Eddie Gilbert - Please Stop Memorizing 'Chicken Soup for the Cook' Quotes

I, like many other people on the planet in which we live, was looking forward to seeing how The Next Food Network Star contestant Eddie Gilbert would fare on the reality show. "Who still wears a fauxhawk like that," I wondered. Everyone just told me to stop worrying about that and notice that he's handsome or hot or something like that. I guess, compared to the rest, perhaps he is.

So it pains me to say that Eddie bored me to death in the first episode.

Who says with a straight face: "My motto is: what would you do today if you knew you could not fail?" (Or something like that. The quote was just so silly I didn't bother to go back and check it.) It's funny he mentions not failing, because it strikes me as odd that he'd memorize a little line like this, knowing he'd be asked this question.

Would someone who's not afraid to fail recite a memorized, banal line like that? Can't a fearless person just speak from the heart?

And then his presentation at Butter was just redic, as the judges noted. "A recipe is a foundation, but your hands should create the symphony" ??????

I think Eddie must have thought these lines would come off as touching and powerful, but truthfully they just sounded like a reality show contestant memorizing things he thought people would want to hear.

Try again, Eddie!

Oh I'm with you on this. I thought he was completely ridiculous when making these banal comments. We can only hope that won't be the case the next time around...

I'm so totally with you on this too. Honestly i was squicked out by the dude. He seemed so insincere and rehearsed. I kind of wish he'd gone home instead of Jen.

Say Jake,
Does your Astroturfian relationship with FN allow you to show support to any one contestant of this show ?

You make this guy out to be a buffoon by referencing one canned line. You should reserve a bit of your scorn for Herr Tuschwipe& Co who are putting these people thru hoops all because they are desperate to roll out a reality show.

Dude I don't get you. Most of these contestants don't deserve to be mocked. They've been sucked in by FN. You should be mocking tools like Goldman and Guarnawhatever for some of the shit they say.

Well, I feel like a complete dweeb -- I actually didn't mind the "if you knew you could not fail" comment -- I think it is just because I am aware that I hold myself back from a lot of things just because of a fear of failure. But that's just me.

His B.L.A.S.T boats sounded better in theory than they looked. And does adding avocado to EVERYTHING make it "Californian"?

Christine :)

I completely agree, and it also bugged the crap out of me when he bragged how he likes to think outside the box, thereby proving that he can't.

Jacob does have a point. But I'm reminded of a quote I read on Towleroad.com in response to the weekly bash-a-thon of Adam Lambert, Kris Allen and the other "Idol" contestants.

To wit: "YOU try performing something fresh and original every week for 25 million judgmental assholes."

So I'd say, cut Eddie some slack. I don't disagree with you, but at the same time, YOU try being witty and charming at the drop of a hat staring down your culinary idols and/or a cranky judges with a film camera pointed in your face, with no control over how your comments will be edited in the final product.

Just sayin'...

Exactly right, Turtle. And Alec too. Eddie didn't control the editing which may have made things look much different than they actually were. What brings on the sudden snark from you? (By the way, please use "in my opinion" and not "truthfully," since it makes you sound like you're just memorizing things you think others will want to read.) Can we expect an equally unflattering comment about each contestant, and if so, when? More importantly, have you ever dashed off a single entry on this blog without pausing to read it over and over first?

Re: 1:32

Hey Eddie - Groucho Marx called. He says either tweez, or add a mustache and glasses to complete the homage.

Hmm...Jacob blogs about Eddie being "cheesy" and Tuschman blogs about not keeping Jen in favor of Eddie in the same week. "Coincidence" much?

Bobo (jacob) is affliated with FN in some way and they channel thru each other.

Always has been an Astroturfer for FN.

I am thinking there is a connection between them thru ex boyfriends or something like that.

I think contestant Eddie Gilbert is very handsome. Probably he doesn't know how to face the reality show. I hope everything is going to be fine.
