Debbie a Shoo-In to Win? I'm Not So Sure.

A lot of people seem to think Debbie already has it in the bag to win season 5 of The Next Food Network Star, but I'm not so sure. I may be a notoriously bad picker of reality show contest winners (I was so sure Clay Aiken was going to win!), but the fact that we've mostly heard only positive things from the judges and guests, makes me think they're trying to pull a fast one on us.

I found the thing Giada said about Debbie--something like, "I just want to sit on my couch with a cup of coffee and watch her."--along with all that praise and we-like-what-you're-saying looks from Susie and the rest of the bunch so brazenly highlighted by the producers. It's almost like they want to pound it over our heads: We Like Debbie!

Well, I'm not buying it.

I may be bad at picking winners, but I think I know when producers try to mislead an audience to make the "story" interesting.

That's also why I think we're not seeing the whole picture of Teddy, who's been portrayed mostly negatively in the past two episodes.

So far he's mostly just coming across as a bumbling fool. His idea of high energy on camera came off like a nervous high schooler on speed trying out to be a local weatherman or something ("We're going to have a GREAT storm tomorrow with GREAT thunder and GREAT wind...") as opposed to a knowledgeable culinary personality.

Remember what Susie told me in our interview: "It's a wild, really great ride this season and how it starts isn't how you think it's going to end."

It's reality show 101, peeps. If you're only portrayed positively, you're gonna get eliminated. Mark my word.

How long you think Debbie will last?

Hopefully not long...something about her really rubs me the wrong way....like she's purposely trying to be what she thinks they are looking for.

I hate her because she's fat. There. I said it.

Well, that and because she looks like Margaret Cho. Margaret Cho is HORRIBLY unfunny.

God, as long as it's not Katie. What a dim bulb. I keep waiting for those giant-bug eyes to just fall right out of her head, a la Futurama.

Also, her bio says she's been all over local TV in her hometown. Um, how/why? Her voice is like a fork on a chalkboard! Her meals suck.

Leave it to Season 5 to make frigging GUY seem knowledgeable.

I agree imagine if they turned Katie into the winning, it's hard to believe she went to cooking school, that rack of lamb that was burned on the outside and raw inside, why didn't she cut the chops and then broil them? It seems like Giada saved her this time.

Teddy was great in Throwdown - charming, likeable, cooking chops. But in TNFNS, geez, he's always show in the back row with this sorry "I'm standing in the corner" look. Like you say, Jacob, it's all down to the producers and editing guiding us to what they want us to see.

I'll be glad when Debbie's gone. She was toast for me after that first episode.

I'm starting to like Debbie, even though I hated her weaseliness on the first episode. I'll give her a chance.

I never go with the Producer's Pick, and the editing is meant to build a story. Most likely, someone who seems like a nonentity now will gain momentum as the season continues.

Debbie? Really? I would've thought if there were an early front runner it would be Jeffrey, no?

(PS - I like Teddy, too.)

Hey Jacob, all these anonymous commentor are douche bags if they can't put it where the sun don't shine with their name on it...you really should make people put their names of some kind of id on b/c while their are fat haters and all that anonymous commentors are just pussies without balls to stand by what they say...heck even some sign ons have avatars next to their names...that is sooo cool...

Love Food Network Addict all the fun and none of the time wasted watching Food Network.

Patrica, either you're illiterate, dyslexic, can't type or can't spell, because that made almost NO sense. Wow. As to your point - things wouldn't be nearly as fun if we couldn't be little bitches with our anonymous comments. Live with it.

I'm with Sarah, something about Debbie chafes me the wrong way. She comes across as really insincere. I'm rooting for Jeffrey, he is charming indeed.

The one thing we DO KNOW for sure is that you can't take anything Suze says seriously even if she thinks that she is being sincere.

The Folks at FN are not nearly as clever as they think they are.

Forgot to add: Don't forget they're gushing or Jeffery this whole time as well.

I'm going with marketing and which area is lacking or in-demand.

Ethnic foods are in. Asian foods are not well represented. And soul food is all the rage for ratings. So maybe Debbie is a Mi-Shoo-In?

But the same can be said for a few other personalities as well.

FN doesn't have an average "mom" on the show. Yes, Giada is a mom, but I don't think she really represents the average mom.

FN could use a does of fabulous from Michael.

And I like Katie's spin on health food more so than Ellie Krieger.

PatriciaApplequist -

#1 - "pussies", by definition, do not have balls. Use a hand mirror, and check. You'll find one OR the other, I swear.

#2 - These dopes aspire to be TV personalities - despite of their lack of skill, knowledge, poise, & experience. You'd think they'd at least bring photogenic foundation to the table. But noooooo.

#3 - If comments upset you so much, stop reading them. You can enjoy FNAddict just fine, as I did formonths, by reading the "information" and not the "opinions"

#4 - Fatty.

Also, can we please all agree that Jeffrey wouldn't at be a contender, or charming, or interesting - if not for the success of "Sex and the City" and his obvious attempts to remind middle-aged women that he looks like Aidan?

Who is Aidan? WTF are you saying? Are you drunk?

I like Jeffrey. He's cute, and he's a good sport. I'm rooting for him, along with a few others.

Quite right Jacob, we keep forgetting that this is produced, its tv. they're plotting out the drama arcs and building the characters just like any soap opera would. What great tv if we got near to the end and Debbie looks like suddenly she might not make it. Whoa, the drama.

They probably thought and said the same thing last season when it was very clear very early on that Aaron was getting special treatment.

I agree with you Jacob. I loved Teddy on Throwdown and I like him on TNFNS as long as he's not trying to speak to the camera. And also his food seems great.

I like Jeffery but since it will be a female it will definitely be Jamika. Debbie has no appeal on screen at all. JMO.

At 6/16/2009 12:09 PM , Blogger Stacey said...

As of now, my top two faves are Jamika and Jeffrey. I like Michael but not sure if he could carry a whole cooking show. Maybe a food/presentation show with side trips to destination points.

Cannot look at Debbie the same now. And the preview for next week had her stating something about not wanting a finalist on her team if she can't trust him. Hello!! Pot calling the kettle black.

I am still mixed on Teddy. I want to like him but not sure if I di yet.

The others are sadly more forgettable to me.

And I do remind myself there is a lot edited out that we don't get to see.

Even Bob admits that much is left on the cutting room floor. They want drama and so they edit everything with that in mind. After the protests about how Aaron seemed to get all the breaks last year, Jacob is probably right. We are being set up for even MORE drama this year and Debbie will be cut.

There's no market for a Korean cooking show. She has ZERO chance of winning.

Maybe this riveting drama of TNFNS will earn Herr Tuschman his Daytime Emmy he so covets.

I also agree with Brian that no market exists for a Korean cooking show. The network will likely ask her to multitask and play several Asian roles to give off a genuine air of ethnicity once they finalize how to set the fix.

Oh Jacob,

how I totally disagree! Debbie seems like the villain right now on the show. Who sees her as the front runner? I agree on likable Jamika and Jeffrey. Eddie is so cute but boring, and Katie is great over at healthy eats.com but I DO NOT want to see her with her own show. Stick to writing on blogs.

I LOVE Michael, but I live very close to the village(in NYC), so there are lots of "Michaels" I would love to see with their own shows, cooking or otherwise. Teddy doesn't float my boat, but neither did Aaron last year. I love him now. I guess we'll have to wait and see who Food Network chooses for us lol!

Debbie the chunk is NOT going to win!

And people care what this loser Jacob think, why exactly?

I don't like Debbie. Nothing about her makes me want to watch her. I also don't like Teddy at this point...bumbling fool sounds about right for him.

Jamika is good so far, and Jeffrey still seems like a douchebag. I couldn't watch him even if I wanted to--I don't care how long you grow out that hair, Jeffrey. We all can see what's happening on top.

I like her and I think she would do a good job! It's between her and Jamica!

I think Debbie showed her true colors in the first episode. While she may have some ability at humor-filled presentation I think she lacks integrity in a big way.

She lied about coming in under the shopping amount and didn't get what everyone needed.

She also mislead the judges by saying that angel food cake was a group project. I believe she's the one who made that pathetic call while still in the store.

Even my 10-year old daughter knew better and turned to me during that episode and said, "they're not supposed to buy cake already made, they're supposed to make it".

I like Jeffrey because he has a pleasant demeanor, he's calm (so far), he seems to be knowledgeable about food and he also has the added bonus ability to be describe his food in a way that is quite appetizing.

The health food contestant should be the rest to go. Nothing that comes out of her mouth or from her hands looks or sounds appetizing in any way. And the deer-in-the-headlights look is a turn off.

At 6/19/2009 2:20 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I meant to say the health food contestant should be the "next" to go.

Considering how much I hate typos I should do a better job of proofing.

At 6/19/2009 4:37 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Why are they "supposed" to make their own cake? Sandra Lee and Rachael use store bought.

What happened to "5 Ingredient Fix"? Where's Claire? Is Claire eating an eclaire somewhere, maybe in a chair now that she has time to spare watching "Con-Air"? She had such a flare for fare and long hair down to there! LOL I'm tired. Ummmmm Debbie is a snake IMO. Definitely can't put my finger on it but she's up to no good.

Hey Patricia Appelquist,

I think most of us "Anonymous" posters aren't hiding behind anything -- it's just sort of a pain to have to sign up for some sort of ID I'll never use except for here.

If you look at the FN personalities that currently have their own shows, I think you'll find who the next winner will be. It has very little to do with talent and a whole lot more to do with who FN thinks they need to specifically target a percentage of the veiwers. Aron Mcargo has a horrible FN show, yet he's been renewed twice already. Aida Mollencamp is obviously meant to target the 20-30 something group, despite the fact she's as dumb as a rock. I think Debbie will win, just because the FN doesn't have an asian influence show yet and they're scrambling to keep things fresh to retain their viewers and gain new ones.
