Next Food Network Star - Episode 2

Hmmm... we had a screaming Brett, a bumbling Eddie, and "mommy mayhem" Melissa.

While I think the "reaction shots" this show uses are entertaining (you know, those exaggerated looks of boredom or indifference or disgust on the judges faces after a contestant says something), I don't think we should assume that they are true reactions to what was just said or that they were reactions at all. I think they showed the Good Housekeeping woman give the same reaction 3 times! They must get some establishing shots of these judges, perhaps while bored in-between action, and then intersperse them into the show to add to the "story."

Anyway, did you agree with who went home?

(Oh, and Giada can get nasty!)

Definitely! Brett was so ANGRY AND JEALOUS that the judges were praising Melissa and her dish that he couldn't keep his mouth shut. His attitude stink!

This episode reaffirmed what we already knew. Giada DeLaurentiis is a bigger bitch than Leona Helmsley.

Congrats Jameka! You won this thing. Debbie is so unappealing. Melissa and Katie are totally unwatchable. You go girl. My fav is Jeffrey but it has to be a female this time.

Lol. I like Giada but all that make up. WOW.

I agree with Brett being sent home as well. There was just nothing likable or warm about him - he always seemed loud and brash and like you wouldn't want to be anywhere near him if he ever got *really* angry.

But omg, Jacob, *what* was Eddie going on about in the Good Housekeeping challenge?? "Women sometimes have certain dietary restrictions and requirements that make them have to eat a little differently.."? , "It was a very intimate night with my girlfriend.. my roomates were gone, we had the house all to ourselves..." , Then finishing with that speech into the camera, directed at his girl? You might be right.. he might've been high. Or drunk.

I know Giada can get nasty, but she's a little right - the more Eddie talks, the more insincere he sounds. He gives me the wiggins, dude. His food looked pretty good though, so he just might make it longer than i'd have guessed from seeing ep. 1. This whole thing is proving pretty interesting, i'm surprised! :)

I don't agree with Brett going home. I don't see Katie being appealing to a wide audience. It doesn't seem like Melissa could handle the pressure of a commercial kitchen and a cooking show. Her appeal is lacking. Jeffrey is very interesting and is a good salesman! Not sure what Eddie was rambling on and on about.

Giada needs to chill a bit.

The judges got on Brett about the lack of connection to his holiday (April Fool's Day "foods"-like what?) and yet seemed to ignore the fact that Debbie's food had absolutely nothing to do with Mardi Gras! Pork pot stickers??? Mardi Gras should have been a gimme to connect!

I am bittersweet about this episode. I was somewhat surprised that Eddie was in the bottom 2 again considering that he won the primary challenge and did better than some others in the "real" challenge, but I've come to terms that we don't get to see everything that goes on and therefore can't make a completely accurate opinion. But I digress. I was predicting that Katie was going home, and I can't believe she hasn't yet. Last week she did crappy and this week she did even worse. I'm not sorry to see Brett go either because based on the last two episodes I find him to be a bit of an asshole. Melissa pissed me off too, especially with her whole "that compromised my integrity" whine. Seriously, if you need help from your entire team last week to get your tarts made and then need help from two people this week and then wonder about your "integrity"...you have none.

I see Katie and Eddie being the next to go, followed by Melissa. From now, I can see Jeffrey, Debbie, or Jamika winning it all, and Michael is such a wild card. I would totally watch his show and I find him hilarious in a flaming way.

BTW, next week's preview looks like a trainwreck. I can't wait to watch =D

All I can say is who has pot stickers for Mardi Gras???

Brett offered, on is own, to help out Melissa, then acts like a douche during judging? Very glad he was sent home.

Melissa sooooooo annoying gimme me a break. She needs an entourage of people to help her deliver. I wish the boys had not helped her so we can see what would have become of her food. She needs to go back to home with her kids. Jamika was graceful and delivered well. Jeffrey is the man. He got Ground Hog Day, that was complete injustice I don't know what they eat on that holiday but still delivered a great dish. He is beautiful to watch and he makes me hungry every time he explains his dish.

I agree with the above posters...who the hell picked Mardi Gras or Groundhog Day or April Fool's Day? There can be some foods for Mardi Gras (a lot of cajun or creole food or King Cake) but nobody eats anything specifically for many of these days. This is crappy planning on FN's part and really douchey of them.

LOOOOOVE Jeffrey. What a trooper. GROUNDHOG DAY
what the f.... is that when it comes to food??????

I just love it when one of the FN regulars makes a comment about one of the contestants being “annoying.” The resulting irony is just…beautiful.
The only reason I’d even consider watching this show is to see how high the hypocrisy level gets.
And I agree with the comment about Giada’s makeup; it looked like she purchased the makeup gun Homer Simpson invented and set it to “whore.” Tone that down, along with the attitude, and I might take her seriously as a judge.

At 6/15/2009 1:19 AM , Anonymous Turtle said...

Guys, Debbie tied in the holiday and the potstickers with stories about her mother and throwing parties and all that. I thought she was cute and charming.

She and Jamika really pulled it off for me, but at the same time, I don't think either one of them has the killer-shark, type-A personality of most FN stars like Bobby, Giada, Rachael, Sandra, Paula, the Deens, etc. They're most like Ina, but she has a special place at FN where she does her own thing.

I don't have a problem with Eddie like Jacob does. I think some media training and he could get a handle on the criticisms he was given tonight. But clearly he's doomed, unless he starts just knocking it out of the park.

Agreed, I would totally watch Michael's show. But I think he's just too original for FN, frankly.

Based on two eps, it's Debbie, Jamika and Jeffrey.

P.S. Oh, man, Giada. I have such a love-hate relationship with her. Her food is SO good; I use many of her recipes. But she doesn't come off as relatable and inviting at ALL. That attitude is so off-putting and she becomes more pretentious with each passing year. I feel like she'd cut my throat if I didn't notice the arrangement of basil in the centerpiece.

I'm in the herd that would watch Michael's show. He has the cooking chops, the personality, and he can out-brash Fieri in a much more appealing manner.

I agree that going for the jugular against a peer - especially in that stand-up with the judge's setting - really exposes your own jugular just as much. At the same time, she's had to be helped in two out of two episodes. I'm glad Brett is gone, but she and our dietician and our faux-hawk guy should be the next three gone, in just about that order.

In my opinion, Giada can say whatever she damn well pleases. She's by and large a top culinary authority which is WAY more than any of our TNFNS contestants can say. Also keep in mind she's being a judge, not the "everyday italian" we're used to, so it's her job to cut to the chase. I applaud her backbone and think her "bitchy" comments were spot on.

Her make up artist, however, needs to be fired.

As for the contestants....oh boy. I'm really pulling for no-formal-training Eddie...I just don't want to hear about the time he did the thing w/ his girlfriend, once upon an intimate night. YOU KIDDING ME EDDIE? And THANK YOU Bobby Flay for slammin on the E-brake just in time. You saved America from losing their late night snack.

And man...Brett was not my first choice to be sent home. UNTIL he turned into a total snake in the evaluation room! PEACE OUT! See ya, DEFinitely wouldn't wanna be ya! Jackass... Did you forget that there are millions of "us" behind that one camera?? What was that little phrase we all learned as children about when we have nothing nice to say?????

Omg, I can not WAIT until next Sunday. Screw winter/summer/spring/fall....TNFNS is my favorite season of the year!

I love Giada's recipes but she is not a "top culinary authority". Come on now. But then again America can't think on it's own so she probably is.

At 6/15/2009 9:23 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Oh I swore I wouldn't watch... damn. What insensed me even more is that as Brett is making his "kiss and cry" exit Melissa is there blowing him kisses. What the hell? He just tried to send you up the river, you ding dong.

I'm trying to figure out if they've already decided who their winner is before they even put them through this nonsense. The Korean girl, Mr California "Greek God" and the Gatekeeper of Badness. And we know that they'll just recycle the losers into something else on FN so does it really matter who wins?

At 6/15/2009 9:40 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Brett was a little bitch. I'm sure they knew he was lying but because they let Debbie of the hook the had to find another excuse to let him go.

Debbie told a good story about pot-stickers. But anyone else would have been given a hard time.

And speaking of which Giada seemed to be on her best behavior last night. But that make up! Wow! However she did deliver the best line of the night when she mentions talking too much becomes insecure and the it becomes annoying. I sure FN's Queen on mean was oblivious to her hypocrisy.

Yeah, this thing is down to Jamika, Debbie, and Jeffrey. Unfortunatly I think they're still shooting for a more diverse lineup this year and they're going to fill in the spot they probably would have given to Nipa had she not flaked out and failed.

Personally, I think Jeffrey looks and sounds like a total douchebag. I wouldn't watch his show, and I keep rolling my eyes when he's speaking.

I still think Debbie should have gone home last week. She's cute, she's perky, she's got some neat stories, but come on...store-bought angel food cake as a substitute for real food? That kind of mistake should have sent her packing.

Eddie = douchebag. His Valentine's Day presentation was just painful to watch.

At 6/15/2009 9:58 AM , Blogger Angie said...

Oh, and Brett? Yikes. What a tool. He wasn't sincere and I couldn't figure out why he was yelling at me all the time. And that was a total low-class move trying to throw Melissa under the bus. As far as the camera was concerned, he helped her plate her food and that was it. To even insinuate that her food was not her own is low. Melissa won't make it, but man...to send her up river like that was just trashy.

Maybe I'm the only person in American that doesn't get it.

Debbie -- how out on a limb is potstickers (Mondu) for a Korean? All she brings is an Asian themed show hosted by a Margret Cho look-alike. She comes off too rehearsed and phoney.
Eddie- TMI. We already have Big Daddy to gross us out.
Jamika - really? Nothing about her personality or cooking stands out.
The Dietician? Please! The Judges have nothing nice to say about her food, she's as interesting as a wet bar towel, and yet they kept her?
Melissa - I know you mean well. How the heck did you get through the screening process? You're the opposite of a "ringer.
Michael? Too much for FN. Maybe the "alternate lifestyle" channels can find a place for you. Too out of the mold.

Anyone left out? Yea, they just don't do anything for me. I like Jeffrey -- he'd be my pick to win if this weren't such a farce. With Giada being the Wicked Witch, I can only wonder if Ina is the Good Witch. Makes for good TV, no?

Some retard said : " She's by and large a top culinary authority "

UH ?? Princess Giada doesn't know where saffron comes from. She probably thinks balsamic vinegar comes from balsam trees.

Omg, I can't wait til next Sunday to see what Elvira DeLaurentiis will pull.

At 6/15/2009 10:53 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

"The Alternate Lifestyle Channels"? You tolerate Cat and Ted because you can't tell, but Michael's too out?

Don't let your own prejudices hide that close to the surface. Any channel that can tolerate Guy Fieri can tolerate Michael.

Speaking as a FN-watching queer I'm very happy to have more of MY demographic represented.

At 6/15/2009 11:06 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I love Michael. FN will probably force him into a mellower makeover to make him marketable, but his food is ALWAYS looking good (would love to try it), he is fun, friendly, and unpredictable. He would definitely be tivo'ed at my house. I adore him, but I think Bobby Flay is terrified. lol.

The Good Housekeeping quote he made was hysterical. Love him!

At 6/15/2009 12:10 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I really don't understand the reasoning or the fairness behind some of these challenges. April Fool's Day and Groundhog Day, c'mon who makes a special meal on those days! And the harshness of the judges is a bit much. What ever happened to CONSTRUCTIVE criticism.

It doesn't surprise me that Brett was booted off although I expected Katie to go. I like the idea of healthier cooking, but it has to be tasty too and by the remarks of the judges, hers wasn't. Like some of the others, the "love" from the judges towards Debbie make it seem like she's already the 'chosen one'. I thought it was funny in the previews for next week when SHE questioned someone's integrity. Talk about the pot call the kettle black.

Why do I watch this show?!

At 6/15/2009 12:18 PM , Blogger Lord of Light AZ said...

Debbie is still there, what a drag. I surely would have expected cajun or creole for Mardi Gras.

Katie should have been the one let go. Nothing but unappealing food.

Brett's whining probably hurt him. He took what he could from the "holiday" he was given.

I don't think Melissa is going to cut it. She either will have to learn how to deal with a real kitchen or give up.

They totally called it last night, Jeffrey comes across like a car salesman. He is a total con man!

He's dishonest too. He's not from Greece or Italy - he's from the Middle East!!! Doesn't he know that we can dig up info on anyone thanks to the Internet?!?!?!

Debbie rocked it! Those potstickers looked so good!

And I'm also over the gay guy. You really think you could watch a show with that "gayness" all the time? It would get old real quick.

I've only seen last night's ep. so have nothing else from the season to go on. But it looked like the two tall guys were both trying (and failing) to be Guy Fieri during the cooking show demo tape exercise, and it looked really bad.

Oh and I could I forget Eddie choking on camera!!!

How insecure is he? Nothing says "I'm insecure" about my relationship then telling the world on national TV that you love your girlfriend the way he did.

How he got on the show I have no idea. Giada was right about him, totally forgettable!

I refuse to learn their names...but the Mom's lack of commercial kitchen knowledge, combined with her need for help in plating would make her a failure as a FN host.

Oh, unless her show features a set that looks like a HOME KITCHEN.

And unless that show has A STAFF OF PEOPLE WHO HELP THE CHEF.

But we all know there are no shows like that.

Could Bob being a bigger moron? Someone says they helped someone else PLATE food, and he asks "Are the recipes and food your own?" So if I put a frame around a painting I can say the painting is partially mine? He and Susie continually kill this show's appeal. Neither seems to know much about food, and Susie is a total cunt. I can't stand either one. I wish Bobby would comment more on the actual food -- his opinion is the only one that matters to me.

I still can't see any of these people hosting their own show. Jamika has promise, but I can't say even she's fully won me over. Jeffrey's shine has definitely wore off. I'm getting sick of his BS -- and his main appeal seems that Susie wants to fuck his brains out.

At 6/15/2009 6:32 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Michael loses appeal for me because he just seems dirty! Between the hair, beard and all the tattoos, I feel creeped out!

Debbie's potstickers, with or without her "mom" story have NOTHING to do with Mardi Gras!!! They may have tasted good, but she also missed the mark. The key is she missed the mark on an easy holiday, not some random holiday like Ground Hog's Day or April Fool's or Giada is the Queen of the World Day.

Why do they keep giving the dietician a break? Everytime she leaves they say her food has no taste and she was forcing the "healthy" thing down their throats. How is that learning.

Brett should have shut his mouth because Mommy would likely have ended up in the bottom 3. Also, she doesn't have the chops to last, anyway.

None of them are all that interesting to watch.

At 6/15/2009 7:49 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Michael is funny but could get over the top. Jamika needs a little more energy. Melissa has a really annoying way about her. Debbie is a liar. Teddy is nice but boring. Eddie WTF is he doing on this show?

I am rooting for Jeffrey he is handsome, extremely talented, describes food well and is sexy to watch.

Re: Michael

It's hard to be "fabulous" when your style screams "creepy birthday clown". FYI

At 6/16/2009 1:32 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

People like Michael reduce gays to a joke. He's the worst thing for gays because many people who know nothing about them are only exposed to people like him. They think this is what the average gay guy is like, which is why have such a negative perception.

At 6/16/2009 11:22 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Michael seems like he is a very good cook and very knowledgeable about food. But as this is FN that means nothing.

He has to play up his personality for him to get any consideration from the judges. This puts him in a trap as he has already been introduced as this 'fabulous' gay guy character. It will be a little hard for him to dial it back now.

At 6/16/2009 3:17 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I feel a bit bad for Michael being put into the sissy gay role, but then again, he let it happen. For me, it definitely detracts from what seems to be excellent cooking chops.

I stopped watching mid-way through Guy Fieri's season because I couldn't stand the screaming gay guy who became his final competition. Sassy!

Eddie- "So I wanted to prepare something that reminded me of my first date with my girlfriend. That's why I have smoked you people a big 'F'ing sausage, cuz that's what she got that night HEY YOOOOOO!!!!!!
Debbie- "I made pot stickers, umm, because that's what Asians raised in the South eat at Mardi Gras... (sniff) mommy showed me how to cook em."
Debbie- "I made pot sticker, umm, because that's what Asians raised in the South eat on Arbor Day... (sniff) mommy showed me how to cook em."
Debbie- "I made pot stickers, umm, because that's what Asians raised in the South eat on Ramadan... (sniff) mommy showed me how to cook em."

What irks me about the show was that they busted Jeffrey for not really making something that applied to his holiday (what was he supposed to serve, Punxsutawney Phil's filet?), but Debbie didn't either and the judges all but humped the table over her pot stickers, which I suspect she was going to make regardless of what holiday she got...probably figured she'd spin her little yarn about her family and the judges would yammer about how she personalized the dish and blah blah blah. Just mentioning that mom or grandma taught you to do something isn't in itself interesting and the judges seemed way to enthusiastic to me about her story.
That said, Debbie is ok. Eddie's kind of a tool and looks like John Rocker. Michael had a good presentation I thought. Jamica did pretty well and so did Jeffery. Brett acted like a goober and had no chance of winning so him leaving was no great shakes. He was amusing, but I think in an unintentional way.
