Next Food Network Star - Episode 5

As I tweeted earlier, I was very surprised to see Rachael Ray show up at Food Network kitchens tonight and help judge the mini-challenge, instead of just letting the remaining finalists do a demo on her daytime talkshow. Yay Rachael! (And in another positive note, I think her voice is sounding much better.)

I think we can all agree that the person who should have been sent home was sent home tonight. Thank you, Tuschelson!

Oh, and Bobby... your opinion counts, too.

Agreed...I've been so sick of Ms. BugEye and I'm glad to see her go. It's annoying to hear her really choppy, uptalking voice heckle me on how I should eat antioxidants and healthy stuff--sorry, I'm a fatass and I LIKE IT THIS WAY :)

I also am SO sick of her bursting into tears over everything...BYE BYE BUGEYES!

Are you kidding me???....Katie did absolutly fantastic this week and the show is completly BOGUS.. for those of us who did watch the Rachel Ray show Katie blew everyone out of the water. The editing is truly horrific and didn't have Katie in the right light. Have fun watching Ms Korean..I certainly won't be

Out of all the reality shows on television, this one has to be one of the most biased and unfair. I was completely shocked that Katie was eliminated. Katie performed so well this week; I thought she was one the best, if the not THE best. Sorry if she didn't look up at the camera for like 30 seconds and if her chicken wasn't salty enough...she cooks HEALTHY food and doesn't need to put exorbitant amounts of salt in her food like some other FN cooks (*cough* RR and Giada *cough*). The judges pulled those excuses out of their asses just to save Jamika for another week...and for what reason? Her food sucked the past two weeks. Her presentation and personality have been dying the past two weeks. Based on her performance, she totally should have been sent home. But the judges "see something in her," so of course she stays. I feel like Katie has grown so much over the course of this show. She learned how to tone down her craziness and use it to her advantage (ex. the intrepid challenge last week and the kids challenge this week), and was SO approachable on the RR show. She always brought herself into the food and it always looked good to me. I would definitely watch any show hosted by Katie because her approach to Food Network cooking is different and she seems like a fun person cook with and just be around.

It is very obvious that this show is not a contest, it is a pilot for whomever TPTB decide on giving a show to. Last year the winner was horrible, his show is horrible and everywhere he has shown up as a guest he has been horrible. They are not using the program to pick "The Next Food Network Star", they are using the program to showcase their choice. Which is all fine, just misleading.

Chef Flay's opinion counts, not likely. Tuschman & Fogelson are management and can influence if Chef Flay stays or leaves FN. It counts if it agreees with management. Let the sham continue, management will do as it always does, whatever suits them.

Can't wait to learn how to cook kimchi on Debbie's show! Oh, but wait. Isn't that a traditional Korean dish? Is she Korean or Canadian? Can't tell. Confused. Yuck.

Joe is right. It is not a contest, and the 'competitive' parts rarely test any skills that would actually be needed as a "Food Network Star."

I only watch it for the most ridiculous judge reaction shots on television. Susie's concentrated nods, Bob's disappointed head shakes, group fake laughter at that scamp Michael...great stuff.

Phony show on an increasingly phony network.

I question this show's integrity.

I don't think it fair that Susie announced to everyone that she is a fan of Debbie's. I DO like Debbie, but what in the world did that comment say to everyone else?? "Hey, stop trying! Don't even bother!! I like Debbie and she's gonna win!!!!" Uh uh. Not smooth, Susie!!!!

And I think Katie SHOULD have gone home. Twice she undercooked meat and this time she overcooked it. Bless her heart!!! But it's for the best.

The FN already has enough high fat, high butter fried food cooks - If Debbie wins... I will NOT watch her show. I would have rather seen an organic cook hit the airwaves.

I would love to see Melissa win. She would be the anti-Paula Deen.

I don't feel any prejudice towards overweight people, but it does irritate me to see someone as overweight as Debbie boast about how her food is basically as far from healthy as possible and bring on the bacon and butter! Have some more respect for yourself and take a little interest in your well-being for crying out loud! That isn't someone whose show I would want to watch.

I'm really liking Bobby this season. He doesn't have an agenda like dumb and dumber do. He just straight up tells it like it is. I bet he's even a bit annoyed by the obvious favoritism going on here. If they aren't going to take his opinions into account which they don't seem to be he should move on. (and yes I did say most of this in another blog..nothing wrong with that)

At 7/06/2009 8:17 AM , Anonymous Joe said...

Hi Courtney,
Almost everyone on the food network has some degree of a weight problem. Most of them have packed on the pounds in the last few years. Even someone kind of thin like Bobby Flay is flabby and out of shape. Alton Brown is so out of shape he gets winded while giving cooking instructions. Poor Guy gets so red faced when trying to explain stuff, or when he is stuffing his mouth on DDD I am waiting for him to explode on some show.

They had some healthy type shows on from low carb, to low fat to low cal, but they don't seem to last. When the bulk of the U.S. is overweight and for the first time since they have been keeping such records there are more obese people than simply overweight people --- what do you think they are going to want to watch?

Thank God this boring, annoying chick got booted. She has zippo in the personality department, yes, she seems sweet, but who wants to watch sweet cook dry or under cooked food. I mean FN already has Ellie Kreiger (another boring soul)doing the same thing (is she even still filming new eps ?)so why do we need Katie to be the NFNS. She just doesn't have the ablity to jump off the TV and make me want to watch her or cook her food...

At 7/06/2009 9:31 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

There is need to slander Debbie or any other contestant. If you don't like Bob, Debbie or NFNS... don't watch.

At 7/06/2009 9:34 AM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Katie was the best of the bunch on the RR show, but it doesn't look like her food was very good so I guess it's not the biggest thing in the world that she got booted a week early.

I thought it was highly cruel of Bob to say Katie "just wasn't destined for stardom." Ouch, Bob. Why kick her in the ass on her way out the door? That's going to stick to her forever.

I don't really get what they see in Jamika. She started out strong, but has since been boring and a poor cook.

I no longer think Jeffry is the best cook. I think Michael is, but I just can't see him having his own show.

Melissa's personality makes me feel ill. I just want to grab her and force a Vicoden down her throat to calm her the fuck down.

And Debbie is just repetitive and irritating. She has no appeal whatsoever and her food has not stood out a bit.

Bob and Susie seriously need to get off this show. They kill it with their drama and overreactions. And there's still a question of just how much they know about food. They nitpick rather than looking at the overall picture, and they seem to judge based on the demographic they need to fill and not who has the best skills for the job.

I'm not a fan of Katie's but she shouldn't have been the one going home based on these 2 challenges. Jamika who was my fav bombed in both of them.

I think both of Joe's comments were right on the money. This is not a competition but rather a pilot for the chosen next food network star. On a show they get to have prep work done, retakes, blocking etc... These silly contests have little to do with skill or abilities.

Did anyone ever see some of the earlier shows of Bobby Flay? He sucked. But he eventually became one of their break out stars.

As far as "almost" everyone having a weight problem... don't forget Tyler.. He smuggling a little inner tube around his mid section.

Bob and Suzie have already decided on picking minority hosts out of these shows. They are trying to expand their viewership. Nothing wrong with any of that, but as was stated earlier it is misleading. As Joe said it is not a contest, it is a showcase.

If someone from FN would kidnap Michael and teach him a little TV101 he'd be a contender, but to say he sees the cameras as the Depths of Hell and judgy-judgy means he isn't long for this competition, either. You can teach cooking, but if you can't win over the cameras, see ya.

There certainly has been a lot of tag team cooking this season. Is FN hoping to cast a cooking couple? As long as one doesn't refer to the other as "Mamma," OK then.

Meh, totally predictable. Top 3: Jeffrey, Melissa, Debbie. If no. 4: Jamika. Michael is just to much of a mess.

Notice how no one has hardly even mentioned their culinary point of view? Bizarre.

Jacob, can you answer a question for me? You have been kinda harsh on Aunt Sandy here, as we all have, because it's fun. But um, how is it that she has posed for pics with you, done interviews with you, and has not tried to kill you? If I were Aunt Sandy, I'd kind of want you out of the picture or hit you with a big roll of frozen biscuits or something.

Maybe the big scandal this year will be that Debbie is not really Korean..she's Laotian or something and thought Korean would be trendier. They can bring in the crying Laotian grandma, Debbie makes an apology and withdraws...The crime: Lying about her ethnicity. One one show, someone can say, "Maam, your kimchee is a fraud..."

At 7/06/2009 12:19 PM , Blogger Greg said...

Well undercooked food is not the big problem with Katie. If they would plan out the menu for her, she could certainly get her food cooked. Her problem was she just didn't get nutritious has to TASTE good. And I love Ellie Krieger. I'd rather have a new season of her shows instead of Katie..

At 7/06/2009 12:21 PM , Blogger Greg said...

I think Jeffrey is the most viable choice.
- Debbie always wants her Asian twist, but doesn't consistently create good food
- Melissa seems like a good home cook but doesn't seem terribly innovative and has a cold, grating personality
- Jamika doesn't do well with the camera
- Michael is a mess.

At 7/06/2009 12:32 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

"Big Daddy" (winner last season) didn't have much camera presence, either. They worked with him to (somewhat) improve his camera skills. I wish they would do the same with Michael, to give him a chance at winning. He's funny as all get-out when he's in front of a live audience and doesn't notice all the cameras.

After last years debacle involving Chef Luncheon Meat McCargo, you'd think people might get a wiff of something fishy going on.

Instead of dumping on people for having bug eyes or rotund bodies and trying to imitate being a chef, you should send some of that scorn Bobbette and Susi's way. They're the ones that are making a mockery of this.

Please don't be surprised that reality television isn't real. It never has been, and it never will be. The question is ... is NFNS entertaining television viewing?

Based on the number of discussions here and on other FN-related blogs, yes it is.

Smart FN. Very smart.

I am surprised that Shamu Debbie doesn't eat all of the food on the set before the cameras start rolling.

At 7/06/2009 1:00 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Aaron's presentation skills still suck. He seems like a nice guy, but even my untrained eye can detect the heavy editing and inordinate number of voiceovers on "Big Daddy's" show.
Jeffery and Jamika are fading...Jamika especially. The judges have a hard-on for Debbie, though she's a one-trick-pony with food that's been midling, and Melissa, who looked like she did a bump of coke before her demo on Rachel Ray's show. They seem enamored with their "points of view". Michael is funny and I haven't heard a single negative critique of his food. I agree with above, Jeffery, Melissa and Debbie will probably be the top three.
BTW, I knew Katie didn't have a chance on the first episode when she touted to Alton that her dish would enduce a hearty, cleansing dump. Her food sucked, though I'll concede she was getting better on-camera.

The Korean is still on. One boy and one sorta boy, one black, and one girl.

I keep voting Debbie off, full well knowing that it is a done deal. It seems natural that Katie is gone, we don't see much of Ellie lately on FN and she really has that POV covered and does a great job of it. Even I like her healty food.

Jeffery may have hogged the show with Jamika, but he has no real TV experience so how was he supposed to get Jamika back in the game? Their partnership was a failure overall.

Michael just is not going to work out. Where is that take him under your wing stuff from last year that saved Aaron?

I will give Melissa credit for doing a good job this well.

Honestly would love to see it come down to Jeffery and Melissa. They may not be the greatest culinary experts, but I think we would at least enjoy 6 episodes from either one.

Oh yeah, Bobby Flay is not my favorite Iron Chef, but his "Banana Challenge" last night was great.

I think the judges may favor Debbie because she seems comfortable in front of the camera during her presentations.

I personally don't like her because I think she lied twice in the very first show so I actually "question her integrity" even though she had the nerve to question one of the other contestant's integrity.

Debbie lied about coming under budget during that first shopping trip and she didn't plan her shopping well enough to get all the ingredients that her team members needed.

She also lied when she told the judges that the Angel food cake dessert was a group collaboration. I think that was dishonest because she is the one who made the call to use store-bought angel food cake and dribble some fruit (or something) on it. The team members had no choice in the matter since she made that call while still in the store. She never owned up to that.

She may have an apparent superior comfort level in front of the camera compared to her fellow contestants but since her integrity flew out the window during that first show, I have never been able to root for her.

I'm beginning to like Melissa but I do wish she would calm down. Melissa if you're reading this, ignore the camera and talk like you're talking to your family instead of an audience.

I still like Jeffrey but thought he was a bit hyper-active this last time. That's not fatal but he needs to chill a bit and that may have been nerves.

Speaking of nerves, Jamika is cute but the blinking eyes are a total giveaway about the stability of her nerves.

Michael is OK, I like him but I don't like the red hair streak and while his flamboyance is part of his personality, he walks a fine line between personality and stereotype.

IMHO

I think Mr. Anon. Shamu has a damp foo-foo for Debbie and she shut him down and that is why he is trying to crucify her here, with his mating calls of Shamu.

And Greg, since Jake is a sock puppet for the FN, Aunt Sandy takes his ribbing all in good fun and chalks it up to publicity. No need to hide when she comes a knocking.

I think Katie was the right choice to send home. She is just not appealing on camera, her facial expressions are so distracting, and week after week her food was terrible, it seems like a no brainer, i'm surprised she stayed so long.

At 7/06/2009 5:20 PM , Anonymous Anonymous said...

Note to anti-Debbie/Shamu criticizers. Calling her morbidly obese is NOT slander (it's fact). This also covers accusations of being hypocritical and a liar (camera proof for angelfood lie & lack of bruising lie). Saying she looks like Shamu is not slander (it's opinion).

Also, written defamation is LIBEL.

Saying this season sucks big fat donkey balls, however, is "general consensus".

Susie was wrong when she said it's easier to teach someone to cook than to be good on TV. I'm a scientist who never had any media experience and took a job with an advocacy organization. In my first few TV debates I truly sucked. Then I had a 4-hour intensive media training session and was much better. After my third session, I was pretty damned good on TV -- and I learned how to handle the camera and press, which has come in handy now that I'm in business for myself.

So enough with the so-called personalities. Pick someone who can cook. Believe me, they can develop a "personality" if they need to.
