Next Food Network Star - Week 3

Well, I may have missed posting about last week's episode (I was still on the West coast, getting ready to get on a redeye flight back) but I'm baaaaack.

This week, Guy Fee-Yetti was pitch-hitting for Bobby Flay while he was back in New York. And luckily for us, Guy didn't just intro one of the challenges like he's done in past seasons but actually served as a guest judge with Tuschelson (I think Bobby T. and Suze would have been fine on their own, but oh well.)

So, to sum it up, the contestants first had to learn what it's like to work a red carpet... and what better way to do that than take them to an L.A. hotspot, hire fake paparazzi and fans to snap photos and yell their (cued or written on the paid actors' hands I'm sure) names, and have them do short interviews with a local L.A. television reporter who no one outside of Cali probably knows.

Then, they had to cater a Grammy party for musician Colbie Caillat... because so many Food Network stars do massive catering on their Food Network shows. Hmm....

Anyhow... Dzintra unleashed the crazy --although it's still take compared to Lisa Garza:-( --and Serena's foot got stepped on. Just a regular day in la la land.

And someone went home. What did you think?

Show gets worse every season.

Can hardly wait to see who they tout as this years "culinary elite".

Guess Goldman will be part of that ? No wait. Melissa D'Arabian has whole year under her belt. She'll plunk her ass down at the table .

Total fail Jake.

I was glad to see Ditzintra go. She grated my nerves. Here's to hoping that Paul is next.

I find this year's edition of TNFNS incredibly boring. I watched the first two episodes completely, though I had trouble caring enough to do so. Tonight I just tuned into the last few minutes. The right people are going home, but I just can't bring myself to care who wins. Bob and Susie are more sleep-inducing than warm milk at this point and the addition of Giada and Guy do nothing to bring any true warmth or charm to this non-party. Bobby Flay seems to be the only one who kind of cares. Probably a minority opinion, but won't be tuning in anymore except (maybe) for the finale.

It's funny how the finicky, fickle FN keeps these contestants jumping through hoops, always keeping them guessing. Rmember how McCargo, a guy from the streets wasn't quite "urban" enough for FN, so they did a Henry Higgins on him to bring that out. Now they have Das who is very "street" and they want him to tone it down. It really doesn't matter what the judges say because they don't really care about consistency, just criticism.

It's an odd experience watching this show because you know that most of these people have NO shot whatsoever to get their own show. There is zero chance Paul, Brad, Herb, Brianna or Tom will win. Das could take it because they would love to have a young black host with such cross-over appeal. Serena is wacky and pretty enough. Aria can handle herself on cam. Aarti is the only one I could actually imagine watching, though, and I think she'll win without issue. But what to make of this group? Paul is completely and utterly obnoxious. Why would they cast him? He's rude and his food is terrible. Tom is utterly boring, has no visual appeal, and his food follows suit. And Dzintra... okay, Dzintra IS A FREAKING MANIAC. No, not just kinda wacky and weird, but certifiably insane. She talks to herself, she can't interact with people without being totally awkward, she refers to herself in the third person, and she shushes other adults. And WHY did she make it onto the show? Brianna -- who will probably regret crying and saying she has no friends -- seems like she thinks she's famous already and Brad literally has no personality. It's just amazing that of all the people who tried out for the show these were the best of the bunch. Luckily for the Food Network, they somehow -- probably by accident -- found someone worthy of the show (Aarti).

The summarization of this episode on the blog was sooo phoned in. Jacob if you dont want to do this anymore or dont have time to, just dont. I'll rather have nothing than this!

Yep, Dzintra is nutty and grating but Paul deserged the axe. Of course, I despise Aria and the judges tongue bathing of her only makes me hate her more. It just ... Dzintra couldn't have won with the pairing. Shushing Aria the golden child is awkward and childish, but let her prattle on and they would have questioned Dzintra's passion and assertiveness.

And Guy complaining how he just tasted the mushrooms in Dzintra's dish? Guy, you dolt, mushrooms were her ingredient not the beef. And if the beef had starred, the criticism would have been about her not making her ingredient the star.

Team Aarti.
