Ina Brings 'Back to Basics' to Borders

Ina Garten is the latest guest on Borders Kitchen, a web show I didn't even know about until now... but I'm glad I found it! She demonstrates four recipes from her new book Back to Basics plus talks about how she finds inspiration, tips for keeping things simple, how she cooks for Jeffrey, and even shows off her gorgeous barn kitchen (with a few new views that you don't normally get to see on Barefoot Contessa).

While I love the look and style of Barefoot Contessa, it's great to see Ina without the background music and quick camera movements every once in a while. She's a great teacher and you can really tell she's tested and tested and tested these recipes until she got them right.

And even though you can't embed the videos, I like what Borders did with the format of these webisodes. Each chapter is listed out on the side and loads quickly, and the whole episode can be downloaded. Yay for technology!

[Thanks to Phil for sending me the info!]

Tested and tested? It's not rocket science or brain surgery. LOL....

Ina should team up with Weight Watchers and do a series of healthy cooking and recipes. Get off the glutton train.

I was rather grossed out by Barefoot Contessa episode this past Saturday- it was about chicken.... she used a wooden cutting board for her raw chicken- put her chicken hands in her salt and pepper and then rinsed her hands under water - NO SOAP! EWWWWWWWW!!!!
And her husband is creepy....
DId anyone else notice her cross contam with the chickey ??

I got this book in the mail last week..lovely!

I just finished searching Giada's fig crostini recipe on FN. They have taken the recipe down in favor of the snipet of her cooking it on the show..BUT they removed the exact measurements entirely! The recipe isn't written out anywhere I can find! What ass baboon approved the site revamps there????

Have a lovely Monday :D

I love your blog! Thanks for the link. Ina never disappoints. Please add more Giada and Ina links to your site.;) I love the Food Network and feel deprived as I live in Europe. Looks like Giada's new show is getting mixed reviews. Too bad. Hopefully it will improve with future episodes.

I watched the show and it was great. I am getting used to the new clips they add in it.
As for using a wooden cutting board for the chicken as someone commented as long as they are sanitized it doesn't matter and if you use the same one for poultry like I do maybe she does that as well. You don't have to use the plastic cutting boards like they advertise for you to buy for the different meats and veggies its called them wanting to make money.
As long as they are all clean use which you want.
I have read a few times people think he is creepy I don't think he is at all, I see it as a man that is very in love with his wife and shows affection towards here that is something we don't see all that often so people say its creepy.

Ina's husband Jeffrey creepy ? You're on drugs Anon 3.04 am.

The guy is solid as they come. You don't get to where the Garten's are by being creepy.
Now some of the other FN husbands on the other hand are real creepy.

Groover, Cusimano, Todd Thompson. Let's climb onboard our wive's gravy train creepy. Grooover is definitely captain of this club.

------

That would be the Gartens, not the Garten's (sic)... and I guess you haven't been around many successful people because I have and many of them are creepy, weird and sometimes downright scary. But they're also talented and that's all that matters.

Like Jenna, the new FN site is screwy. Does anyone else find it to be a jumbled unuser friendly mess like me?

I haven't really been on the FN site that much lately because ever since they changed it , it takes forever to load the pages I am looking for.

Deen's husband Michael Groover is definitely CREEPY ! He needs an eyelid job in the worst way ...

I agree about the FN website--very user unfriendly--I can't find anything on it. I've stopped using it. If I'm looking for a recipe I google it and it takes me to the recipe on the FN.

I miss the old website.

I watched the chicken episode on Saturday, and I noticed that she didn't seem to use soap on her hands, but the camera cut between her at the counter and her at the sink - she could have soaped up and washed and they cut it out. They often cut out things like that to make the episode fit in the time allotted. (Wooden cutting boards are fine for chicken, as long as they're washed well.)

What I noticed about that episode was the recipe for chicken stock. Three whole chickens! I make my own stock, but using three whole chicken for a few quarts of stock just seems like overkill. (Not to mention pricey!)

Jscob, thanks for posting this, I really enjoyed watching. Ina seemed so relaxed and comfortable, and I can't wait to make the fish and pudding.

Wasn't the interviewer the one who used to have a FN show about cooking with wine?

And, yes, the new FN website is horrific.

LOL- The food network stars spouses should remain off camera at all times. CREEPY like Anon 3:04 - I have found most of them to be creepy too- Ina's being one the creepiest- followed by John Cusimano- what the hell is up with him? Did he forget to shower and shave? He looks homeless and Rach deserves a hottie with class and style- like Colby Donaldson perhaps..... hmmm-Yum-O.... GO FOR IT, RACH!!!

Frankly, I think filming any FN host wash and drying their hands is a waste of film and for those that actually wait for this portion of programming, well.. get a life for Chrissakes.

Who gives a shit if Ina didn't use soap?

Is it Ina Garten's responsibilty to do PSA's about the hazards of slimey chicken boards. I don't fuckin think so.

Do we now have to rate FN shows so rookies know what programming is suitable. " This show contain material that some chefs may find so basic that only lugan begginner cooks will comprehend" or "This show is intended for mature culinary audiences. It contains scenes of advanced knife techniques and requires above average culinary comprehension.Viewer discretion advised.

She didn't use soap. Bite me.

Sounds like Borat has a serious thing for the chunky Garten.... Maybe her creepy hubbie will watch....

THANK YOU, Borat! I love when people use rationale like yours---i'm watching this cooking show b/c i want to see what ingredients she uses & what to make. I appreciate tips, but unless you're a novice to the world, most cooks know to wash their hands after handling raw meats --why waste time showing this? Is everybody equally up in arms about how many times the Iron Chefs touch plated food without using gloves??

thanks for the vid, jacob! loves me some Ina. (& Jeffrey creepy? i was watchin ths show with my BF on Sat---the 1st thing he said was, see how HAPPY they are? that's b/c they don't have children!!) Preaching to the choir, BTW. Ina rocks!

Thanks Jacob, love the link and the introduction to the new site.

Creepy? Jeffrey? Geez, Jeffrey is the perfect husband... Gone during the week, home on the weekends and loves to eat Ina's food. He is attentive and supportive and matches up well with Ina.

I also dislike the new FN website. I pretty much ignore it anymore. Why did they "fix "something that wasn't broken?

Ina's roast chickens never seem to be fully cooked to me...

I think you still see this incessant hand washing as FN hopes to attract new viewers from all over and many of these newbies don't know how to operate a stove let alone debone a chicken breast.

The new web site is so BAD!!!! I wanted to make something from Bobby Flay and it took me 10 minutes to find it. It is such a MESS.

Martha always contaminates and is up front about it. I agree with Emeril. Screw the poultry police right up there with cooking pork thoroughly. It's all hogwash. And I want ny burger rare you crappy restaurants that won't cook it that way anymore.....

It's hard keeping up with Ina if you don't have her funds, LOL...we made the chicken bouillabase (sp?) from her recent show and the Pomegranite Cosmos from her new book and it was like $70 for the ingredients. Pernod for the chix and cointreau for the drink that was like $40 right there. And that's with having most of the ingredients on hand. Granted they did come out great. I'm not that crazy about her new book either. She had a huge turn out though for her KOP signing about a week ago though. She is making bank.

I made the scallops gratin from last weeks show and it was great. I skipped the 2 tablespoons of Pernod though. My store didn't even have it. Shows you where I live.
