Alton Brown New Face of Welch's, Can't Compete with Cute Kids

Cuteness only gets you so far in life. Sorry Welch's kiddies, you're fired!

Guess who's taking over?

Alton Brown is the new face of Welch's grape juice and its 100% Grape Juice ad campaign.

Remember when these were running:

Well, no more!

"We talk a lot about the importance of knowing where your food comes from and with Welch's it's easy because the people who grow the grapes actually own the company," said Alton.

Where you'll see Alton's cute little face:
"Airing from November 2008 to March 2009, the television advertisement will run on cable and network shows including Dancing with the Stars, Rachael Rays' 30 Minute Meals and family and movie specials on the ABC family channel. The new print campaign will appear in magazines such as People, Parenting, Women's Health and Cooking Light, as well as online at WebMD and the FoodNetwork.com."

*************

So whaddya think? With the cute kids gone and Alton in, will you be buying more grape juice?

If Welch's is American owned & made then I would definitely buy it whether it's Alton Brown or kids in the ads. I think we do need to know where our food comes from, now more than ever. We need to support the companies that employ our own citizens.

Much better than Paula Deen and her nasty Smithfield promotion ... Y'ALL...

I have a totally unrelated comment and wasn't sure where to leave it.
I know this might be blasphemy on this website, but did you watch Top Chef last night? The guy that was eliminated, Patrick, bore a striking resemblance to The Food Network Addict! Is he your long-lost brother?

I actually saw one of the commercials the other night during Dancing with the Stars.... I'm NOT liking his hair lately, but did enjoy seeing a FN face!

I saw this commercial yesterday for the first time and actually took time to REWIND because I couldn't be sure that was my beloved Alton. Grape juice commercials, yadda yadda yadda, but what's with that HAIR? I am so not enjoying his new style. Yikes.

Not blasphemy at all. I watch Top Chef.

And yes, Patrick and I do look a bit similar:-) Not a brother, though... at least as far as I know.

****

Does Alton even have much hair left to play around with?

I've been seeing this commercial a lot on the Style network. And my first thought was "WTF with the hair Alton?" He is totally my Food Network favorite, but that hair has got to go.

Alton is way cuter than the kids ;)

Alton's rockin' a Ruhlman vibe with the new hair! It took me a while, but I kind of like the new look. Jacob's right--AB doesn't have much left to keep up the spiky 80s 'do. =8D

I saw the TV ad during "Chuck." As I was fast-forwarding through the commercials, my son yells out "HEY, that was Alton Brown." I didn't believe him, but he was right. I don't mind the hair. Hairstyles come and go, hair goes, and change is good. If Alton had had facial hair, I might have been taken aback. But I thought he looked mighty fine, as always.

OMG THE HAIR!! NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!

Alton Brown will be a great pitchman . For Welch's and many others I am sure.

The guy is the most credible personality on FN.

As for the hair, I haven't seen it yet, but I would not be surprised to see him take it right down to the wood.
Some men have difficulty dealing with pattern baldness. Alton will figure it out.

Jacob,

Did FN Bob T leave his blog because the people that wrote in are crazy/sex/profane jerks that did not take the blog worth its salt and not the foodies he thought would be interested in a dialague. You can be blunt!

Alton's new hair is much classier than the old.

Speaking of Top Chef, what's the deal with eliminating two people on the first show? One Quickfire and someone's gone? Man, that's cold.

Not so sure about the commercial thing (though I guess we all have mortgages to pay), but I guess it was OK. The hair's left me a little stunned, I'm not sure about the high-forehead/long in the back combo, but it beats the combover he was sporting on the last few ICAs (those just look inherently sad). I'm of the mind he needs to take a deep breath, grab the electric trimmer and pull a Patrick Stewart--he'd make a cute cueball.

I love Alton, but that hair has me thinking about WKRP in Cincinnati...what was that guy's name?

As for Top Chef Sarah, anyone who would make a salad for a quickfire...a green salad with nuts and apples...deserves to go home. Have some creativity for God's sake! Don't you think?

Commercial was good. AB was great. The hair is different to say the least. I wonder if that will be just for the commercials or will carry over to other AB projects.

It was Lauren who was eliminated from Top Chef for the salad, wasn't it? Just think, she didn't even actually cook anything, and poof! - gone.

Anon 11:10, are you thinking of Howard Hessman's character Johnny Fever?? Or maybe program manager Andy played by Gary Sandy?

(Is it sad that I've committed brain cells to remembering this stuff?)

I would like to thank you so much for this post as well as your blog. Your blog is one of my favorite daily sites to visit. It is interesting to see how Food Network personalities are becoming spokespeople for so many food companies. It is great to see how advertising is taking to the popularity of food television. Already we have seen Paula Deen as the face of Smithfield Foods. You stated, “With the cute kids gone and Alton in, will you buy more grape juice?” This is an interesting question especially when looking at advertising recently. Alton Brown is respected and expected to know all things scientific. When thinking about Welch’s, I always tend to think of the cute little kids.

Do you think by making this change, it might take away the nostalgia of the grape juice? Will this be a positive choice in advertising for this company? I feel like it is a huge possibly that by choosing Alton, such an exciting Food Network personality, the grape juice may be put on the back burner. The association to watch Alton’s shows may take precedent over buying the grape juice. I feel that this is a huge step forward for food entertainment and am very excited about it. I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter, of course in your very fun and light way. You seem to understand what the personalities are doing and the direction in which they are headed.

First of all, I love Alton, he's the only FN star that seems genuine other than Tyler Florence. If you ever meet Alton in person, he's even more intelligent, handsome, and witty than he is on TV. I love the fact that Alton breaks down foods to educate us about them, and the science of foods help us understand why things happen with them during the cooking process. Alton has always preferred the freshest and most natural ways of cooking foods if at all possible, and he also advocates buying locally.

That being said, I can't stand the new hairdo, he's way too hot to look like a hippy.

@ Anonymous 2:43 PM That is TOOOOO funny. He DOES look like Dr Johnny Fever now. I've been trying to put my finger on it. That's it! But, its not working, time for a haircut AB, the long hair makes you look more bald.

It's grape juice! Welchs I have always bought your product regardless. But I am sooooooooooo bored with this Alton Brown's science guy and his boring monotone voice. I don't know Alton Brown and have never seen him on Food Network so I cannot say much more. All I am saying is the ad campaign it needs to end. Soon. It's not funny, it's not catching, it's like c'mon I want this commercial over.

thank you for having this post because I just needed to get this out! I am tired of yelling at my computer screen waiting for him to go off while I wait to watch my show!

Has anyone noticed the lesion on the left side of his face? I noticed it during a ad last night while watching SuperBowl commercials online. In addition to the shaggy hair and unkempt look lately, it makes me concerned for his health.
