Next Food Network Star - Episode 3

Rule #1,782 when you're a contestant on The Next Food Network Star is: only cook your own recipes... and if you're not cooking your own recipes, don't attribute them to Paula Deen, Eddie!

In case you haven't watched yet, Eddie told the judges in the judging room that his watermelon & feta salad that he cooked for INA GARTEN came from a Paula Deen cookbook. Here's a thought, Eddie: if you want to steal a Paula Deen recipe, steal a good one?! Make her fried chicken. Make her blueberry cobbler. Don't make some watermelon salad with raw onion that Paula probably added because Gordon Elliott told her it was watermelon week and she had to think of something.

Quite a lot of drama this week! I could have taken a little less eye rolling on Eddie's part, and a lot less of Teddy's crying. In fact, I would have been fine if both had gone home.

What did you think?

Jeffrey, Michael, and Jamika are the only ones with any chance... especially if Debbie breaks her face next episode.

Man, if you go home on this show, you need to just plain give up on your dream of food tv. You end up looking SO FRIGGING BAD, a school cafeteria wouldn't hire you.

Eddie and Teddy really sucked this week. I actually thought a bit higher of Teddy after not getting involved with Brett about Melissa last week, but he took douchey to a whole new level this week. Seriously...he's an asshole and I can't wait for him to be done. I went into this speculating that either Katie or Eddie would be gone. I was surprised that Katie stepped up a little bit this week but I still think that if she doesn't deliver next week she's gone. If not her it's Teddy. Debbie was kind of a catty bitch this week too, although I must admit if Teddy pulled his crap on me I would have probably decked him. Melissa did okay this week but not great, and same with Michael. Jamika was a little better and Jeffrey was definitely the big winner yet again.

Either Jeffrey is going to win this thing huge like he's done the last three weeks, or there's going to be an episode in the near future where he completely loses it.

I was really hoping that the 'selection commmittee' would send both Teddy and Eddie home this week. After both of their perfermances, I can't respect either of them.

Although he will forever be known in our household as "Ediot" for trying to blame his recipe's failure on Queen Paula, Eddie was NOT the NOOB who deserved the boot this week. That honor has to go to Katie, who has for three solid weeks now proved that she knows NOTHING about food except how it performs once it is swallowed. I swear to God if she says the word "antioxidants" one more time... Apparently she needs to find out if there is a "Nutrition Channel" and see if they are having a Next Star contest over there. We Food Network addicts like our food beautiful and tasty...Just like Paula and Ina.

They better hope that Jeffrey and Jamika don't flame out because if they do the producers are SCREWED. No one else has even a remote shot at hosting their own show. Jeffrey's food is starting to fall into a pattern, and quite frankly I was a little underwhelmed by what Jamika cooked this week. But Eddie... seriously, dude, could you be a bigger hypocrite? He's rolling his eyes at Mellisa and dismissing her cooking prowess, and then reveals he used someone else's recipe. What a complete douche. The look on Bobby's face when he heard that was priceless.

Teddy broke one of my reality TV show rules: DON'T CRY! I hate when men weep on TV. It just looks so wrong. He seems to be cracking under the pressure of the show. I'm guessing he's the next to go, since they have some weird affinity for Katie, who can't cook but is reasonably attractive.

They should have sent both of them home and the winner of next weeks challenge would have the advantage the week after that. This cast is missing a bitchy contestant like Lisa Garza was last season.

Katie stays because others screw up so bad. Eddie blew the Paula Deen thing but Teddy best watch it, another act like tonight and he will be packing his trash and headin' out and Katie will be safe another week....

Jeffrey is the only chance this show has. Go and win it all.

Why are these people always crying?

I've seen grown men take a 90 mph baseball to their body with less drama. Sheesh

Please stop the dang tears.

Teddy just go the frig away and take Debbie, the new integrity gal with you

Michael has created outstanding food every time. Tonight he seemed a bit off - haven't we all had those moments - but generally he has had the big personality that FN needs and wants. Good food, bigger than life personality - those are the two things they WANT.

What has amazed me, here and elsewhere, is how many shades the homophobia assumes.

My take on things is that next Teddy goes, because tonight both of them should have. The next two weeks will be Debbie/Kate or Kate/Debbie. Melissa will fall to the side of the road at some point. The contest comes down to Jeffrey, Jamika, and Michael. A lot of folks seem to think Jeffrey might win, and if he comes up with some different family stories he may. And even if they aren't the winner, Jamika and Michael will both end up with a show, ala Adam Gertler.

............all one man's opinion.

When Suzie asked why they both couldnt go, I started to get excited...Eddie and Teddy both deserved the big boot. It's a shame that Teddy's manipulative behavior got rewarded.

And what was up w/ Debbie saying Teddy threw Mel under the bus last week....wasn't that Brett's doing???

At 6/22/2009 8:14 AM , Blogger Christa said...

I totally agree, I wanted both of them to be gone...in fact, I got a little excited when that seemed to be the case. If Jeffrey or Jamika doesn't win this thing, I can't imagine who will...

Lord was in joking mood as He did not strike both `em sums of beaches for their stupidity.

The one for his infinity ignorance of food and cooking skills ,and the other for his lack of integrity and the back bone to own his disaster and try to steal the credit of a collaboration (him and margaret choo made the meat loaf).

Total duschebagery ....

At 6/22/2009 8:52 AM , Anonymous Jane said...

Man oh man. I have never seen such unprofessionalism in my life! I have met some pretty big scumbags, but Eddie and Teddy really take the cake. Both of them should have been shown the door.

As for Debbie's protests about lack of integrity, what goes around comes around honey! Too bad, so sad. I have not a whit of sympathy for her. She still falls on the scumbag side of the aisle.

Melissa is beginning to get annoying. Her tearful whining makes her an unlikely winner.

Katie just doesn't get it. Scary to think she might win by default.

Michael just might be a little too out there, but I thought he and Jeffrey made a good team, so who knows? At least both of them can cook!

I still say Jeffrey and Jamika should make it to the finals. But the way this season is progressing, the final outcome is anyone's guess!

At 6/22/2009 10:17 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

You know the Judges *want* to axe Melissa, but have to keep whittling down the worst of the worst before they get to her. Do you suppose when Suzie said both could go they paused, consulted their schedules, but couldn't figure out something else to air if they shorted this season?

I'm hoping Debbie gives Michael a good b!tch slap when she takes one to the chops next week. It will rank up there with Liza Garza falling on her keester in the kitchen!

I can't wait to see Michael smash Debbie's face with a (potentially) hot baking pan. I could watch that clip all day, too funny!

Glad Eddie is gone, still waiting for Teddy to go! You know, I've read quite a few comments (on this blog & Bob Tuschmann's on FN) about Debbie suddenly tryin to be "integrity girl." I agree, she's no angel herself! She really tried coming off as hardworking & ethical last night, but let's not forget the angel food cake & shopping budget incidents from the first episode. I don't think she wins any medals for ethics either.

Teddy is an ass-hat!

At 6/22/2009 11:05 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Teddy is the new Food Network superhero: Deuchebag Man! His mutant superpower is to change reality by lying. "No. The meatloaf was all mine. The dessert was both of ours. Oh yes, the dessert was BOTH of ours. See, Tushinator, you cannot resist the power of my deuchebagability."

At 6/22/2009 11:07 AM , Blogger Keith said...

Don't forget that it was Debbie who bought the insipid prepared vanilla pudding that went into their awful desert and the only reason Teddy made it is because he spent all his time preparing the meatloaf.

I think that was Teddy wanted to express but ended up botching the explanation. I feel a bit for Teddy here because he has a point.

At 6/22/2009 11:22 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I'm sorry to see Eddie go. I will miss hearing his personal stories. Like the time he had a threesome, the time he picked up an underage hitch-hiker, or the time he and his roommate smoked some weed and decided to "experiment".

At 6/22/2009 11:52 AM , Anonymous tigergrrl said...

I AGREE Keith!

I don't think he was trying to take credit for the meatloaf. I think he meant that he spent his whole time on the meatloaf & didn't have time for the dessert.

And why does Debbie keep buying & trying to pawn off store-bought dessert??

This thing is Jeffrey's to lose at this point.

At 6/22/2009 12:43 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I knew the blogging would be intense! I also got excited at the prospect of both of them going. I could not BELIEVE Teddy's explanation about the meatloaf -- I don't agree that he was trying to explain himself. And Eddie admitting to using a Paula Deen recipe?? I have read the instructions on submitting an application and it is very clear -- they have to be your own ORIGINAL recipes. I think Bobby has become the best judge -- he is clear, precise, and holds them all to task.

Jeffrey, Michael, and Jamika may be the best, but no one really has star quality like last season (yes, I am a Lisa Garza fan and I am proud to say it! lol). I did like and could relate to Melissa's story about having to be creative when she couldn't go grocery shopping. Let's see what happens next.

Christine :)

So Teddy got to stay. Funny how if you are involved with Debbie things go bad. Bob and I must have watched different stuff. Debbie made her thing and Teddy really did do all the work for the meatloaf, I think if it were me I would have said I put all the effort into the collabaration that I failed on my own thing.

Jeffrey did great again, so what if he gave the same story twice. I just watched the Best Food show that was on Sunday as well, and like they didn't actually use stuff from before. Alex's canolies were from another show.

As Alton Brown so eloquently said a few seasons ago, with his head in his hands, "O.k. folks, can't we just send them all home and start over again?" I watched something else and switched over from time to time to see what disasters awaited the contestants. Ina's friend Frank looked plainly puzzled by some of the dishes. Duh!! We were puzzled too.

With Eddie Munster gone, the only contestant left with the potential to be The Next Guy Fierie is Michael.

He should do that Barbara Striesand/Michael Meyers Coffee Talk accent more often. It isn't getting old at all.

The Julio Iglesias guy will probably win...but he's more likely to be The Next Amy Finley or The Next Aaron McCargo than the Next Food Network Star.

Ediot the Next Watermelon Salad Star, as now he shall forever be known after that post, really did deserve to get out of there. It seems like he relies on his good looks (although the eyebrows are a bit frightening) to win people over. Teddy is a big weenie and needs to get out of there ASAP. Wish Susie could have sent them both home. Debbie is brewing some annoying characteristics, and I am honestly getting tired of these Mommy cooks every season.

So, this pretty much leaves my personal fave, Michael, who seems to have the most cooking flair but seems like he might be hard to market...and honestly from his website...doesn't seem to have won. Jeffery is great, but I am not sure I would watch his show, and Jamika, who is marketable, good for the network diversity element, and seems to make decent food.

Seems like: Jeffery will win (unless he caves) and his show might get cancelled. Michael should get his own show, a la Adam G. and hit it out of the ballpark for ratings.

I knew Teddy wasn't going anywhere. A show like this needs some drama and tension and he provides it. I bet he sticks a little longer.
I'm tired of the healthy food chick. Telling me that a dish will give me a hearty, satisfying BM is not really a selling point. If she wins her show could be called "How to make poo" or "Viva la dookie".
Jeffery is the leader of a not really great pack so far.

I was glad they showed the judges debating who was worse, Eddie or Teddy, because last week they completely skipped over any reaction to Melissa getting thrown under the bus. They both repeatedly revealed themselves to be rude, egotistical and most of the time just plain dumb, and as others have mentioned it would have been great to see them both sent packing. Seeing Teddy attempt to lie and then have to retract it two seconds later was mind boggling. And that move was enough to keep him on another week, which starts to paint the picture of these two bottom dwellers. I hope that Teddy's cumulative body of work edges him out the door next week.

I was CONFIDENT that both Eddie AND Teddy would be going home and OH HOW I WISH THE JUDGES HAD DONE JUST THAT!!!! So, now Teddy needs to go next and then Katie. Bless her heart, she just isn't a good cook. NOTHING she has made has looked like it had any flavor!!!

Yep, I'm with y'all- Jeffrey all the way! He is the ONLY one whose show I would watch.

His,

The very best thing was saying that the pathetic dish was Paula's recipe! I about peed my pants with that one.

LOL Jacob @ Ina's caption! Very good!

So even by losing, it's so cool to say you cooked in Ina's barn! And were there. With Ina! AAAAHHHHH! (jumps out of the window with the excitement)

Did anyone notice how Tyler was quick with the snappy comments from the grocery store commercial segments? He was keeping it real. That bug eyed Katie looked at him like, "WTF Tyler"??? LOL!

And Teddy deserves no sympathy. How friggin' long does it take to put a meatloaf together? He just played in the meat mixture while trying to concoct a dessert in that peabrain head of his. Plus, he clearly said in the film when they gave their lil' schtick that the dessert was all him. So you can't then go and say the dessert was a calabo when it clearly sucked. Send him home.

Oh, and where was JEFFREY?!

Interesting how much we all agree! I was also so excited when Susie said to sent them both back home to their mommies. They both act like children. "This dish was excellent!" "Oh, that was all mine!" "This dish was crap!" "Well, that was one of your own FN Stars' dishes, nya nya nya nya nya." Un freaking believable. And so unbelievably transparent! Uh, hello, you're on camera the whole time Eddie. At least Teddy is at least faking remorse. Eddie struck me as a complete arrogant ass from the minute I saw him. I don't mind arrogance when people are really accomplished (Mario Batali, for example), but from some hack like this guy I just want to smack the crap out of him.

Go Team Debbie! Why is everyone so down on her? So she overspent on a food budget by accident -- big deal. She has charisma, an interesting take on cooking ("Seoul to Soul" or the other way around) and the FN is seriously lacking in Asian cuisine! I love her!! :)

Eddie's comment of "I really want to kick the shit out of all of you right now" really sealed my opinion of him. He was a crude, vulgar asshole through the entire competition and I'm glad to see that he's gone.

Eddie is a douchebag to the umpteenth degree. I was more than happy to see him go!

I'm not really pulling for any of them at this point. I think Jeffrey and Jamika will make it to the finals, but I wouldn't watch either show. Jamika doesn't grab me, and I'd be too distracted by the ad space on Jeffrey's head to pay attention to his food.

totally glad that eddie is gone... wish even more that both he and teddy were gone. what a total jerk thing to do. both of them. i mean - no one will respect them after this week - so might as well get them out of there. i'm not really impressed with any of the candidates though... last season was much better.

I would be beyond embarrassed to let another food network star know i EAT store bought vanilla instant pudding and angel food cake.... but then to make it for them??? How is this cooking? The last thing we need is some of the crap aunt Sandy puts out there again!

DEBBIE, questioning someone's integrity? Please!

How can she forget that in the first episode, she did the very SAME THING as Teddy did? The only difference is that no one called her out on LYING!

I can't wait till that big witch goes home.

Here's the thing about this salad...It's a sweet onion salad. Of course Paula used Vidalia onions, which you can't get in the fall, when this is filmed. I'm sure he used some sort of sweet onion, but nothing is sweeter than a Vidalia.
He's a brat, along with Teddy. By saying it's a Paula Deen recipe, he threw her under the proverbial bus-instead of taking the heat for his own incompetance. I would have let Teddy go this time, but I'm sure they know what they were doing.

I Think Jamika, Michael and Debbie are the best ones on the show. I felt bad because Michael had a rough time this week. I like Melissa, but I think some people will think she is annoying. Also, people seem to like Jeffery, But there is just something about him I don't like.

As for Teddy, I really like Teddy, except when he puts on his "On-Camera Personality". I do not like Judging Room Teddy, I think he just panics and plays the Blame Game. If he was to calm down in front of the camera and stop pointing fingers he would be a contender in this competition, but I think he effectively ruined his chances with the stunt he pulled this week.

Did anyone else notice when Tyler told Jamika not to reduce a marinade and use it on the food after you've had raw food in it? I've seen COUNTLESS chefs do this, including Tyler Florence. I love Tyler Florence but that ticked me off. On that All Star Grill Fest South Beach Show that came on recently, Tyler and Alton Brown reduced a marinade and poured it on the food after they had raw fish in it. What the heck?! It ticked me off because it seemed like someone needed to take their own advice...what do you all think?
