Next Food Network Star - Episode 4

I'm pre-posting this, since I'm in Chicago this weekend. I may or may not have seen the episode yet... but what did you think!?! Did Debbie get whacked in the face on purpose?

Be back soon.

Unfortunately no, Michael didn't hit Debbie on purpose. She was coming up behind him when he was turning around with a pan that he just took out of the oven, and hit her in her right cheek. There wasn't even a mark or anything that showed up on the camera. Too bad too...I was kinda hoping Debbie would lose an eye.

It was an accident but she milked it for all it was worth

Yeah it was an accident but I think she was INDEED making an excuse for her flavorless dish due to her injury.

I agree with Brian and Sol...she definitely milked it. Her food was really bland this week and she needed a lifesaver. But GOODBYE TEDDY! We won't miss you.

With as much blubber as Shamu has on her, it would take more than a whack with a pan to leave a mark.

Debbie tells the exact same story as she has every week and serves bland food as the judges can wait to tell her how great she is.

Oh yeah and she was milking the thing for all it was worth. I sure it must have hurt but give that woman an Oscar.

Total accident and she milked it for more than it was worth!

I admit I had to rewind it and re-watch it a few times for the giggles. And I am not normally like that.

Wow, y'all. I didn't think Debbie milked it. I actually thought she was NICE about it!! I know I would have been mean to whoever hit me- accident or not. I'd have felt like it was on purpose. I think Debbie handled it well.

And I must say, I was quite impressed with Melissa this week!! Since she's my kind (SAHM and "home cook"), I haven't been cheering for her... until now. :)

She totally milked it and then used it as an excuse for her crappy food, all the while saying she wasn't using it as an excuse (which is really irritating). I totally agree -- her "personal" story is the same every time. Southern, Korean, etc. We get it already. They went hard after Jeffrey for using the same story twice in ONE DAY but continually let her get away with this.

Here's the other thing about this show: do not judge contestants on the perfection of their food if you give them mismatched flavors, no time and equipment that doesn't work. Susan got on her high horse about Katie undercooking meat. Well guess what? If she had ten extra minutes -- as she would in real life or working on TV -- she would have cooked her damn turkey burger. Jamikia obviously didn't want to make glue-like potatoes, but she was on a ridiculous time limit and had to think of something quick.

The producers can never answer the question of how these challenges in any way reveal how the person will perform in the totally controlled environment of a studio kitchen.

Also, enough already about "personalizing" food. Susie is so hung up on this. I could give less than a f--- if Ina or Alton or Bobby have some personal connection to a recipe. I don't care if Anne Burrell personalizes her food -- I just want to know how to make it. They use this as a huge determining factor when it's almost meaningless.

Anon 2:25, the only answer I've gotten about the ridiculous cooking situations is to see how the finalists deal with pressure. I'm no expert, but I've seen a few of these folks in action, surrounded by demanding crowds at culinary demo's or out in the field - and they sure do need to keep their cool in an uncontrolled environment. totally with ya though, doesn't speak to whether or not they'd perform well in a studio. :-D

And I'm 100% with you on the personal stories. I soooo do not get that. What I do get, tho, is that the winner will need to be able to connect with others in a work environment and in a public setting (culinary demo, giving a talk, meeting fans in mundane settings, etc.) So a friendly and congenial demeanor is a requirement.

Y'all are right about Debbie. Why is it we haven't seen any of the SOUL food that's part of her Soul to Seoul rap? One trick pony, perhaps? And her story about her food? What?

Melissa truly rocked the Intrepid meal, and it was nice to see Michael score with his burger, but I could have done without the whole "I wanna make out with Bobby Flay" visual(thanks, Michael). How is it Jamika didn't think beer-cheese soup with kilbasa croutons? That would have been easy and 1000 time better than the wallpaper paste she tried to gussy up.

At 6/29/2009 10:21 AM , Blogger Allison said...

I agree about Jamika's beer-cheese combo.
But what the hell was Jeffrey supposed to do with blueberries, lobster and sea salt? If he kept the blueberries out of the dish, they would have accused him a making 2 dishes. In what universe do berries and lobster blend?

That said, he did screw up the pot pie. Also, I think he's been fine with his presentations. The judges are nitpicking about his Zen quality. Debbie is overrated for her happy talk and Katie is skating through with uncooked food and awful presentations. She's the next to go.

Tuschelfog: What have you done with our beloved Food Network ?

If this series is the best you can do to give us compelling TV, then I suggest you go back for a quick refresher in radio/tv broacasting.

Wait did either if you ever study this in school ? Yeah I thought so. Like your "chefs" who never went to culinary school, you guys never took TV courses at your local community colleges. Hacks.

Did anyone notice Debbie without the makeup. That is one scary site. Mooo!

At 6/29/2009 12:43 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I have renewed respect for Melissa now because finally SHE believes she deserves to be there.

I think she started out a bit intimidated because she cooks for "family". Guess what? So do most of the people watching Food Network.

I still like Jeffrey but Melissa has now moved up the list for me.

I also think it's unfair not to provide adequate cooking equipment, uh-like a working stove.

At 6/29/2009 3:20 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I agree -- it is not fair to expect any cook to make a great meal on equipment that doesn't work.

And what happened to Debbie was a TOTAL accident. Michael really felt bad and stuff like that happens in kitchens.

I like Jeffrey and Jamika and Melissa and Michael, but are they "watchable " enough for a show? Maybe. I still miss Adam and Lisa from last season :(

Oh, and the elimination was much more abrupt this time -- did anyone else notice? I'm not complaining!

Christine ;)

why did they leave Katie and get rid of Teddy.........geez she has no talent other than whining and sulking...she does not deserve to be there...no skills no personality...

For all the folks making fun of Debbie's weight, may I just point out:
1) Best host on Food Network? Ina Garten, who is not exactly Twiggy.
2) Who trusts a skinny chef?
3) Oh, and you are asses. Seriously. Criticize her star quality, personality, or cooking. The weight comments just show you are asses.

I wish I could figure out what those judges look for. I almost always disagree with their choices, and let's face it, their track record with making success with folks from this show has not been stellar. I find Jeffrey fairly dull. He seems like he's probably quite a good cook, but there's nothing about his food that sets him apart from anyone else on the FN. Debbie and Michael are my favorites so far this season, though everyone is right that she needs to expand her schtick.

Some people have had a hard-on for Debbie even before the show even started.

It's too bad that Debbie got hit in the face with a hot pan. I'd rather see this happen to her... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tN2gpRcFKAQ&feature=PlayList&p=4B9C925EA8AD5947&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=4

Cruel, but true.

Oh good the politically correct post police have arrive.

At 6/29/2009 10:42 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

From the looks of her giant head, Michael apparently whacked Debbie about the face, neck, and hips with a pan as well.

Maybe he didn't hit her at all. Maybe she's just really allergic to peanuts or something.

I think it's more, Don't talk bad about Debbie or I'll call you a name. But if the same things are said about any other contestant I won't say a thing police.

Surprise! NFNS is frigging childish and immature! Not to mention "fake" and "a waste of time". Why should our comments reflect anything different?

Christopher M - well said! Criticize Debbie for the skills she's being judged for on the show, not her weight. Seriously, what some of you all are writing on here makes me cringe. Hateful.

Hopefully she will be gone next. What a baby, and wow tried to use gitting smacked in the face for an excuse for bad food. I am so very sick of her I could puke.

At 6/30/2009 9:33 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Watch her getting smacked over and over. It's gets funny. it should be on U Tube ot whatever it's called.

At 6/30/2009 11:54 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Geez folks, the food network site talks about how they had to cover up the bruise with makeup. And if you look at her at the judges table - you can SEE it's puffier than her other side.

You don't like her food or presentation, talk about that. But don't say she wasn't hurt because clearly, she was.

Oh and there's Susie saying 'But wouldn't it have been great if she came out and was even better?!" What's next, slapping the contestants to see who handles pain better? Yeesh.

FN can't be trusted with the truth. They always have their own spin. You only have to look at the special treatment Debbie gets. Or their never ending string of contradictions one after another.

Long time reader de-lurking here.

I completely agree about Debbie.
My husband had an interesting point though , they keep hammering Jeffrey about his sweet/savory food and yet Debbie does the same " Asian " style food every week ?

Come on....!

The funny part of the show...Jamika has Wisconsin and yet...look closely at the beer...the beer is Shiner..brewed right here in Texas. LOL.

At 7/01/2009 10:33 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I love these comments. Spot on you anonymous folks. Who on the FN would go on their set without working equipment? Witout a burner that will boil water? And how is that their fault?

The only thing I can say about blueberries and lobster is that no self-respecting Mainer I know would ever serve them together as one dish. If I were the contestant, that's what I would have said to the judges and the folks on the ship. Of course I had a lot of time on the sofa to think about that. But really. Compare that to beer, sausage, and cheese. No fair.

And absolutely correct about how Korean woman is so wonderful and Cali guy is the same one week to the next and needs to show more. Ugh.

Okay, I knew someone would mention the hideous flag-thing that Susie was wearing.

I also knew someone would call someone else names and then someone else would call party A a jerk and party A would get all up in party B's face and all that. Oh no you din't!

I love you guys.

I am a long-time watcher of FN, and TNFNS, and Debbie is revolting,by the way Deb, you are not a "Southern Girl", you are CO-REE-AN, also Bob TUSCHMAN is horrible, I am sure they choose the winners based on race quotas. Aaron McCargo is a waste, as are the McNeeley's (two one-trick ponies---BBQ, that's them, altho the husb is OK)FN has too many shows these days. I am sick of Paula Deen too, blah blah blah, never makes true southern dishes anymore

At 7/02/2009 4:59 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

By the way there are some FN shows I love: Bobby Flay's grilling shows, (Throwdown is a "throwaway"), Barefoot Contessa, Tyler Florence (he's so hot he doesn't HAVE to turn on any burners!!), and I forgot to add that I find Rachel Ray's little "babytalk" nauseating. So overrated & overexposed!!! So there!

At 7/03/2009 9:42 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

I am encouraged by these comments about the one trick pony. She has no talent, no integrity, however Susie Fogelson and Bobie Tuschman have decided she will stay. Our comments are not read by them or if they are they could care less. I feel bad for Chef Flay he has no say. If one of the other judges signs your paycheck or can decide if you stay on the air do you really believe your opinion matters. Debbie needs to go, resign as soon as possible (ASAP) for the fans of FN and the other contestants who deserve to be there.

Once again, the racial baiting has been taken----Tuschman is clear he wants either another AA or the CO-REE-AN to stay...tho I could never watch that fat face on my fine HDTV (DEBBIE) and will not watch her. She turned me off the very first show when she lied about not getting the stuff the other team members needed, also the constant reference to being "CO-REE-AN" but really she's a "Southern Gal, Y'All" like H**L she is....where oh where do they come up with some of these losers??? Eddie, was another wacked out space monkey Hey Food Network, you are terrible and overexposed these days...no direction from rubber lipped Tuschman, that's for sure, or Susie with her hair flipping empty-headed comments...you need someone who can cook and has some knowledge...YOU CAN TEACH THEM HOW to be on camera...DUUHHHH. And someone please tell Rachel Ray to shut up with the 'cutesy' words....Sammy...Yum-OH, I could Puke-OH!!!!!
