The Next Food Network Star, Week 6

Cook the food, yo!

Well, I guess you can go join Amy Finley in France, Shane.

I originally thought Adam would be the one to go this week, but I think the judges made the right choice after seeing each of the finalists' demos on Rachael Ray.

But what did you think?

i thought it was total bs. first of all shane has been cooking actually well during the challenges. adam has been undercooking food and really should have not stayed around for another week. then shane doesnt do as well in one challenge even though his food is still excellent and he gets kicked off while adam goes to vegas. hats off to aaron btw. out of the bottom three i thought lisa should have gone she shut down completely in front of rr. they made the wrong choice im sorrry

I have to agree with the above posting. Lisa was simply awful. Her performance was awful and her food was boring. I was really surprised when she was allowed to move on. At least Shane's food looks tasty and in this case was totally kid friendly with the puffed rice cereal coating. Very creative. Somehow I think we'll hear from Shane again. His career has only just begun. I also agree that Aaron did well, in general. I now think he is emerging as the one to beat. Lisa should have been eliminated. Of that I am sure.

I actually agreed with the judges this time. Although he seems like one of the most knowledgeable food-wise, I just don't enjoy watching him. I don't think Lisa will make it past next week - I'm feeling an Aaron and Kelsey finale.

Well, Bob Tuschman, that flushing sound you're hearing is the Food Network going down the toilet ... total joke. This week, we lost Shane who despite not having rapport with a shy kid can still cook and demo his product. I had to laugh that Tuschman dinged him for calling the breading technique "standard" when anyone who's watched Food Network for more than 5 minutes would know that it is in fact standard. Lisa's deer in the headlights deal was a disaster today, and truth be told, I wouldn't care to watch any of the final four for even five minutes. We've got another set of "Hardy Boys" here, and maybe it's time FN looked at some better way to find it's next star. Aside from Guy Fieri, this hasn't been successful. And this season is no exception. Idiots. I have lost total respect for Bobby Flay and I think he should seriously distance himself from this joke of a program.

I was expecting the committee to be pimping Shane this week but was sadly mistaken. If they want someone to reek of genuine authority, he didn't have it, while Aaron did -- finally! Shane seems to know his food but he showed us his limitations.

Bobby Flay told Kelsey a couple of weeks ago that he saw she had a lot of talent, and with the right producer she could do well, and they let her stay. I think the same thinking was applied to Lisa tonight -- she has a lot of talent and expertise, but needs some producing and directing. But overall, I think that Aaron has the most natural talent and when he's on--cooking good food and showing us who he is-- he on! I honestly think he could be their next FN star.

Yes, gourmet_booke, maybe Aaron could win the show. But I go back to what I said before, do you think he could actually be a star? I think this idea for finding the star has run its course and not really provided anyone decent except Guy. Maybe that's worth it to them, but meantime, the judging panel is showing they have no clue whatsoever. Maybe we should have a show called "The Next Food Network Executive."

I knew Shane was screwed the moment I heard "French cooking" in his culinary POV. Wasn't that the POV of last season's winner, little miss snooty French girl? And didn't it fail miserably? Yeah, that was the LAST thing FogelTusch wanted to hear from these contestants. Poor Shane. He should have gone in with another angle. But he's young - other opportunities will come along.

Did anyone see the actual Rachael Ray program this week? Adam opened the door by being the first contestant - they switched the order tonight - asking if she could help with his demo, and RR said, "Well, they didn't tell me I couldn't help." From then on, she jumped in on every other person's demo, invited or not. They made it seem like she was "helping out" when they showed the clips tonight, but I was so annoyed with how she managed to monopolize so much of each contestants' 4-minute demo. No wonder Lisa shut down - she saw what RR did to the previous contestants.

I'm actually really glade that Shane left. I think he was so annoying, and had absolutely no personality. I love Adam, he's fun to watch, and so is Lisa, so I'm glad they were both safe. Shane, however, I didn't care for through any of the show.

Rachael Ray is a nut job <3

i watched the rachel ray episode of this NFNS episode, and lisa looked great on RR, so it seems quite obvious that this was totally edited for drama, BIG SURPRISE. it seems like they know who they want and theyre just getting rid of everyone else

Watch the REAL segments, not at all what we saw tonight

Thanks for the link, anon. You're right, Lisa's segment was great when you watch the unedited version. No question about it, editing for drama is what TNFNS is going for. Makes you wonder what has really been going on in the previous weeks. Lisa may actually be more likeable than we have been ledt believe. Right now I'm rooting for a Lisa/Aaron showdown.

According to the FN poll, Kelsey, Aaron followed by Lisa in that order. Lisa is not watchable or likeable..seems to talk down to others. Lisa did not connect with her Brownie tonight. Spock girl needs to go home, I am tired of the crying.

Tuschman apparently does not like Kelsey at all. He nitpicks constantly. This week, Kelsey didn't do enough cooking. But it was ok when Adam, Lisa and Shane let Rachael cook.

FINALLY, Aaron let his personality come out. It was great watching him and he connected with his Brownie.

Aaron's going to win. Not to be a cynic, but they're in season 4, and they need a minority winner.

If Lisa stops by this week, can she leave bob-styling tips? I can't get mine to be symmetrical without getting poofy, and am intrigued by her giant roller techniques.

Way to go Aaron!!! It was good seeing Aaron come out of his shell and relax a little. I'd totally watch his show. Garza is a piece of work, however. She badgered that poor little Brownie into agreeing she liked steak tar tar or whatever with horseradish sauce?? Name me one kid who likes horseradish?!!?!? then she brags how her 11 year old kid has a very distinguished pallet!! does he really, Garza, or is he just afraid to voice his opinion because he knows you'll go ball-busting ape-sh*t on him if he doesn't agree with you??? Personally, I'd love to see Garza at the finally just to watch her loose and have a melt down ala last season's Rory Shepesi.

Some notes:
- I was just reminiscing about the Hardy Boys last night and how much I liked their show, so WATCH IT!

- Thank you to whoever posted about the real segments on Rachael Ray. I know some editing has to be done to add drama, but it's nice to see the unedited segments.

- Is it just me or is Tushman getting more bitchy/vicious with the contestants each week? I mean, I loved the "I just got done with flight school and I think I can fly this plane" analogy last week, but the whole "YOU NEVER LIVED IN FRANCE YOU WORTHLESS MAGGOT! HOW CAN YOU POSSIBLY UNDERSTAND THE FRENCH!" comments seemed a bit personal. Anyone?

- Adam is still on the show. Seriously?

Lisa saying that she was more intimidated by RR than Martha Stewart spoke volumes.

Shane had the worst performance last night...therefore he had to go.

I'm liking Aaron's chances.

I think putting them on RR show was probably the worst mistake Foodnetwork could have done. Rachael (if you watch her) she never lets anyone talk. It's all about her. She buts in on everyone. How she won an award is beyond my thinking.

Phillip - I completely agree about Tuschie Toes. Total diva!

This episode was totally edited to portray Lisa in a bad light and Adam in a good light. I actually thought Lisa did well in her demo (despite what the judges thought in the actual episode). On the other hand no one in the audience laughed at Adam's joke, at least on Rachael Ray, and NFNS tacked on some canned laughter to make his bad joke sound good. I'm with everyone who thinks that Adam should go--if he stays and if the American public that watches this show is crazy enough to vote him as the winner, he's just going to become the next Guy Fieri--annoying with questionable cooking ability.

Oh, and to jordanbaker:

Aaron's going to win. Not to be a cynic, but they're in season 4, and they need a minority winner.

The winner is decided by audience vote, and the last time we had a minority contestant in the final (Reggie S.), he lost to Guy Fieri. So Aaron could still lose if he gets to the final two.

hearts: actually the winner this year is NOT voted on by the public. See my interview with Bob Tuschman for more info.

The winner's show will premiere the week following the finale, so it's long been decided.

Lisa Garza sucks, and she completely bullied and steamrolled that poor kid. Oh you like to eat crap huh? Oh ok, well let me make crap for you, and you WILL LIKE IT KID. Basically how she acted. She was a biatch to little toy girl as well, then at the end, she told the boys to STFU while she pouted at the end. Where did those stupid lips and squinty eyes go?

I also agreed with the judges. The remaining people are very talented and they are going to have to start cutting talented people. It's tough.

I think I found out who I am rooting for. It's Aaron. I LITERALLY CRIED WHEN HE DID SO WELL ON RACHEL RAY. I am VERY sure his nerves will settle down the more time he spends in front of a camera and without all the pressure of this contest. That alone would rattle anyone.

Aaron is a great chef and a very likeable guy. I really hope he wins.

My second choice is Adam because I think he is a natural in front of the camera. I haven't tasted his food but assume if he made it this far he can cook.

Anyway my heart is with Aaron.

PS R U Kidding saying the FN is a loser over this show??? The show alone is riveting and garners a huge audience let alone an occaisional Guy Fierri coming along.

FN is BRILLIANT running this annual competition with or w/o a major star breaking out. They have plenty of shows already!

I thought Shane was the only caring professional in that line up.
Aaron is disgustingly low-class, and cheapens an already bad show.

At 7/07/2008 4:19 PM , Blogger Wine Dine Whine said...

wow, anon, what a ballsy comment - what makes you think FN doesn't want someone "low-class"? Last I checked, the majority of this country falls under low/middle class. Divas making foods you can't even pronounce are unattainable and unwatchable.

On the flip, I'm super sad that Shane is gone. I loved watching the kid, and even more so because he was so young and yet so good at what he does. Still unsure how Adam lived to see another week. So now my rooting switches back to Aaron, who rocked it out on RR. Woo woo!

I'm waiting to see Lisa's Diva Fit when she gets the boot (as I metioned in the other thread, I think her emails and wacky behavior pretty much prove she doesn't/didn't win), but I don't really plan to watch after that. I CERTAINLY don't intend to watch the obligatory 6 episodes of (insert winner's name)'s Generic Forgettable Sunday Morning Cooking Show.

Awwww, how cute was Rachel in this episode? She was so nice to everyone and so perky and lively!I almost forgot about why i loved her so much. She and Shane really bonded well, when he sayed EVOO and and how he was a cook and getting your hands dirty.I also liked when he added "with parental supervision,of corse".He even talked bout Pixar, like Rachel did in one episode of RR.But,i have to agree with Tushie about how Shane ignored the Girl Scout.

Hahahahaha twords Aarons Girl Scout!!That fat little girl was like"i want chocolate cake".I liked Aarons response "We arent having that" while hes lauphing. After they made that pizza the girl was like "screw you guys" and grabbed the pizza and ran away.I think she needs to be in the Yum-o program for a couple of months and shed a few pounds.

I still think Adam should have been the one to go home owing to his performance on past episodes, performance personality aside. It just doesn't seem smart to keep the guy who can't cook!

I would have also been all right with Lisa leaving; I'm still honestly not sure why she's been given so many chances, because she's painful to watch and frankly she frightens me a bit, with the hoity-toity wardrobe ("oh noes, I ruined a $300 shirt!" - who wears a $300 shirt on a show like this?!) and the freaky eyebrows. And her food so far has not appealed to me at all. I like fancy food from time to time, sure, but quick n' dirty's good too!

The thing that stood out to me most on this episode, though, was the selection committee's responses to Kelsey calling Rachel Ray "Rach". Was it just me, or did Bobby Flay look a bit like he'd been given holy hell over a slip like that once? I'd love to hear the story behind that :)

I agree completely with Pat, on everything she wrote.

I thought Shane was probably the best pure cook of the group - the only one, for example, who would have had the slightest chance on Top Chef - but not the most expressive personality, which is the second half of the equation considering that the show is, obviously, looking for a STAR. I'm sure he'll go one and be a very good cook somewhere.

At 7/11/2008 10:22 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I thought the decision was pure BS! Seriously, Shane was the only decent cook on that show. I swear, if I hear Lisa called cooked green beans by her fancy French name one more time, I will SCREAM!! I am just waiting for her to bust out her Dolce & Gabanna apron before I hurl my Manolos through the tv screen!

What a freaking joke!! There is no one left to pull for on the show. Unless you want to pull for Kelsey who has the same personality as Elmo!

Lisa should not be allowed near sharp knives. Actually, someone please ban her from ALL knives. She needs to make some serious cuts in her caffeine consumption, and soon. I think Adam should win. He hasn't gotten AS emotional as Lisa or Aaron. They're supposed to win a FOOD show, right? Lisa cried over meeting Martha Stewart. I laughed so hard. I would not watch a show hosted by a person who thought Martha Stewart was some sort of role model. I was hoping Adam would make some jailhouse rock lobster sauce or something to commemorate Martha appearing on the show. Everyone is WAAAAAAAAAAAAY too serious about this. The lesser of three emotionals would be Adam and some of his recipes actually sound really good. Go ADAM! Oh, and I also made the spock ears comment to my husband. This show is a HOOT!

The judges fixed the outcome of this show so that they could pick Aaron. Let’s be honest, he blew it in Vegas and in all fairness should have been eliminated that very show. However, the judges decided to do something that they never did before, which was to keep all three contestants. They did this ultimately so that they could pick Aaron in the end. Instead of smelling the aroma of food, I smell foul play!
