A Thought on Adam Gertler's Pilot Idea

I thought Adam Gertler's show pilot was just all right. It's very strange seeing someone else up there on Rachael's set; I kept waiting for Rachael to come out and scurry them along. It actually made it harder for me to take any of them seriously...

Especially when this idea of a male host teaching a perky, culinarily distraught woman some cooking tips is seen as inventive... even when the woman is coming in via iChat and not just sitting nearby on a stool.

For the controversy-inclined readers out there, I think you can rest easy knowing that Food Network probably didn't "steal" Adam's idea only to go on and produce the soon-to-premiere Ask Aida.

Food Network may be a bit behind the times when it comes to technology, but I'm fairly certain they were aware of computers and chatting online for a while now. For all we know, producers approached Adam with the idea to incorporate the Internet into his pilot.

I'm always up for a scandal, but I think this one is just plain bunk.

his pilot was very rescue chef meets food 911 with a tech twist. ask aida doesn't look that appealing, but there ain't much on FN that I don't watch.

i may have missed something, but didn't Adam come up with the internet idea right before he talked to the producer guy? i don't remember him mentioning it earlier or making a push for it as his gimmick. that makes me think he just came up with it on the spot, without FN's prior knowledge.

I'm not buying your explanation - it was pretty weak with no facts to back it up. Aida's show is just enough left of Adam's to give FN some teeth to the legal defense they should be preparing for. I would SO love to watch Adam's show, with the computer monitor on the kitchen counter, interactive and including home cooks, kinda like Danny but not with the expense of producing an off-site show. I'd really like to see when FN started Aida production vs. when Adam did his pilot. It would make interesting REALITY TV.

I meant to say really interesting COURT TV.

Anyone check out the new series Food Detective? I liked it the first time I saw it when it was called GOOD EATS! Alton got screwed.

I can say with confidence that this is probably not the case. I work at a culinary school, and I received a call last January looking for a younger female instructor that would be a candidate to host a new show they were developing that would allow viewers to interact with the host and ask questions, etc. Not sure when NFNS taped, but I doubt they had it wrapped and had stolen Adam's idea by January.

All of this is kind of stupid; you don't "own" ideas -- that's why every network can have their own ripoff of "America's Funniest Home Videos." Even if the "idea" was 100% Adam's, it doesn't matter.

In any event, anyone stupid enough to ask *Adam* for cooking advice deserves what happens to them.

Aw I miss How to Boil Water...

Yeah, I watched Food Di(k!
They totally ripped off Good Eats! Maybe they're cancelling that show, too? FN likes to show crap and cancel the good shows!

It was difficult to watch the Good Eats 2.0 reincarnate.
How to Boil Water was original (in 1990's)

I guess we all have to remember FN is part of the Scripps organization which is nothing original we all remember when GE owned everything too.

Just chill folks, GOOD EATS isn't going anywhere. It just moved to the 8 o'clock hour bumping long time Emeril Live. If you bother to watch, Food Detective is about food myths, Good Eats is all about food knowledge. Definitely not the same show but with similar funky styles.

You're right, sort of. GE will be around for another couple of years, but Alton has done several "food myth" bits, and GE is ALL about the science of cooking.

Ditto. The idea wasn't original. Adam's show was a watered down version of Food 911 and the Rescue Chef.

Actually, my first thought was that it was an updated version of the show where viewers called in to talk to Sara Moulton live. (I actually kind of miss that show.) Funny, it never dawned on me, but my husband, who was only half-watching the TV the other day, said "hm, wasn't that that guy's idea?" (meaning Adam) when an Ask Aida promo came on.

Adam's pilot was cool but that woman annoyed the hell out of me.

Did that IChat lady have a script or was she asking succested questions from a sheet?Adam seemed to not know what she was going to say.And here I always thought that episodes of Take home chef and Rescue Chef was a sort of play.

LOVE you Adam. YOU and Aaron were deserving of being in the final round!
I'm all for you.
