Dunkin Donuts Yanks Rachael Ray Ad
Lest you confuse Rachael Ray as a "terrorist sympathizer," Dunkin Donuts is pulling an ad in which the Food Network star, talkshow host, cookbook author, world-dominator, etc. dons a scarf that some have likened to a keffiyeh, a traditional headdress worn by Arab men.
The "large print silk scarf" is still on sale at Urban Outfitters in the UK as of this writing.
Rachael Ray's choice of scarf (or, rather, her stylist Gretchen Monahan's choice) caught some heat when conservative Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin, among others, bloggingly wondered if Rachael's "clueless sporting of a jihadi chic keffiyeh was "spurred more by ignorance than ideology," and even pondered if the blunder was worth boycotting DD over.
Dunkin Donuts has since released this statement:
"In a recent online ad, Rachael Ray is wearing a black-and-white silk scarf with a paisley design. It was selected by her stylist for the advertising shoot. Absolutely no symbolism was intended. However, given the possibility of misperception, we are no longer using the commercial."
The New York Times commented on this thin line between fashion and politics back in Feb. 2007. According to the Times, Urban pulled the scarves from their US stores. There's no mention of their availability in other countries.
So what do you think: an offensive fashion choice or an oversensitive reaction?
**********************************************
Definitely will not be commenting on this one, as my Star Trek comments were apparently offensive enough.
I will say that fashion and art have always been a reflection of our world today, so it's not surprising to me that designers would be inspired by the fashions of Middle Eastern countries.

wow, how completely ridiculous.
now, if they said they were pulling the ad because the scarf is heinous, that would make a lot more sense.
I paid $4.15 a gallon for gas today. Do you really think I care about what scarf Rachael Ray is wearing in a commercial?
Haven't we got more important things to discuss on FOX News?
I think we have created a monster. Rachel Ray will pitch anything these days.
We should declare intifada on Rachel Ray. And her husband.
I'm assuming no one would mind if she had a scarf with little swastikas on it, or maybe a "rebel flag" scarf.
Yeesh. Chip said it first and I'll reiterate: don't they have better battles to wage? Men and women are dying everyday in Iraq and Afghanistan, gas is sky-high, the housing market sucks, but Dunkin Donuts and Rachael Ray must be held accountable for their terrorist sympathies, dammit!
Malkin is a complete moron, instigator, right-wing nutcase, and sad sad little person.
Just when I think Malkin can't stun me anymore, BAM, she issues another classic paranoid edict. What's next? Stoning keffiyeh wearers?? Oy vey. For reference, See "McCarthyism" on Wiki, or better yet, Arthur Miller's "The Crucible." Ugh.
Michelle Malkin sux and DD should take her to court.
Rachael should have used the Karen Walker line to Michelle at Fox:
"Well I think stretch pants are awful, but I am too much of a lady to say it, fat ass."
I see people wearing them all over the place, especially during the late fall, winter and early spring. Hell, I even went to American University in DC, and it was almost required clothing on campus.
Wish they had yanked her scarf and
all off TV forever.
oink oink
oink oink
It's a freakin' SCARF!!! Geez! What are we going to wear in the winter if these groups keep banning items they find "offensive"?
Michelle Malkin hasn’t been a “Fox News Contributor” for a good long while now. It’s been a year at least, probably more. …And she was also something before she was the dreaded “Fox News contributor.”
Is your mind so limited you have to reduce people to a single factoid? If so that’s too bad, how unfortunate.
Since this is your blog and reflects on you, you might want to fact check. It might be better to actually know what the hell you’re talking about.
"Michelle Malkin hasn’t been a “Fox News Contributor” for a good long while now."
It says she is on her own website (http://michellemalkin.com/about/).
Zing! Take that Anon! Go back to protesting on the streets over Rachael's scarf!
Michelle Malkin is a meanspirited idiot with far too much time on her hands, and a misguided inclination to start shit over nothing.
So is Anon 12:16.
Ha! Of course it was Fox News pondering such absurdities. For a long time I couldn't stand Rachael Ray but now in small doses, I can tolerate her. I think the scarf is pretty. Linking it to such a thing makes my blood boil and is yet another reason to NOT watch Fox News. Why didn't DD tell Malkin to take a flying leap and stop by the Dr for a check-up and refill of necessary meds? How utterly absurd and stupid!
hilarious.
I can think of about 742,000 bigger issues... My coffee better not cost more because of this!
aww,Rach, you don't deserve this.I Don't believe people are actually worrying about this and even have the balls to point this out.....This just makes me hate Fox news and our country even more.
Ok! Let's see someone is complaining over a pretty scarf that someone wears when in the US today we have issues that are worse like this is our country and they are taking every right the true americans ever had away such as freedom of speach, the Ten Commandments, and In God We Trust and the Pledge of Allegience. So she wore a pretty scarf get over it and complain about every other human from another country coming in to ours and complaining because we don't do things their way. Well let them go back home if they do not like the way things are here and for pete's sake if your in America learn the language
