Big Daddy Strikes Again

Well, season 2 of Aaron McCargo Jr's show Big Daddy's House premiered this past Sunday on Food Network. Despite a formidable advertising campaign including the reairing of season 1 and a barrage of commercials with fast-moving "house rules" urging us to "put the love" into what we make, the premiere ep showed little to no improvement over the first season.

There was one shining star, though...

The production value still looks atrocious— shaky cameras and more obnoxious music abound. I know we're in a recession and all, gotta cut back, yadda yadda... but come on.

Aaron himself was a little more in control and at ease. Again, to me, much of the problems stem from Gordo's influence. With a different producer, and a proper TV studio, Aaron might work out just fine.

What did you think?

I agree. If Aaron had the right peeps around him telling him what to do he'd be have a pretty successful show.

And the kid presence annoyed me.

I watched his show one time and had a hard time getting through it. First off calling himself Big Daddy and saying things like put the love in it etc. Another thing that drives me nuts (could be just me) is the constant licking of his fingers. To me it is just gross and I know he is not the only one to do it. He does it the most though.

He was raised in a barn along with Gina Neely so finger licking is to be expected.

And GordToad Elliot's nickname is K Mart, didn't you know ?

All kinds of wrong.

Paula Deen must also be involved somehow. LOL. He better enjoy his 5 minutes that's all I can say. He cannot be renewed again.

I think Bob Tuschman should have his own show: Cookin' Ugly With Bob. Sorry, off topic.

I don't like trotting out the kids, either. It is so manipulative. They need to stop hiring these people off the street and stick with professionals. It's starting to weaken the whole line-up. I would rather watch one hour of an experienced, professional chef than a thousand hours of Aaron McGoo and his adorable child.

Is it me, or is Aaron just a nervous person. He just doesn't look 'comfortable' on camera. The show is like on fast forward. I'm exhausted watching it. No more.

Does ANYONE like him? He never should have won because he is just terrible- the way he calls himself Big Daddy constantly gives me the creeps.

I know. How did he win this gig? I mean Lisa or Kelsey would have been better. Or that young guy. Sean? I forgot his name. LOL. I saw the previews for Alex's new show and it looks awful. No cooking of course.

I couldn't watch more than 5 minutes. It's just TOO MUCH and I totally agree with you that the problem starts with Gordo. If he had a decent team around him, the show might actually be watchable.

Aaron tries way too hard. I want to reign him in and tell him to calm down. Chill!!!

Somehow, the Food Network is going in a different direction with their programming the last couple of years. I miss Mario.

I miss Mario too. And Emeril. And Sara. And Ming. And Anthony. And Michael. And Jamie. And............

I watched again this Sunday; I wanted to like it but I really hated it. He's still comes off as extremely nervous and doesn't seem to know what he's doing; his son seemed much more together than he. Also, his speech is just atrocious and really comes off, not as Southern or charming, but uneducated. I'm embarrassed for him.

The kid is cute...

'Trying too hard', and overproduced are good ways to describe the show. It isn't horrible, and I don't have an emotional attachment to any of the other goofs he beat in NFNS, so I don't hate it. Whenever FN features someone actually cooking food, they get points from me.

I assume this is not the kid who ran away? Whatever happened with that? Will he be on another show?

I tried watching a show in the first season and it was a little too much for me but I watched it Sunday and enjoyed it. He's seems toned down a and that's a plus for me.

I like seeing people cooking with their kids so he didn't annoy me.

McCargoo has the stage presence of a cat in a room full of rocking chairs.

Wasn't his claim-to-fame that he's a Hospital cook? I don't think I would have gone there....

That was not Aaron's claim to fame, read his bio. He's calm compared to the other two finalist.

I just read Jacob's post from Sept. re: Gordon Elliot producing and I agree -- it is just tooo much. Pull the camera back and tone the people down. Chef Jeff seems much more polished and professional -- how about a show for him?

Paula is still better on her daytime cooking show than on Paula's party -- it is such nauseating.

Good job Jacob!!

BTW, has anyone noitced the sound problems on the promo for Adam Gertler's show or do I need to get my tv fixed?

Christine :)

hot mess

At 1/07/2009 12:27 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

it just goes to show what happens when the decision makers at food network opted to go the way of professional wrestling with the next food network star. they put the fix in for whatever reason and what they got was one bad product..... there were those consierably better. as much as i want to like Aaron there is nothing likable about his show, even his appearance on dinner impossible was painful to watch. the guy just does not belong in front of the camera.
i for one am glad they gave adam a show. he may not have been the best but he defintely won the last couple shows and should have won next food network star it is good to see that at least tptb are giving him a chance. i hope he fairs better than Aaron.

At 1/07/2009 12:35 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree it was painful to watch. Its the small comments he makes that bring him down, like the lump crab meat.......he points to his bicep and says the lump crab meat comes from there, next to the bone.....ack!
Its a lack of experience and knowledge that shows and it shouldnt, those kinds of comments should have been cut for sure.

Why do they think if they stick the kid on there we will just fall for the show? It's a huge turn off to me.

Somehow I missed the show. Somehow I think I will miss it again this weekend.

I think I might be a racist. Checking the shows I watch none of the food shows have black people in them. Is it time for the Black Food Network? You know where a supporting member in a show is black, so that they can air the movie on the channel? On BFN the sous chefs will be black that way they will be air the show. We will see a lot of Iron Chef America reruns.

Oh I was wrong I watched the entire "Chef Jeff Project" hoping it would have a happy ending. According to Jeff's blog Jeff was supposed to be on "The Today Show" yesterday. I looked on their site and it did not have a video clip of Jeff. It did have MARIO BATALI making a skirt steak and plugging Terry Lodge.

He does come across as uneducated. He's just not polished like Pat Neely who I think is a doll.

And Alex's show. He's not cooking!!!

Maybe they should have a new "Who's the Next Food Network Star" that doesn't involve any cooking. Makes sense with the format today.

Addendum, I did find the Chef Jeff vid on today

Excuse me Anonymous 9:27 -
From the NF bio:
At the age of 13, Aaron was a Junior Volunteer in the kitchen at Cooper Hospital University. He has since worked as a chef in nine New Jersey restaurants including his own (McCargo's Restaurant), which he opened in 2003. Most recently, Aaron served as the executive chef at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia. He also attended Atlantic Cape Community College's Academy of Culinary Arts.

You see that little thing "most recently?" I do not recall at any time during the TNFS series a mention of him having a restaurant -- but certainly there was mention of him working in a Hospital Kitchen.

Let's face it. FN has lost it's edge. They've taken food instruction and morphed it into a "Survivor" experience. Reality TV meets food. Blech.

All the GOOD chefs, have gone to PBS and Create! That channel is a thousand times better than FN now!

Aaron McCargo haters, I HEAR YOU and I'm one of you! Head to FoodNetworkHumor.com - they hate him too and boy do they make me laugh with their posts slamming him.

And is it me or do his hideous gold earrings get bigger every episode?

Aaron's show will get better over time. The fans of Lisa and Chelsea are trying to find things that are wrong with his show to bolster their feeling that someone else should won NFS. Lisa is an excellent cook but she was pretentious and a victim of her nerves. She froze on Rachael Ray and came off as very tense at other times. Chelsea was like a wind up doll although her love for food seemed genuine.

I could never understand what the hell Aaron's trying to say on his show ... So, I gave up on it ... and will NOT watch it ever again ...

The sound level is out of whack in the commercials for Aaron / Adam / Ted's shows ... They're screaming at us thinking that it'll get us to watch the craptacular shows ... Ain't gonna happen, FogleTusch ...

The real winner of this past season of TNFNS was Kelsey ... She won the viewers' vote ... But, FogleTusch didn't want us to pick the show that we wanted ... Just like last year & two years ago (when the real winner was Reggie and not that monkey Guy Ferry) ...

They keep changing the daytime line -up and I never know who is on when ...

Based on WHO was in the majority of the holiday shows, we now know who'll we will be stuck with for years with crappy shows ...

I want to like him. I think I probably would like him in person. But his shows are just not good at all.

For everyone who is comparing him to other FN personalities, why are you only comparing him to other minorities on the network? You know what he has in common with the Neelys (who I adore!) and Chef Jeff? They're all cooks. Just like Giada, Rachel, Ina, Bobby, etc. It is pointless just to compare him to the other black folks on FN as if that is some special niche.

I LOVE his show! I think his show reaches out to ANOTHER cooking demographic besides women and white men. It's a relaxed atmosphere where there's room to make finger-licking good food and to connect with the passionate food lover, such as myself. My only problem is that the show isn't long enough so that he doesn't have to zoom thru the recipes.

Aaron's show is just fine. He gets high ratings among the target audience for his show. Let the haters hate while Aaron continues to cash his checks.

I know Aaron personally and love his show! Yeah, of course, in the beginning, it was a bit much, but he has toned his show down. He was really nervous then.

I just started watching his show this season. I think he is great, he cooks his ass off and I am sure there are a lot of women out there who wished they had an Aaron at home.

At 3/28/2011 3:58 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

personally i think the guy has fantastic flavor in his recipes is he emeril?no but niether is bobby and viceversa. but i do agree on the lineups what is up no continuity and no cooking shows that teach at night anymore remember when we were shown recipes and not some foodie competition with very very arrogant judges the rest of the world is not downtown ny,chicago la etc some of these shows are getting to where the only items you can get at the store are s&pbutter and creme

I love the recipes he uses, tried a couple and they turned out great. I look forward to his show, everyone has favorites, he is new on food network and I like him.

Im proud to see more black cooks and chefs on the Food Network. I like Aarons show. He's hillarious and love his recipes. Give him a chance.
