You're the expert at what, Kelsey?

I'm a little put off by Kelsey's assertion that she is the "expert at fast, fun, and affordable" food, seeing how approx. 90% of Food Network's cooking programs are already dedicated to that basic concept. And, to me, the hosts of those programs all seem like more of an "expert" than Kelsey.

Rachael Ray built her multi-million dollar empire around the concept of fast, fun, and affordable. Perhaps this is an editing issue, but for Kelsey to say she's the expert -- without even recognizing Rachael's initial contribution -- is incredibly brazen.

I'm shocked the judges haven't even brought this up, yet. They thought Kevin's POV was generic?

I wouldn't go on The Next Food Network Star and say my culinary POV is that I'm the expert at high-end, butter and cream-laden, decadent dinners and desserts you eat with your rich friends in the Hamptons, would I?

And even if I was an expert at that, I could not get away with that concept without acknowledging Ina Garten in some way. In fact, TUSCHELSON and Flay would probably tell me to not even TRY that POV-- it's taken!

I think you are being tough on her.
What is she 12? I think she has a lot of promise. She does need to relax a bit and I do get your point about her objective but also think that is the Food Channel's job to have pointed that out long ago before this show aired.

Kelsey is too peppy and can be so annoying. Anyhow, Jacob I wanted to let you know that I tagged you on my blog with a meme, please check it out and share a little about you! Thanks for keeping this blog updated all the time, you rock!

I said it in another comment, but I'll reiterate here: She is practically every other female FN star we already have. She doesn't seem new, hip or different compared to Rach or this Mary Nolan chick or Robin Miller. To me, she's just another one of those. Let's get something fresh in there.

When Kelsey was introducing her product last night, she even said something like "it will get your meal on the table in under 30 minutes". It was worded almost exactly like Rachael Ray's intro to 30 Minute Meals.

I think there is room for another Food Network show based on easy and affordable cooking, since that's a style of cooking that is very appealing to a wide range of viewers, but Kelsey will have to work harder to differentiate herself from other hosts, more than someone like Nipa, for example, who has a cooking style that isn't well represented on Food Network right now.

The is the first season of this show where I am actually not rooting for anyone because everyone....EVERYONE!! is SO completely obnoxious!!!

I don't know if you're being all that hard on Kelsey - this is the big leagues, so you have to play with the big kids! (You meaning Kelsey, not meaning you). Though I'm starting to think I'm an ass for finding her rant at the end of the ep last night about how she doesn't want to be annoying, well, funny. And annoying, of course. But before you said it, I was still wondering exactly what Kelsey was offering the Food Network.

As for Kevin: you're too right, what he was offering wasn't generic. Odd, yes, but never generic.

The last thing this network needs is another smiling, chatty, and saccharine bobblehead. But in order to prevent that, they would need to eliminate over half of the current contestants.

I am orginally from Utah and I am Mormon, (which I can assume Kelsey is too, she wore a BYU shirt in the 2nd episode). Her personality fits in with the culture. Most everyone from Utah acts that way. I am shocked that the selection committee thinks she is fake. From everything I can tell, I don't think she is fake, she really is that way.

I think she is cute. I would watch her show. As a young, 20 something married girl myself, I would love to see a new take on Rachael Ray's original idea. To be completely honest I find Rachael irritiating on a daily basis, but that does not keep me from watching her show. I think it kind of comes with the territory! GO KELSEY!

I disagree that Rachael Ray's food is "affordable." I'll give you "fun" and possibly "fast" (though I have yet to finish one of her 30 minute meals in less than an hour), but the cost of some of her ingredients is pretty high. For example, fire-roasted tomatoes (which she uses in many recipes) are $2/can where I live. She also often uses specialty cheeses that are $10/pound or more.

Not that I'm a big Kelsey fan but if someone came onto FN with food that is TRULY affordable (like how to make ground beef go farther, etc.) I think that would be something I'd watch.

How to make ground beef go farther? Hmmm. Eat less? Use less?

Utah = Stepfordville (everyone acts the same)

Say "NO!" to Kelsey!

I actually like Kelsey. Yes, she is a bit too perky at times, but I thought she sounded sincere. I find it amusing that the FN bigwigs slammed her for being fake when Rachael Ray is one of the most hyper people I have ever met. I usually have a headache and need a nap after watching one of her shows. Boy, Giada sure wasn't a fan.

I like Kelsey, too, but she should ratchet back her approach, and she shouldn't be so imitative. The best advice she can follow is "be yourself." It has worked for so many personalities...some on TFN and many in some area of show business or another.
