An Act of Desperation? Lisa Garza Claims Censorship

I was kind of surprised to read this email I got from Lisa Garza last night at 1:24am:

"Last nights Next Food Network Star show was a COMPLETE chop job. My friends and families blogs are being removed from the food network 'Judges Blog' section on the show's page at FN.com. I am being censored, reprimanded, and have been instructed not to comment or share the truth. My posts at D [Magazine] are being edited as well. The link to the REAL Rachel Ray Show segment that aired last week, which is dramatically different from what aired on the Food Network, has been deleted from the blog as well. BIG BROTHER, what country do we live in after all??? What an insult to the public that they feel they can do this after Rachel aired it in its entirety last Thursday."

I'll give Lisa the benefit of the doubt for now and let you watch what did air on Rachael Ray last Thursday:

Yes, Lisa didn't completely shut down as much as what was shown on last night's episode. She continued talking and thew out a few more bullet points about cooking for kids that were completely edited out.

STILL, the segment on Rachael Ray was also edited! In all likelihood, the part where Lisa froze up was edited out. Despite each contestant getting four minutes to cook, Lisa's entire segment that aired was less that four minutes long—and that included the banter between Rachael, Lisa & her girl scout that wasn't even included in the four minute time limit.

So, while RR chose to edit out the bad stuff, NFNS chose to focus on it. That's NOT censorship, just bad luck.

Rachael Ray's producers and editors cut their show with the intention of putting Rachael and her guests in the best of light. Next Food Network Star producers and editors cut the show however the hell they want to, using bits and pieces to tell whatever story they want.

And "Big Brother," Lisa? Let me remind you of RULE 22 of the competition:

"22. Applicants acknowledge, understand, and agree that the Released Parties' use or revelation of Personal Information and Recordings as defined in these Eligibility Requirements may be embarrassing, unfavorable, humiliating, and/or derogatory and/or may portray him or her in a false light. Each applicant agrees to release, discharge and hold harmless the Released Parties from any and all claims (including, without limitation, claims for slander, libel, defamation, violation of rights of privacy, publicity, personality, and/or civil rights, depiction in a false light, intentional or negligent infliction of emotional distress, copyright infringement, and/or any other tort and/or damages arising from or in any way relating to the submission of a Participant Application, participation in the selection process, participation in the Program, the use of the Personal Information or Recordings and/or the use of the applicant's name, voice, and/or likeness in connection with the Program, or the promotion thereof in all media now known or hereafter devised. Applicants are required to sign Releases to this effect."

PLUS, Lisa got through to the next round! I don't understand why she's complaining about this now when she wasn't kicked off this week and still got to go to Vegas. I'd be slightly sympathetic for her if she had been kicked off based on what some might think to be an editing switcheroo, but that wasn't the case. If you get the boot next week, be glad you got that far and move on.

So what's the deal?????

So what's the other side to this? WHY is she being censored? Don't pull out the violins and tissues just yet, surely there must be a reason for this.

I'm actually pretty surprised that FN has the brains to spice things up like this. Way to go, Tuschelson!

Is there some sort of penalty toward the contestants if they give away the results of the competition? because the way she's been whinging all over the internet, I think it's safe to say that our NFNS will not bear a striking resemblance to a Vulcan. As far as last night--*shrug* neither version struck me as particularly spectacular.

Of course, I don't much like any of the remaining contestants. I thought Shane had a chance and seemed at least borderline watchable, but then he showed he can't work with kids, and ommitted the mortal sin of *gasp* not having traveled to France.

Lisa is showing her teeth and claws like the wolverine she really is!! Garza, dear child, I'm pretty sure that there is no "Big Brother" conspiracy against you. And after the JAG incident of last season, the last thing TFN is looking for is controversy. I agree that the Ray show edited out your freeze-up. You get to go to Vegas. Now kindly be gracious and shut up!!

As for Kelsey, I'm thinking if she wins maybe she could do a show with some costars who share similar qualities with her, you know, like puppets!!!

And finally, Tushie! You have your next FN star!! The Girl Scout who worked with Adam (forgot her name, anyone remember)? She was a natural in front of the camera and just precious! I loved when she did the "waves of zen" gesture when Adam asked her why she wasn't nervous!!! I'd watch her over any of the "adults" any day!

I would guess she is is being "censored" because her defensiveness sort of insinuates that she will not win and The Powers That Be don't want her to give away too much. A winner wouldn't be this defensive, would they?

b/c maybe she knows that shane should not have left because they picked apart his demo too. maybe someone else deserved to go home too. another thing, why did bob criticize kelsey on not being authorative with her brownie? i thought she did the best with the girl scouts. they pick and choose who they want to be shone in good and bad light especially on last nites episode. fn is a bunch of crap these days.

Gee, with her team-player attitude, I'm sure FN is just DYING to let her win so they can produce a show with her! Why wouldn't they want to hire a host who acts like a total nutjob and disparages the network? Excellent winning strategy!

As much as I hate Lisa gArza, the "judges" are just about as bad. Amazing that these pricks and tools run what used to be such a great channel. They are so full of themselves now, that the market is ripe for a FN competitor. Seriously, how could they choose to keep airing Sandara Crap Lee when there is so much better talent out there.

I love the comment made by another "anonymous" above regarding the real winner being the Brownie that worked with Adam. What a natural gift she has! Of all the people on air last night, young and old, she stole the show. Cute..cute..cute!

At 7/07/2008 12:06 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

since FN chooses the winner rather than the public this time around, I have a feeling this is Lisa trying to "sabotage" whoever did win (it would make no sense for her to do this if she actually won the competition) by suggesting that a less-qualified person won it and that it was FN editing that cast Lisa in a bad light and thus made it seem "legitimate" that she in the end did not win.

If that is the case, then I think it's Dallas Diva being a real piece of work, apparently not being able to come to terms with the fact that she lost, and lost to someone who Lisa feels is "less qualified" and perhaps less refined and sophisticated.

But then again, Lisa has always given off this horrid gauche nouveau-riche vibe on this show and in her postings on here, flaunting her expensive clothes, acting like she's just all so much more sophisticated than everyone else, I'd not be surprised if she felt someone "inferior" to her "robbed" her of what she felt she was "entitled" to.

It seems obivous that she will NOT be the Next Food Network Star. If she were the winner, she wouldn't be complaining at every turn.

I tend to agree that Lisa does not become the Next Food Network Star. It is sad, because out of these four, she is the only one I would watch. The Rachael Ray video and what was shown last night do not match up in the least and I don't blame Lisa for getting upset. The other three I will not watch. Go Lisa, it was fun while it lasted.

Lisa isnt my favorite person but I do not blame her for being pissed off at the editing spin.

I wouldn't call that 'bad luck". That is prety naive. These people @ FN are porfessionals and know EXACTLY what they are doing.

Like her or not, that isnt fair to her as a competitor to make her look so much worse than she was. That will definitely effect the voting should she make it till the final 2.

Anonymous stated what thousands ask themselves daily : " Amazing that these pricks and tools run what used to be such a great channel. "

Amen brother. I am not sure at which point the FN started it's denouement, but I can assure you it probably began with the appointment of Tuschman when they hired him from the community cable channel.

A very odd and peculiar "guy".

What voting??? - the decision is made by the FN people alone - there is no public voting for the winner this year (after the vox populi voted for Amy instead of Rory last year, when it was obvious Tuschy & Fogle wanted Rory)

Only thing this time people will vote for is "People's Choice" and right now Kelsey is leading that, with Aaron 2nd & Lisa 3rd IIRC.

I needed to jump in and say that I agree about the pricks and Tools remark. The judges are becoming sadistic almost. They really are getting full of themselves and their little power trip.

in addition to the 3 main judges I thought Mrs Neely seemed awfully snooty to the contestants. WHO THE HELL IS SHE? She got the job the easy way then looks down her nose at them as they are out through hell week. OMG I also think Giada is an ugly person from watching her as a judge. REMEMBER ALL HER EYE ROLLING LAST YEAR? Who do these people think they are???

I think Lisa is a great chef and a very interesting person to watch. She has an interesting and different look. That is always a good thing to peak interest. I do not however think she looks like a very nice person and I do want a nice person to win. AARON for ex.

Remember when Kelsey asked Lisa a food question and Lisa ignored her? Yuck. Not cool. She just seems like a selfish, unlikeable person.

Not only did Lisa NOT fall apart- SHE DID AN AMAZING JOB. I can't believe this. HOW DARE THEY LIE TO THE VIEWERS LIKE THIS????

Lisa I feel for you. You went through hell to do this show and it shouldn't be stacked against you or anyone.

So far we have seen plenty of prickish and toolish behaviour from the "judges".

I made comment that even Bobby Flay seems like a doink this year. I suppose Lord Tuschman has instructed everyone to up the "attitude" to create controversy over the smallest insignificant things.

Now Princess Giada. You have no reason WHATSOEVER to roll your peepers because sweetheart, you ain't that good yourself. I doubt you are even a full blown chef yourself, because Cordon Bleu vacation packages don't necessarily get you that status.

As for Lisa Garza, she did standout and I felt she did a good job. Too bad these egghead "executives" have chosen to single her out this way.

It should be Aaron and Lisa in the final.
That is your Smart Thought of the day.

I agree that this seems to indicate that she got kicked off and is trying to do some damage control for her image or is just angry.

However, if not, then I do not think she is handling this well. More than some silly cooking challenges, I think this is a test of being a food network star. For better or worse, you're going to be dealing with illogical decisions made by studio execs and be picked apart by the general public.

It's great that she has so many fans/family/friends to defend her on these blogs but she has to stop being so defensive about her image if she's going to be on TV. Between this late-night email and sending a letter to this website after just episode one, I don't know if she has thick enough skin. That does not make her a bad person or chef at all; just not a tv celeb.

I could understand her going on the offensive if she's trying to clear up misconceptions because the viewers vote, but we don't. And angering FN execs by calling them Big Brother isn't going to help.

I'm of course against censorship but this was not the correct way to deal with the situation if it did occur.

I don't think she was screwed by their portrayal. This isn't like American Idol where we all get to vote. This may not be the truest portrayal of the RR clip, but it ultimately doesn't affect the judging one bit.

The Judges saw the raw footage from the taping and this was based on that.

At 7/07/2008 5:30 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I watched all the clips today from RR and from FN. Lisa's was the only one that was GROSSLY misrepresented.

She got screwed. I am not her friend, her relative or even rooting for her. (although I may now)

I totally don't blame her for being totally pissed. Think about the fool they made of her and she has to face her clients and F/F.
They made her look inept and stupid AND IN REALITY SHE DID A GREAT JOB.

I realize people don't empathize much these days but c'mon.

Are you sure it really is Lisa who's emailing you and not someone claiming to be her? I'd be careful in assuming this is a real email unless you have a way to verify it.

Second, when you go on reality TV, you are at the mercy of the editors. Everyone knows that. If Lisa has a problem with it (and this is really Lisa) she should not have signed the release form. She walked right into the situation and had better just deal.

I wouldn't have read Article 22 in the way that the show represented Lisa. Sometimes we say or do embarrassing things -- but I don't read in Article 22 that the show is authorized to cut and paste a recording that makes you look like a complete idiot. Thats fraud. Another thing, I think that FN is trying to deflect the fact the Rachel Ray was such a bitch to Kelsey (did you hear the audience reaction when she said - and what are you going to do?). Does FN really think it's viewers are that stupid?

Rule 22 just means she can't successfully SUE them for inaccurate portrayal. It doesn't mean she can't tell people about it.

My comment is sort of on AND somewhat off topic for this post:

I think it's really irritating how people are all up in arms about the supposed decline of Food Network programming. I think the whole point of enjoying food and spending time in the kitchen is that it's fun and you don't have to be an expert at everything. I mean, what did you all have for dinner tonight? Was it CIA caliber? Enjoying food doesn't have to be about creating an exclusive clique of foodies. I think that the FN still has a strong set of hosts that provide entertaining and accessible programming, and I really do think this round of The Next Food Network Star will produce another great host.

And another thing, I really like Lisa and I would like to see her have her own show on the Food Network. I think she's got what it takes to pull off a really stylish and watchable cooking show. And while defending herself over an inaccurate portrayal isn't winning her any friends among the jaded set leaving comments here, I applaud her for defending herself.

At 7/08/2008 9:01 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

People, if you watch the RR clip there is a good portion of just a close-up of Ray's kisser as she warbles some nonsense. This goes on for many seconds and it is clear that the camera cut way from Garza probably because she dummies up and looked awkward.

I am a little concerned that the lady contestant with the Prince Valiant haircut described steak fried in oil as a "healthy protein". For her future reference here is a list of proper healthy proteins:

Chicken Breast -
Turkey -
Fish
Egg Whites-
Low-fat Milk
Nuts
Yogurt
Soy

Finally, someone else who has trust in Lisa that she would be able to pull off her own show.

Also, its not her fault that she had to "steam-roll" over the Girl Scout's opinons. The girl didnt freakin want any food.Lisa was like"You like this, this, this or this?Have you ever has this, this this or this"?And the girl was "no,no,no,no".The opinions of the girl scouts factored on how well the chefs could because the Scouts stupidity could screw up the chefs(if they could even be called chefs).

I don't think an 8-year old child is "stupid" because he or she hasn't had certain foods before. What 8 year old kid do you know has had couscous or herb de cheesy poof or whatever the hell it was Lisa was trying to force the poor kid into agreeing to? Luckily for her, the little girl was willing to try something new (not that she had much choice with Cruella Deville as her chef partner)

Children eat what their parents make, and the general public is not putting couscous on the table. This doesn't make them stupid. That comment, however, makes you look like a moron.

In regards to rule 22:

So, then what is remotely real about reality TV? Is the television audience being manipulated by the editors of what IMO,is a craptacular show? Should a disclaimer be aired before each episode of this show airing the entire rule 22 for all the viewers to read?

I don't blame her for being angry, but it does seem to me that rule 22 or some sort of disclaimer ought to be mentioned before each episode. That would make it perfectly clear to all the viewers, that there is no such thing as reality TV. We don't get to see and hear it all. When only get to see what TPTB want us to see.

Is it just me, or is there an awful lot of crying going on amongst the contestants this season? I don't know if that's the contestants themselves or if FN instructed them to do so in order to "create drama," but it's despicable. It seems like whenever somebody gets some constructive (yet honest) criticism, they turn on the water works. It's like they're begging for sympathy or something. Whenever I see this pathetic display by a contestant, I want them gone. I understand that it's stressful and all, but come on. I'd like to borrow a line from Alton Brown during last year's competition... "Can't we just send them all home and start over?"

I'm gessing the only logical explanation to why TNFNS would edit people, like Lisa blanking out is to focus on what the judges talked about, and that is usually the bad stuff.

Lisa Garza is the only reason why the show is interesting and that's reason enough to hire her. They're lucky they found someone like her who wants to work for them.

I just watched the RR segment...she got screwed. I can completely understand why she is so upset. She performed well and the NFNS editing did NOT reflect that. Keep strong girl...

At 7/12/2008 8:56 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

From the time RR started her stopwatch for the 4 minutes (at :36) to the time she said it was over (at 3:43), only 3 minutes and 7 seconds of the 4 minutes aired. Rachel called "2 minutes left" at 2:30 -- right before Lisa froze. Miraculously, the remaining 2 minutes got finished in 1 minute and 13 seconds ... with only a brief appearance by "Zombie Lisa."

And why WOULDN'T RR's editing team cut out the "zombie Lisa" footage that NFNS decided to show without the average non FN-viewer noticing? Why would they possibly want they're viewers to have to suffer through watching that?

Unless any of us were there for the actual taping we really can't say who was more accurate in their airings. Both were edited to some high degree. Really ... does anyone ACTUALLY expect "reality television" to completely reflect the reality the situation anymore?

OMG, she certainly knows how to whine, doesn't she? It didn't seem to me as if she's being portrayed negatively, but maybe I'm missing something. In fact, I walk away from last night's ep (as y'all can see here) that of the three finalists, she will probably win (due to Tuschie's continued unimpressed-ness with Adam, and the judges' insistence that Aaron melts in front of the camera, and in a bad way). Maybe it's just me, but I don't get it.

I'm just glad that, as not-prominent as my blog is, I probably won't be getting irate comments from Lisa!

i totally agree that this show has become annoying. i didn't know we couldn't vote this year. i really thought that, after all the crap we've had to watch this season (crying, annoying judges, rude, snooty & mean FN "chefs", stupid challenges), that i could at least get SOME satisfaction by casting my vote. oh, well. the "judges" did such a great job last year with the whole Amy/Rory/Jag fiasco, (u know i'm kidding, right?) that i'm sure they thought that the "fans" wouldn't have the sense to pick somebody we'd actually like to see on tv. by the way, amy got the votes last year cause she was the lesser of 2 evils (anyone but me see similarities between rory & lisa?). for me to watch this show next season, a whole lot of things are gonna have to change...new judges, better format, more realistic challenges, better choices of contestants, etc., etc., etc.

Not only do I love Lisa and hope she wins, but am I the only person who realizes that the chance this e-mail is REAL is probably low, and this is probably just BS? Please, it seems to just be to stir up anti-Lisa crazyness.

I do agree, however, that the network is going downhill, big time. Most of the new shows, I can't stand - between that annoying girl hosting Cooking For Real (HOW many times does she have to tell the same story in 30 minutes? She's worse than Rachael Ray), Sandra Lee, and however many shows by Paula Dean, I find myself less inclined to pay for cable - since I only pay for it for this channel anyway.

Ever since the beginning Lisa has made it clear that she's in it for the money and fame. Her point of view early on was pretentious and incoherent. While apparently an excellent chef, it's very apparent that she cooks for the country club/fine dining crowd, while giving off an ice princess vibe that is disconcerting, not unlike Martha Stewart her admitted heroine. Now I like haute cuisine as much as the next person, but the reason I watch Food Network is to get insights on preparing interesting, delicious meals with ingredients that are readily available without going broke in the process. When the ingredients alone cost upwards of $10 a serving I turn the channel. Most households can't budget $100/day for meals. One of the biggest fallacies perpetrated by people like Lisa is that being a great chef entails using extraordinary (expensive) ingredients to create memorable dishes. Aaron's point of view, much like my own, is that it's possible to make ordinary, readily available ingredients look and taste extraordinary. That's what making food accessible is all about.
