Amuse-Bouche: Bobby Flay's Voice Not Sexy?

*****

I'm glad Sunny's back with these little "viewing party" videos, but unfortunately the show itself, Ultimate Recipe Showdown, is still just not good. I'm pissed that Marc Summers is gone (even though that was mostly due to Double Dare nostalgia) and still find the various rounds and scoring very confusing. Did you watch?

Huh?
Did someone hijack your blog? This doesn't feel "Jacoby" at all.

I watched URS and realized that on my last trip to Friday's (sorry, I've got kids and it's near our house), I actually ATE the winner's mac 'n' cheese (it's good - especially for Friday's). So it's been on the menu for awhile now without any mention of URS...weird?

I won't watch anything with Guy F.

I started to watch URS. I just can't stand listening to Guy Fi-etti's voice - too freaking grating, annoying, etc. So I turned it off.

I just about lose it lately when I go into an FN website page and forget to pause the video immediately and I have to hear his voice blasting out at me. It gives me a headache!

The show sounds like something I'd like to watch, but just like DDD, I can't.

I think if Guy was hosting the Oscars and my first born son was up for Best Actor, Director, and Screenplay...I'd have to tune into TBS for the Andy Griffith marathon and have the boy give me a shout when it was over.

We lost a recipe in the new format, last time we got 9 dishes. Now we get 8 and only 4 cooks. It' not really an ultimate recipe showdown with this format. Ad in the judges get to watch the prep, so let's add in some bias about the cooks.

My recent personal voyage into making mac and cheese was for my brother using and Emeril recipe maybe I could have gone on the show with my version.

I live on pastas and cheeses since I can swallow them.

TGIF added chicken, what a drag, I HATE CHICKEN.

The pastrami looked oh so good.

I am going to watch the show again cause "Tru Blood" is in hiatus.

I was at the taping of the finals - I missed it last night will it replay? I really want to taste what we saw win in the finals.

I tried to watch URS, both when it came on before and last night. I'd like to see shows about home cooks on FN, but I found URS unwatchable. The problem for me wasn't Guy Fieri (or at least, not just GF). It was that the program was so slow, and so focused on the contestant's personal lives and not on the food. They kept cutting away from cooking to chit-chat about the contestant's families. Not to mention, the food was not that original. Yeah, cheese and bacon taste good, but I've seen mac and cheese 1000 times. But if you must show mac and cheese, show me how it's made, why it's different, etc.

I actually liked URS without Marc Summers a whole lot better. Guy was not nearly as annoying, imo. I really like the idea of the show and loved a lot of the dishes and folks last night, but Hate the way they find the winner. It is a ridiculous and confusing scoring system. I need to find that recipe for the Mac and Cheese, it looked yummy.

I try to like Sunny and her show, but just can't seem to do it. I think that my biggest problem is that her clothes don't fit. She needs a stylist or a new one. She is a cute girl and has interesting stories, and the food is mostly things I would eat or attempt to make. I will continue to try and watch.

Happy New Year...

J

p.s. Jacob, anything on the horizon for you for 2009 and any of the FN chefs?

URS still sucks. With or without Marc Summers, it sucks. The concept doesn't flow, the program doesn't flow, and there's too much Judge's Comments editing. And by the way, where did they find that Pastrami Twit? She was embarassingly goo-goo-eyed about the Dude Judge. And her "I've just got to got to Culinary School crap?" Please, please tell me this isn't the contestant the Jacob was hinting will show up on New Fodd Network Star.Gaaaaaahhhhhh.

Jean, reruns are on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday.

I'm stoked that the viewing party included a "FN superfan." haha. Thought that was cute.

LOL, yes I watched, and yes I was entertained. Didn't learn anything I didn't know already, but I don't think that's the point. It's totally cool for home cooks to get on a cable tv show, so - yay Fieri, yay TGIF, yay FN.

Don't care for Marc Summers, so he wasn't missed. As for Fieri, I really dig Big Bite. DDD is cool that it promotes indie restaurants, but the editing in that show gives me eye strain. Off the Hook is just too much over-the-top energy. I'm exhausted by the end of it. And yeah, his voice is getting scratchy - didn't used to be that way. I would never wish a burst vocal chord on anyone. Hope that's not what's happening. Guy needs to lay off the fat spliffs.

His performance on URS? Forgettable. I mean, you coulda had anyone in there doing his job, and they'd have done it just as well. Diana just about did that, didn't she?!?

URS in general? Yeah - scoring system is way weird. Totally didn't like the fact that a 30-minute sandwich even had a *chance* to beat out a 90-minute signature mac n cheese dish. whassup w/ that?

As for the contestant background stories, I think it was a good idea. Builds drama, and audience develops emotional investment in who wins. I totally get that. Remember, the majority of viewers are not chefs, and could give a rat's ass about *how* it's made or *how* it's different. They care about the ppl.

You wanna watch a cooking show, watch a cooking show. This is entertainment by way of competition.

Flay's voice is nothing, compared to his grotesque fingernails.

The pastrami looked so good that I went out and bought it which is a product I never buy. I added caramelized onions. It was good.

I like Guy and DDD.

I do not like Sunny on any show.

TGIF sucks. Overpriced crappy food.

It's not "Flay" it's "Fway."

I'm Bobby Fway and I sound like Barbara Wa-Wa.

Remember when Bobby Fway did that show where he stood in a park and grilled next to that hick in the engineer cap? God that was just embarrassing.

I'm on hick burn-out, Food Network. It's like they think the more stupid and grotesque their hosts are, the more we'll be able to relate to them. Nice.

Grillin' and Chillin'. I liked that show. The charcoal vs the gas. I can't help it. I've always liked Flamin' Flay. I don't know why. I also liked that other show in the apt with the meat guy, the fish guy, and the wine guy and that girl Jackie Malouf.

Bobby Flay, after all these years, have finally grown on me. He's not that obnoxious, arrogant, cocky guy from Grillin' and Chillin'. His confidence has matured, finally. I actually like him. And he's very talented.

Flay ,Fway whatever you want to call him certainly has come along way since his duet with Jack McDavid. I think he should remember how brutal he was then and how critical and eye rolling he becomes when judging on Air Tushwipe's TNFNS.

Does anyone know what happened to Jackie Malouf ? Did Bobby take the boots to her ? She knew Lawrence (wine guy & Flay business partner) from Montreal.

Jacqui Malouf: she survived Bobby Fway's superior, sexist attitude and went on with her life. Good for her.
