide to make it into something larger than what it is.

Cmon, you can do better than that. Why not pick on the post production editors who chose to ignore the gaff ?

Or pick on the Food Network who make Sandra make some of this crap and pass it off as culinary art ? As I have said before, she is only an employee. I think we should be taking shots at Bob (do you like my name?) Tuschman. He is the genius behind Semi-Homemade.

Actually, no. That's what commentators and bloggers and people do--we comment and gossip about situations and people in the public eye. That's what this blog is about. I'm not saying that regular people don't accidentally do the same thing, but this is what happens when public people slip up, regardless whose "fault" it might have been.

The sound engineers never got blamed when Ashlee Simpson and, more recently, Mariah got caught lipsyncing on live television. Ashlee & Mariah were blamed. That just comes with being a celebrity, no?

You know Rachael would get shit for slipping up. If Aunt Sandy wants to play with the big girls she'd better be ready to take some heat.

1 1/2 minutes is 1:30 not 1:50. She just didn't add a zero she changed the 3 to a 5. You must be a fan.

Actually it was not that big a slip up. Those around the world using the metric system use the 1.5 in many aspects of daily life as it relate to weights and measurements. It regularly is uded to mean one and a half.
Since Aunt Sandy was trained in the CDN Cordon Bleu Gatineau "campus" she probably poured her shots in millilitres, weighed her white sauces in grams, and bought her instant masjed potatoes in kilos.

I still think you need to feed the Aunt Sandy frenzy and this was all you had to nit pick her with. Small potatoes.

Congrats to Aunt Sandy this morning. "Semi-Homemade Cooking with Sandra Lee" is a Daytime Emmy nominee for Outstanding Achievement in Hairstyling. Take THAT, Giada...

I'm sure this will be a post later, but Ina, Giada, Nigella and Bobby Flay are "Outstanding Lifestyle Host" nominees. Yeah, but their hair SUCKS...

I have caught so many slip ups from so many folks (in this case, other than Sandra) that I think it's a very common and overlooked matter.

I've seen Tyler Florence put something in an oven and pull something totally different out, and I saw Wolfgang Puck place liquid in his food processor with the attachement tube in. A moment later the magic of editting happened and it was empty.

So ... big deal. Like said, happens a LOT more than you think!

How many times can you honestly say this has happened to you? I don't know of ANYONE who has entered "1:30" as "1.5".

her microwave might not be that powerful, she's had the same one for the duration for her show. She may have to add 20 sec to the cooking time.
